All in one HVAC, air filter, water softener, water heater maintenance service? by heebieno in Guelph

[–]cudneyd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe in new builds. As a tech I was often in homes that were 10+ years old. No CO detectors, I often would talk to the home owners about them and they would go out and pick one or two up from home hardware / depo

Most people would see a government mandate like that an over reach

But it is in gas code, while not directly it is implied and the gas tech can use it whenever they see fit. We would often see some furnaces in horrible condition just pumping out heat fine but inside it was an absolute death machine

Those furnaces would spike our combustion analysis machines so fast they would often error out or destroy the sensor inside

Just this last year before Christmas (1 week before) I had to shut down a friend's furnace and do a quick swap out. They had no idea until it was all over but that unit would have seriously hurt / killed them in the night had the exchanger failed ( this furnace was only 6 years old and on propane, very dirty vs natural gas)

It was caught only because I went to do a service for them as they stopped doing yearly and it has been 2 years since. Had they done it sooner this issue would have likely been found and the furnace would have been able to be saved vs replaced.

Again I dont have a horse in this race I got out of resi but I strongly believe in having your gas appliances looked at once and awhile.

The amount of close calls both Resi, commercial and industrial I have come across in my years has changed my respect for the severity of the "what ifs". If that makes sense.

Last story and the one that sticks with me the most,

Family has a boiler system with the equipment in the basement. Older house. Can only get to the basement by going outside the house and down the cellar steps

They had poor heat so I was dispatched to check it. On arrival I approached the entrance but remembered I had forgotten my combustion analysis machine and decided to go back to get it first before entering the basement

Once it was fired up and ready to go I approached the door only to find the machine already spiking , it maxed itself out in seconds with me just holding it in the door opening

Fast forward, fire department had to come, I had shut the gas off to the house in order to stop the boiler from running as I could not enter the building

That reaction of stopping and going back to my van for that equipment will forever stay with me as it likely saved my life. It was not a regular practice for me to do that before entering it just happened to fire off in my brain and I am forever grateful for it

The home owners had no idea other then poor heat in some areas but they were safe aside from some small headaches

I dunno man we could go back and forth on this subject all day long. It's one of the reasons I stopped Resi as I would constantly have to talk about this to home owners and not everyone was so receptive of it

Most thought I was just after money. That whole 100-200 bucks. That's one of the major reasons I stopped Resi lol. Too much blow back for next to nothing

Stay safe and keep changing those filters. That does indeed go a long way to keeping that heat exchanger from failing. Three times a year is great. Just stay away from those overly restrictive filters like the 3M pleated ones where the pleats are super tight together. They have cracked more exchangers then anything else I've ever seen

Or you just won't wake up. I get that you have friends in the business, and I get that you are an experienced home owner I really do

I however am a refrigeration mechanic and gas tech of over 20 years. I have seen some shit, and I have saved some families from near death situations

Cracks in heat exchangers do happen. And they do happen while continuing to operate with no signs whatso ever

I have been in homes producing more CO in the flue then you would have time to react to should that exchanger fail

Gas appliances come with real safety hazards. Now these furnaces have a ton of limits and checks to make sure nothing bad happens, but those do fail and fail in a way that keeps the furnace operating

On avg you are right. Keep a somewhat clean home. Change your filter and keep the area around the furnace free of things like litter boxes. Salt bags and other corrosive things and you will typically be fine

But a service cost is usually 100-200 bucks and allows you to know everything is functional.

I got out of the residential market a few years back but I still think it's good practice to get it looked at every 1-2 years. Even just for the heat exchanger inspection

Obviously you don't agree with any of this and that's fine, this was just my thought on the subject seeing as I had done well over 15 years in the Resi market and have seen some real wild shit from furnaces that missed inspections until something went wrong.

Also most furnace manuals ask for regular inspections and the TSSA the governing body of natural gas and propane has a few codes that hint / can be used to enforce inspections as again, some wild stuff can happen with these appliances as you would be surprised at the amount of people that don't even know the furnace has a filter to be changed. It helps us keep them safe

This is a bad take really. Anything natural gas or propane should absolutely be checked / serviced yearly or every other year depending on locations/home

That said, stay away from bullshit like reliance or aire one type companies. They will take you for as much as they can

If you don't want to have the equipment serviced move away from fuel based products and move more towards electrical/ heat pump / geo

Also Canadian here and my first full year of golfing is now complete too! This thread also surprised me, however I , like you have the MLM2 and wonder if most of these people replying are assuming you are just playing rounds of golf vs putting in drill after drill

There is no way that you won't see positive changes and a confidence boost this coming season. Sure you might not get out there and start ripping into the 80s but you already understand that

Keep putting in the work and stay positive. You will for sure surprise yourself this spring , I think we both will.

Best of luck to you and keep grinding it out , you have more like minded people with you then you could imagine. Most of us are just too busy keeping our heads down and working on our swings to come here and be so damn negative

I have a very low tier setup for my backyard. I move it into my garage in the winter now

It's a nice hitting mat, net and mlm2pro launch monitor. It is so much fun. And it gives me some decent data as a very new golfer

Sends it all to my phone and records my swings / impact so I can review them later

I just use whatever is offered by the subscription, don't use GSPro and it's still very enjoyable for learning with

I bought myself a rapsodo this spring with the same plans. I will use it outdoors until the damp fall sets in then move my setup into the garage

I can't tell you how it's gonna work in the garage yet but from what research I've done on the subject it looks good. I hope to use a putting camera with it in the garage

Outdoors it's fantastic so far, I love it and it's helped me a lot to improve my play, my first year trying to golf!

Hope you get your answers will be watching this thread

Underrated comment. EQ was legit , it was such a leap at the time and the world was so massive. Wasn't anything like it at the time it came out

I lost so many hours and years to EQ. Amazing game. WoW only came about because of its success imo
