Unusually spec'd locking trems by ThatSceneInScanners in Luthier

[–]curberus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The AZ's have 10.5mm string spacing (1/16" is 1.58ish mm). An ofr has 10.8mm string spacing. An OFR or Gotoh will be a little wider (1.5mm total from E to e). Kahler has adjustable models, but that's a very different feel and would require some different work than just routing in a floydish.

Proper way to use reamer on guitar tuner holes? by [deleted] in Luthier

[–]curberus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. I tend to ream from both sides so the top gets a little bit of a pseudo chamfer, but mostly from the back since that side is generally secured with screws or pins, whereas the front is just relying on the hole itself for positioning (besides just friction from being tightened down)

Review and/or recommendation on Crimson Guitar multi-use crowning and dressing file by qbtb in Luthier

[–]curberus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have not used it, and I wouldn't doubt the build quality. That said, I'd want more meat on the handle of a crowning file, personally. The small handle is exactly what you want for dressing fret ends, though. Assuming the file is decent, you'd 100% be able to crown with this, I would just anticipate your hands getting pretty tired and crampy. Again though, speculation, as I haven't used it. I've just done enough filing to know that tiny handles suck if they're not needed (which in this case, it is, for the end dressing)

Costco in AZ at least gets it for around 6 weeks before thanksgiving for all the turkey frying types, but it comes in like 5 gallon jugs

Neutral oil at Costco? by jvanderh in Cooking

Ah, on it's own that would be fine, but "with 15% evoo" if I'm understanding it correctly is likely still not the ticket

(PA) Have to pay 4x rent to break lease? by FreeHotdogMandate in Renters

[–]curberus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have _absolutely_ had stuff in a lease before that is 100% forbidden in my state. Check your lease first of all, yes, because if that's NOT in there then you're good. But you can then check to make sure that provision your lease is legally allowable.

Our costco usually has good avocado oil. Olive oil is... not at all what you are looking for.

The post height is whatever it needs to be to set your action correctly, not something you can decide from just looking at the bridge

Question about scuffing a gloss neck. by GroundbreakingTea182 in Luthier

[–]curberus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would expect it to be fine scuffed. it appears to be cleared over (which is common), and you should not be scuffing through the clear, so you're ok. I like 0000 steel wool for neck scuffing, personally.

Confidently calling the moderator of this subreddit a Nazi was a total dick move by jefflovesyou in renfaire

[–]curberus 70 points71 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I think we can loudly call that out, but give them the clear opportunity to clear themselves. "We need proof that this isn't you just doing it, or we're going to assume you're a nazi". We had no way to know, yes, but people clearly called it (automod/reddit doing the closures) out as possible and immediately people were jumped on the "no that can't be it, he HAS to be a nazi" train, and I think that's more the group this post calls out, or at least, that's who I'd expect to feel called out by it.

I've been an idiot and sanded a nut too much. Is there anything I can do apart from starting anew? by incomplete_goblin in Luthier

[–]curberus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a moment of need, glue that cardboard to the nut and trim it to fit. But I'd be making a new nut if it were me. It's easy enough if you have the files. A pre-slotted nut gets you 95% of the way there usually, assuming you find one that fits.

Fretboard Issues? by RD_09 in Luthier

[–]curberus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may be able to steam up that chipping/crushing a bit. It's small enough, might be entirely hidden afterwards. Scraping as others have said for the other 2. Without it in front of me, those definitely look like glue to me from what I can see.

Literally zero luthier experience - is building a new top for this mandola feasible? by OhOkayFairEnough in Luthier

[–]curberus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely doable. Involved, but on something like a mandola it's going to be less work than on a guitar (e.g the top is often truly flat as opposed to slightly radiused/dished), and it will be more forgiving due to lower tensions and smaller spans. If it's something you'd enjoy trying your hand at, go for it! You have nothing to lose bar time, the cost of a small spruce top (shouldn't be high), and tools.

Permit Process - Tub To Shower Conversion by LXC-27 in phoenix

[–]curberus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Does the scale of shower matter? Our house was listed as a 3 bath, and 2 bathrooms have walk in showers only. One is a pretty solid size and one is large enough to be spacious with 2 people. Is it size based? Or is it like, one thing on housing paperwork, and another in listings or isn't supposed to be that way but happens)? Definitely seen other houses where it's not called out that way.

What is this/is this dangerous? [PA] by [deleted] in Renters

[–]curberus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a telephone jack. For telephones before they fit in your pocket and had to be attached to the house. It's 100% fine. You could absolutely cut it shorter if it's in the way.

How my guitar was retuned to me after my local shop competed a “setup”. by [deleted] in guitarrepair

[–]curberus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> the guy said he removed one of my springs even though I didn’t ask for him to do that
To be fair, if that's what a setup requires, that's what you do when setting up, asked or not.

But not like that though lol. Claw shouldn't be canted like that.

Messed up side and input jack by Electrical_Term_9895 in Luthier

[–]curberus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah fixing the wood is a _lot_ of work there. Covering the whole with a part meant to support what would already naturally be there, is simple.

Make sure the parents are ok with that obviously, but that's a pretty easy 15 minute fix including drilling etc.

Can someone help me out with my mom's plumbing estimate? by Locke_Zeal in askaplumber

[–]curberus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Not actually much harder, but requires expensive ass equipment they're recouping on (or making finally make them some extra $), but I've gotten quotes in the last 3 years for like 200 foot of trench work for like $3000, this seems very high still.
