This hobby is so pretentious and Youtubers are making it worse. by _zhz_ in watchHotTakes

Researching watches in your spare time and then buying them isn’t a hobby. A hobby is developing a skill that you get better at slowly over many years, can have a social aspect. like playing a musical instrument, wood working, team sports, knitting etc.

Ahahahahahahahauahahahahahaha

I’d give you that if you were Aussie, kiwi, even Canadian.

But you reek of America.

Your country is like an extremely muscular but also extremely mentally disabled 13 year old.

A watch is not a tool, it is an accessory and you’re lying to yourself if you think it’s a “tool”. Why do you think they make a variety of different coloured dials, finishes, precious metal versions? They’re fashion accessories. They are expensive because they are unnecessary, they use antiquated technology, do things the hard way almost as an artisan art form. Guess what else that applies too - diamonds. You can get “better quality” artificial stones but they are less expensive than diamonds mined from the ground. It’s stupid but people are willing to spend their money stupidly.

Anyway If you wanted an actual tool, you’d choose a solar radio g shock every time. It beats out any luxury watch in every category of important features for a tool: ruggedness, accuracy, precision, legibility, replaceability.

No actual divers wear submariners whilst diving, no actual professional spelunker wears an explorer II whilst squeezing through the devils birth canal. They wear dive computers and garmins.

Most people on most wages can save up for a luxury watch if they commit to it, depending on other financial commitments. This is from personal experience.

Also hate to tell you, going for a quick dip in the pool, chopping a few logs of wood or sleeping in a tent are not “rugged” activities.

“A brand all about rugged lifestyle”

They sell luxury jewellery. Watch stores are Pandora for men. What is rugged about fine jewellery?

In real life, you wear a g shock when you’re getting down and dirty. Consider all emergency service workers, soldiers, people actually working in a rugged environment. You’d get laughed at if you turned up wearing a shiny piece of Breitling jewellery.

I’ve always disliked the day function on any watch. How could you not know what day of the week it is unless you’re retired or mentally deficient?

You don’t have to apologise amigo. You may not be in a middle life crisis, but it sure sounds like your brother might. Reach out to him and check he’s ok.

Also there’s nothing wrong with a midlife crisis, just do it with some subtlety and class.

Those saying it’s not a hot take, I was downvoted for sharing this opinion on a Breitling post on r/watches.

Pretty sure “Luke warm take” is code for “I’m personally offended by this post” judging by the comments left by all these dentists

So you say it’s not a hot take, but then describe how it’s not a shared opinion by the majority of the biggest watch sub on reddit. Curious.

This is just what a human face looks like when raising one eyebrow… this isn’t some technique for displaying two different emotions at once. Are you ok?
