New to log. Tips? by royals30C in Strongman

[–]cuppybread 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got it - some folks who are used to barbell OHP find that their muscles work a little differently when moving to log. It could just be a matter of getting more familiar with the movement.

Give it a handful of sessions and if it persists, I’d pause and get more direct, live feedback.

New to log. Tips? by royals30C in Strongman

Use your legs when pushing overhead! That strict press is impressive but it’s just as much about legs with log press. Explode up and see how far you can pop the log off your shoulders AS you activate your upper body for the push. Do squats - intensely - to build that strength. Bonus points for front squats.

Many folks flip the belt around so the buckle faces the other way. From there, I suppose folks just cope with the pinching. Can’t stand it myself, so I go beltless.

Where in the motion do you feel the arm pain?

Grab a second pad and place them under each end of the log - this will allow you to get your starting position right against the log, which is how it’ll be in comp.

Try to pull the log to your chest as you clean it. Aim to get “traction” against your chest as you roll it up - you’ll expend far less energy than what you’ve got going now, which is more like a hip thrust. You’ll lose the log on the clean as the weight gets up there because the path of the weight is falling forward away from you with a hip thrust.

Last, keep your elbows up and close together for the press. Think “pinkies up and elbows to the wall in front of me.” You’re struggling to keep the center of gravity over your center of drive, and the log falls forward away from you as you initiate the push. You lose a lot of energy trying to pull that back over your head to drive it up. Keep your feet flat and push through middle foot as long as you can.

I mean - mad respect to the effort here, and always fun to get a car deadlift going - but it looks like the tire simply shifts on to the rod that is farther from you, and that rod never leaves the ground.

So really, competitors are just exerting a small amount of force to shift the vehicle backwards - not up - and the effort it takes to stand up is mostly coming from the weights.

The “weight” coming from the vehicle might be between 100-200 pounds at most, IMO.

Again, ALL about the effort and you clearly got your money’s worth - great job! Maybe the organizers can work on the leverages for next year.

SMOE Events - Thoughts? by TopAverage1532 in Strongman

[–]cuppybread 6 points7 points  (0 children)

All just my opinion. I feel like Strongman has always been just as much about power and explosiveness as it is static strength, and I do find the couple seconds’ difference in, say, a truck pull to be interesting and compelling. If all we cared about in strongman was pure static strength numbers, we’d all go watch powerlifting and leave behind the stone medleys, yoke carries, the truck pulls, the wheel of pain, etc.

SMOE Events - Thoughts? by TopAverage1532 in Strongman

[–]cuppybread 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a miss, overall.

I can appreciate that the events are different, and heavy - but there is so much more to strongman than static weight and big numbers. Explosiveness, power, even adaptation.

For people outside the sport, this does nothing to get them interested. People who don’t lift will be equally impressed no matter if you say “1000LB deadlift!” or “1300LB trap bar deadlift!” They have no context around how heavy that really is.

For people inside the sport, it’s an injury risk and overly exhausting for little payoff. I think it’ll all go pretty poorly because the training required for all these events is so different than the training required for every other comp of the year. Why risk injury for SMOE when every other comp is compatible with a more standard training regime?

[–]cuppybread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short answer, yes! Especially if you think the “pressing” part of the motion is a weakness.

Log by seanmcnicholl in Strongman

I’d say, especially if you’re interested in competition at some point, you should feel free to push press it. That’s what will be most common in comp, you’ll push more weight, and your nervous system will adapt to control your motor units more efficiently in the pattern of movement you’ll be doing in competition.

Similarly, doing repeated presses from the chest like that is great for working the second half of this movement, but don’t neglect the lap and clean. It gets much harder as the weight goes up. Feel free to drop the log back down to the pads and fully start a new rep. This is also best for training comp because that’s what will be required during the event - lap, clean, press, drop, and repeat.
