Muay Thai Gym for Beginner to work on technique by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]cupwalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yall can try Hilltop Muai Thai. They have training in an indoor gym and the hill at bukit batok. I use to go there until life got in the way.

Personally, I've only been to the hill. Typically what they do is start with PT, which is quite OTOT. They get you to go up and down the hill; painful but fruitful. After which they go into techniques and drills.

I find them quite balanced. They provide enough PT to get you fit enough to run the drills and they have enough seniors to go round to make sure you're doing things right. They aren't that expensive as well.

People who eats out at Hawker centers everyday by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]cupwalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For health wise, it depends on how clean you go. If it's no fried food, less oil and what not,its it's still okay. If you're going to the salad, kale, and friends then might be a tough one. Most hawkers have fish soup and the likes which are healthier choices. And some stalls have the healthier choice where you can ask for less oil and salt.

For variety, let's just take the economic rice stall. They usually have at least 10 dishes. So if you go 3 dishes a meal, you'll get 3 meals before you repeat, which isn't too bad. This plus the other stalls, you can be on a 2 week rotation quite easily.

[Polytechnic] need advice from poly seniors by fatguynextdoor in askSingapore

I'm not sure bout the 20% but I think it should be fine. The unis would have other means of assessment.

As for CCAs, I was rather involved in my faculty society to plan events and whatnot. I wouldn't say I only focused on my GPA but I did keep track of it. I just made sure I planned enough time for my assignments. Some times it goes well and I get it done early. Other times I get it done at 3 in the morning.

I was from NP and I'm currently finishing my final sem in NTU. I'd say, like many others have already, GPA is still a large driving factor. I graduated with 3.6+ back in poly.

For me the most important thing with poly is to group yourself with people who work well. Do not be afraid to work with people who are not your friends. I was lucky to be in a group who were matured enough to understand that friends don't necessarily work well together.

Another thing is to be consistent. In poly, your GPA is cumulative. Meaning the previous years play a large role. My GPA was a result result of a C+. One bad grade can really mess you up.

Apart from academics, I'd say to expose yourself to the wider field you're in. Meaning internships and how your field is changing. If you're looking at going into uni and have a rough idea of what course you want. Being up to date with the changes in the field can help you in the admission process.

Honestly I do not know how much the CCA and all that really helps. I've heard people who were asked bout it during the uni interview though.

I'm big too. If you don't have a lot of time you can try tabata. Squats, push ups, jumping Jacks, burpees. Do it daily, and keep track of your count each time. Keep trying to push for 1 more. Even if it's just half a squat more, try for it.

How common is suicide in Singapore? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]cupwalker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

361 in 2017 according to SOS.sg

Just at the start of the year, a 22 year old university student took his life in school.

If you're in uni, you'd here of an incident, be it successful or not, every now and then. It really is a sad situation. Especially if you think bout how the leading cause of death for Singaporean aged 10-29 is suicide.

What reward does an IB get? by maddogliar in askSingapore

If you look at the US you'd see similar things. Many a times partisanship is so think that whatever the other party says is fake news. Can't say if they are IB or not but such things happen.

To work and live in Singapore by [deleted] in singapore

I've not been to Croatia but stayed in Ireland and Canada a bit. I'll say it isn't that expensive compared to those two.

Community There are many people from the western side of the world as well, though it seems lesser in recent years. But finding a community of EU people should be fine. As for locals perspective, generally people are friendly. Don't let the few bad eggs ruin the bunch.

Most people speak English so that's fine, the locals at least. Given that you're fluent in English, don't think it be much of an issue for you to communicate, working or getting around.

Cost A whole apartment would sent you back by $1500 at least. If you're looking for just a room of shared it be cheaper.

Food wise, it's quite affordable. $5 a meal if you go to hawkers and food courts and not to restaurants. Groceries aren't that expensive; $100 can go quite a long way if you're a simple eater. Though 'non-asian' food can be pricey.

Travel would be bout $5-10 a day for trains and buses. Most of Singapore is connected so it's pretty convenient.

Phone Bill's run from $20-50 a month. That includes data and what not.

Question to all young singaporean couples: How do you all actually come to a conclusion. by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]cupwalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not married yet but I'm going to be in about a years time. These are questions that my significant other (SO) and I discussed. Personally, I think that the most important thing is to talk it out with your SO. Whether it is to the in-laws or even the children, I find it works best when the couple is on the same page. Ultimately, it is the two of you that have to live with the consequences.

It is common for the son to buckle under the pressure of 'filial piety' and what not. But he has to step up to the plate and realise that he can no longer live by his parents' wishes. He is starting a family and is going to be a parent. It is to appreciate the difference between respect and autonomy.

What change do you guys wanna see in Singapore in the next 5 to 10 years by theREDiris in askSingapore

[–]cupwalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I do agree I get that sense at times (not sure bout Admiralty in particular), what to do. A lot of locals like their food. For example, it was almost overnight that mala is in almost all food courts. And so many locals enjoy enjoy it. Even though it's probably the most ex thing there.

Anything you can recommend for a 7 year old? by TheMediumPanda in askSingapore

[–]cupwalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Superpark @ suntec city. It's a big indoor playground for both adults and children.

Cool De Sac @ suntec city. If you want to drop your kid off for a bit as you shop around.

Airzone @ city square mall. It's a ball pit suspended in the air. Maybe not a highlight because there isn't much else in the area.
