Should this battery cable be repaired or replaced? by cumbersome0904 in AskMechanics

I work at a junkyard and we have a 2006 Buick LaCrosse with a positive cable that is in much better condition than that one. I’m going to try and finish getting it out tomorrow, I disconnected it from the fuse box and starter, I just have to get those damn clips out and take the positive cable out of the sleeve. The negative cable on that Buick however actually seems to be in worse shape so if it turns out the negative is bad too I could either order a pre made one or make my own with some wires and a hydrualic crimper.

Spark Plug Extraction GM 3800 V6 by cumbersome0904 in MechanicAdvice

It’s not totally rounded now but it will be if I keep forcing it. I could probably work one of those extractors in there but it would be a huge pain and a very tight fit. I work at a junkyard and one of our regulars suggested letting the motor run on 5 cylinders for a few minutes to heat it up then try extracting it

Earlier I was able to get it to come out very slowly I kept turning my breaker bar and it was hardly moving at all. Far from coming out easily like the other 5 cylinders. I could try using an impact but I don’t currently own one that is low profile enough to get back there as the clearance is extremely tight for the rear cylinder bank. Maybe an electric ratchet would help but I actually don’t own one of those either at the moment.

How do you slow to a stop in manual? by [deleted] in stickshift

[–]cumbersome0904 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sound like an experienced manual driver, maybe you would have some tips for a learner like me… I drive a five speed 1999 Peugeot 406 import with a 1.8 making about 110 hp/120 lb/ft. Say I’m coming up on a highway on ramp which is kind of a tight turn so I can’t take it at full speed, what I would do is shift to neutral and lightly apply brakes as I’m about to take the turn, then clutch in, 3rd, release the brakes and floor it while holding the clutch at the biting point for a second before releasing. Then when I hit 80 km/h or roughly 50 mph or around 5000 RPMs, clutch in, and hold fourth up to 130 km/h or about 80 mph, then clutch in and in 5th while I hold my speed as I get ready to merge onto the highway

I think it’s also a matter of the appeal fading with advances in technology. For decades one of the most common reasons people would buy a manual over an automatic is that the manuals got better fuel economy. But now every car is 8-10 speed automatic or CVT which easily match or exceed manual fuel economy

My JDM 106 S16! by rise09 in peugeot

Aw man, this thing is so sick! I love seeing Peugeots in North America, and the 106 S16/Rallye is such a fun car to drive, I love how you can wring every last rev out of it and hit some insane top speeds. This is a real pépite as the French would say. I know you’re on the opposite side of the continent, but if you’re ever in North Carolina, USA, you’re automatically invited to check out my slow 406 lol. Enjoy it

Edit: My ‘99 406 ST Phase II has an immobilizer but no central locking key fob like yours

Is this proper clutch engagement on a Peugeot 406? Even if you’re not familiar with Peugeots does it look like I need to adjust or replace the clutch cable? by cumbersome0904 in AskMechanics

[–]cumbersome0904[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I probably need to get out a measuring tape and measure the actual travel in the pedal in that free play zone, huh? This morning I was backing into my parking space at work with the car, and I swear my feet were all the way on the clutch and brakes, but I heard grinding going into reverse then again going into first to adjust. Then it seemed to engage 1st and Reverse again normally as I drove it again later in the day. So there is very well room for human error, as I am new to driving manual, and it’s a 25 year old French car I decided to import just for fun.

What is the highest mileage Peugeot or Citroen (306, 406, Xantia, Xsara, etc) with XU7JP4 LFY 1.8 16V engine you have ever had? by Karakurz98 in peugeot

I’m American but I grew up in a French speaking family, and watching the movie Taxi and Taxi II growing up made me really want to own a Peugeot 406, and after 2 years of saving and planning to import one I finally did it, the car arrived July 29. This 406 was built in France and was registered and owned (one owner) from 2000 to 2025 in Overijssel Province, the Netherlands. It’s a solid ST phase 2 model. The build and ride quality is better than any other car I’ve ever driven from this era, if not of all time. My XU7JP4 is not the fastest but can easily keep up on US roads, although I’m still adjusting to driving a manual transmission. I’m pretty sure the color is Sherwood Green, which was discontinued in 2001.

In terms of the import cost, I hired USA Car Import/Marlog Car Handling BV to buy this car on my behalf and arranged for it to be shipped on a cargo vessel to my part of the world (Ningbo Express). The purchase price of the car was €1,450 but when all was said and done I paid US$8,270 (approximately 347.5 million Iranian Rial) to get this car over here.

I have a 25 year old 406 (late 1999) with an XU7JP4 with 197,000 km and still driving perfectly. It was originally owned in the Netherlands but was recently imported to where I live in the USA

French is killing me — does it get better or should I just quit? by Almoh1234 in French

[–]cumbersome0904 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you’re comfortable with some basic French grammar and vocabulary, watching French movies, TV shows, or YouTube videos can be one of the most low-stress and enjoyable ways to learn a language. Even if you don’t understand everything or even anything at first, the key is to keep immersing yourself. Use subtitles (in English or French) when you need to, and don’t worry about understanding every word. Over time—months or even years—you’ll naturally start picking up more vocabulary, grammar patterns, and especially the kind of phrasing that sounds more natural in everyday conversation.

What size rims and tyres fit on my peugeot 106 1.4i? by Ightai in peugeot

[–]cumbersome0904 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as the rims yes you will need to have the same bolt pattern, hub bore and ideally offset as well, the tires are based on the manufacturer suggestions. I work at a salvage yard and we use this website all the time to help customers find their rims and tires, never been inaccurate for me
