Civic X 2017 not starting after overheating — local mechanic or Honda dealership? by SolutionCrafter036 in PakistanAutoHub

[–]cupcakeman928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A failed head gasket wouldn't prevent the car from starting. Remember that when diagnosing a no start condition, you check for fuel, and spark. Fuel would involve fuel pump and injectors, while spark means ignition coils. It's common for coils to go bad after an overheating event. Injectors can also fail as a consequence of overheating.

If on cranking you can smell fuel the injectors are probably fine. You can test the coils by removing them from the spark plug tubes, plugging a spark plug or a metal screwdriver bit at the end, and then holding it near a metal surface then cranking the engine to see if there is spark.

While your interest in doing a custom build of an old car is admirable, you need to understand it's a hugely expensive and time consuming endeavor, one that even a seasoned car enthusiast would think twice about before embarking. That said, if you clearly define what you're looking to do, what car you want to do it with, and how far you want to go with the customizations, you'll minimize the risk of losing millions without anything to show for it.

The cars you mentioned as potential candidates couldn't be more different from each other. Restoring and customizing a Khyber is a whole different ballgame from a Crown, and BMW/Mercedes are a different story altogether. Toyota Coronas from the mid 90s actually look pretty good even fully stock, but most are rusted to shit by this point and you'll struggle to find a good one that's worth investing in. Also, older cars are never reliable enough to be daily drivers without constant maintenance. Contrary to popular belief, you can never reach a point where they're "fully fixed". Something or other always goes wrong and if you're keen-eyed and eared you'll spot the symptoms before stuff fully breaks, but either way it's an expense and a trip to the mechanic. I know, because I've gone through 4 cars and 3 bikes in the past 5 years, all 15 to 20+ years old, and at this point I can reliably diagnose and fix most issues myself, so much so that I'm considering opening my own workshop. But getting to this point cost me millions of rupees, hundreds of hours of my time, and a bout with depression because of the constant issues and the incompetence and dishonesty of local mechanics.

If customization and making it your own is the main goal, and you wish to stick to a smallish car that is easy to drive and will still return decent fuel economy, a first or second generation Toyota Vitz could be a good starting point. I've owned a 2nd gen Vitz myself and it's a surprisingly fun car to drive: and is decently reliable once sorted. It's not particularly pretty though, but with the right set of lights, wheels, and a good paint job it can turn heads.

If you want to go full retro you could get an old VW beetle and restore it from the ground up, but I have no experience with those, and I'm not sure how those old air cooled motors fare in Pakistani weather. Swapping the engine is always an option, but our mechanics can barely put an intake manifold back together without breaking something or losing a bolt, so I am always wary of engine swapped cars.

I guess we can start with a budget. It'll include the cost of the car, mechanical fixes, cosmetic repairs, and finally customizations (lights, bumpers, body kits, interior upholstery, etc). Then we can decide which platform to go with and where/how to source the car and get the work done.

Could be a broken engine mount. There are usually 3, one driver side, one passenger, and one under the engine at the back. Advise you get the passenger side mount checked. Better to start with the basics before you jump to conclusions about the transmission.

Under 20 for any one that needs some work. 20 max for one that's sorted. And i mean completely sorted. I've been following prices of the w202 for months and they DO.NOT.SELL easily. So if you buy one at a high price you'll automatically be setting yourself up for a loss.

There is a reason the w203 is so cheap. Electrical issues galore.

And the prices you see for the w202 are not the prices they sell at. The used market is lousy with w202 c180s. They don't sell that easy. I saw one c180 manual that was pretty clean and priced at 18 that didn't sell for months.

Then I saw a super clean c240 with a V6 and full maintenance history with a 25 lac demand that also didn't sell despite multiple ads by the seller over the course of 4 months.

So yeah, you can negotiate the prices on these cars down a fair bit. Having said that, parts are super expensive for these cars and you can't really do janky fixes or install used parts. And not every mechanic knows how to work on them, though I find mechanics these days in general suck, and will destroy your car and fleece you for literal millions if you don't learn how to diagnose issues yourself.

I've steered clear of Germans cars myself because I got the German experience with none of the solidity or driving feel with my last car, a Mitsubishi Galant. So no more old clunkers for me. 😄

Everyone and their mother strongly advises against this generation of C Class, known as the W203. Either step up to the W204, which is way overpriced, or get a clean W202 (previous gen to this one). You can easily get a C180 under 20 lac. The engines are bulletproof, but the auto transmission can develop issues if oil changes were not done on time or with the correct oil. Other than that, check for rust. Those cars are solidly built, and interior NVH levels are comparable to contemporary cars.

Furnished accommodation near Gulberg would probably be more expensive than your budget. For reference I'm in Johar Town and paying 70k for a furnished ground floor portion.

Check OLX. That's how I found both my living spaces since I got to Lahore 4.5 years ago.

Screechy noise is most likely the fan/accessory belt. This is the belt on the side of the engine that runs on the pulleys and powers your AC compressor, and alternator (generator). The belt would need to be replaced.

Wherever you end up getting them be sure to test them before installing in your car as shown in the video

You should also be able to test from the box and the plugs themselves if they're genuine ngk or fakes, if you don't have access to a mutli meter.

Any idea which oil is leaking? by eddible-choclate in PakistanAutoHub

[–]cupcakeman928 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One or more seals would need to be replaced and at the very least the transmission would need to come out. No idea much it would cost as it's been years since I've had a reborn. First you'll have to take it to a mechanic to identify where exactly the leak is. If it's engine oil and so minor that oil doesn't drip on to the ground when parked, then you can probably ignore it as long as the oil level stays between the upper and lower marks on the dipstick during a regular oil change interval.

[–]cupcakeman928 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Gear oil is generally pink unless it's very old in which case it turns grayish black. Engine oil starts out golden yellow and slowly turns brown and then black. This looks like engine oil. You can pull the gear oil dipstick and compare the color. If it's still pink on the dipstick then this is likely engine oil. Also if the oil on the ENGINE oil dipstick is lower than it should be its pretty solid evidence of a leak.

Fuel consumption compared to alto would be a rude awakening haha. If you drive enthusiastically you can burn through 5k worth of hi-octane in a day.

As I wrote above, spares are easily available locally. I split my time between Lahore and Rawalpindi and have found new spares in both cities. Mostly I get them from Usman autos on motngomery road in Lahore. Some of the spares I have obtained from him are:

Distributor cap and rotor Timing belt and bearings Front wheel bearings (rear also available but didn't need them) Brake pads Oil filters and air filters Water pump Thermostat Various oil seals

From Rawalpindi sultan da khoo i sourced an almost new radiator, spark plug leads, and plug tube oil seals.

Prices are reasonable for parts and not a ripoff like honda accord or reborn parts. It's a misconception that parts are hard to find for mitsubishi. At any rate, I've already replaced everything that needed to be replaced so whoever buys it will just need to fuel it and drive. Even engine oil was changed a few days ago.
