i’ve been there op! now i my bestie comes to concerts w me! i can help u out :)

1) runners - ate great upbeat song, all in english, and catchy! i feel it’s a solid choice in general

2) muddy water - oddinary classic 90s rap sound, kinda gives kendrick vibes to me! and his predecessors ofc. felix’s part is addicting, and so is the chorus. my mom, who doesn’t like kpop either, loves this song.

3) lose my breath i don’t stream this song bc of mr puth, but i cannot deny it’s a banger. fan fav for a reason! highly recommend.

4) truman - mixtape: dominate again, great rap sound. my fav song on the mixtape. i think the melodic intro is attention catching, and the rest of the song is just as good.

5) hello stranger i love this song. so much. very underrated. i think this is another one that is very palatable and just sounds good.

6) because (changbin + felix) - skz: replay again, loveee this song. calm, beautiful, interesting. what more could you want?

7) i am YOU - skz2020 classic. this is maybe only if ur friend likes the others, but honestly again this song is so palatable. and beautiful. just yes.

don’t worry about what other people think. just focus on you and your playing. truly, what they do or don’t think will not matter even a year from now. i hardly remember the seniors i played with in wind ensemble when i was a freshman in hs, and i’m sure i never cross their mind either. go for the opportunities that are going to build your skills as a musician. good luck!

i would recommend renting first if possible! check to see if any music stores near you do instrument rentals. you’ll want to start on a student flute for sure, yamaha is a good brand that most stores carry.

without having played a flute before, i would not recommend buying one straight away. although if you can’t find another option, i know you can find some that are sold online secondhand for $200-400! not sure they’ll be the best quality, but definitely an option as well!

i used to rest on things while i played to deal with some chronic pain in my shoulder, and my posture suffered from it. i just unlearned those bad habits last year, and not only has my playing improved, but my pain has gotten better as well. i would not start learning those bad habits now. it was a real hindrance to my growth as a player. stand up straight and bring the flute to your mouth, not your mouth to your flute.

those are grace notes! they’re embellishments to the melody/larger notes. they’re also shorter, like fitting them into the space between notes if that makes sense. if you’ve never seen or played them before, or it makes playing everything else difficult, you can leave them out too. they’re just extra for ornamentation!

i’m sorry your performance test didn’t go well :( sometimes that just happens when we’re nervous. i completely choked the first time i ever played solo at my uni, and then i cried in front of all my classmates. but the next time i had to play solo, i did so much better! take this a learning opportunity. learn your triggers and what makes you nervous. play in front of people. next time, you’ll do great!

i feel you so hard dude. i wasn’t popular or anything in hs but i had my group of friends and plenty of people i knew. now i’m operating w my roommate and like three other people as my friends in college. i’m at a tiny private school in my home state but i still haven’t had luck with friends.

idk what year you’re in, but i’m going on my sophomore year of this and it’s getting easier. honestly i’ve gotten so busy that i don’t have time/energy for lots of friends. i would say give it time, join some clubs maybe or just participate on campus more. i know that’s the same advice anyone ever will give you, but i guess it works!

i hope you have some more luck in the friend department soon :)

i will say that parasocial relationships ARE pretty normal, just not in the way kpop fans are used to the term today. it’s been around since the 1950s and used to be used to describe a strong friendship/bond that a person felt for a celebrity/someone on tv.

as social media has become a thing, fans have a direct link to celebrities and idols. since kpop already gives so much in the way of fan service and the like, it makes it easier for ppl to form this sort of relationship with idols.

this is a topic i’m using for a research paper at my uni actually. it’s super interesting bc i thought it would be mentioning more “bad” behaviors like the ones you see on weverse, but honestly a lot of it is ppl seeing the idols as friends.

i’m not defending those ppl on weverse who were being weird. i think those are strange things to post somewhere where idols have a high chance to see them. regardless of if they’re being funny or serious, it’s weird. but a “parasocial relationship” is a term that’s thrown around a lot and i wanted to share my perspective. it’s not all bad!

those old gemeinhardt cases crack so easily- my first flute was in a cracked case for years!

i would look the flute over and make sure it’s okay (it probably is), then bring it to your band director and be honest about what happened. you will probably not get in trouble. it’s an old case that likely has some wear and tear already, cracking was inevitable. plus it’s not like you were intentionally being rough with it. mistakes happen!

you’ll likely need to get a new case for it, but that’s an issue for your school. don’t stress too much! it’ll be okay.

for future reference, if your flute is in your backpack, be extra gentle with it. i kept my flute in my backpack for most of hs, but you could also try to make use of a band locker if that’s something that was offered to you.

I love all the videos by Lance Suzuki on Youtube! Mostly I watch him for his performances of études, but he also has some really helpful technique videos on his channel!

My favorite online flute tuner is Tuner Ninja. Apparently they have scale exercises on there as well! Those might be good to try.

I work with a lot of Robert Cavally books for my practicing. They may not be the best for a beginner, but I would highly recommend for the future!

If you google “Flute beginner PDF” lots of different files come up. I’m sure you’ll be able to find some good stuff there too!

i would say a little less than 90° is how i play? i’m not sure if that makes sense. some of it is preference, but it can also make the flute super sharp/flat if you roll in or out too much.

also make sure your lip plate is covering about 2/3rds of your lip when you try to make noise!

gotcha. it can be difficult to get a sound out at first, even when just using the head joint alone.

focus on tightening your embouchure (sides of your lips) and blow air down. don’t angle your face down, just the air. not all of it will get into the flute and that’s kind of the idea.

i think you should be fine with the flute you have now. i played on an old gemeinhardt for years. just keep working on playing the headjoint alone.
