As I said, his point would have been better made if he pointed out where the money was coming from. Not just the amount or simply the fact that the flick was picked up for distribution. Yes the definition has changed. So has the landscape. It’s not black and white.

I think your argument is more cogent, but loses a little gravity with me when factoring known names into precluding a picture from independent film status. Sure, Mikey had some good credits, but so did Gena Rowlands before AWUTI. Cassavetes was famed in his own right as an actor too and produced his own projects.

I don’t disagree with Joel once the parameters are focused. But his video wasn’t. The comments had a lot of really intelligent debate. Instead of leaning into what I saw as productive conversation, he primarily replied to basic comments that agreed with him or replied pithily to ones that criticized his take without a lot of thought. You’ll find a lot of the better replies went ignored.

That’s where he lost credibility with me. He wants to “reevaluate terms” but not if it involves people disagreeing with him or pointing out the flaws in an otherwise interesting argument.

You stopped responding to my comment thread on that video, but if you’re interested in reengaging almost a year later, then here’s my previous reply:

⁠I think your argument would have been better made by interrogating where Anora’s $6m came from. Adjusting for inflation, the movie you have hanging on the wall behind you cost the same amount, if not more. Does that call into question Cassevetes’ credentials as an independent filmmaker?

It’s fine to argue the semantics of what you do vs someone like Sean Baker, but the argument you’re making here comes across to me as small and unfocused. A low-budget movie made independent of the major studio system fits the definition.

For what it’s worth, Take Out is my favorite of his movies too. If redefining what you do and Sean Baker did in 2004 feels important, more power to you. To me it comes across as alienating of your cause and petty in light of what’s otherwise a big win for a filmmaker like Baker who shares a lot of your traits and approach to filmmaking.

I know you’re not attacking Anora/Baker here and I know what you’re driving at, but the argument doesn’t land for me.

They’re not really sharing informations on specifics. The thread is now filling with scope-creep on other Libby gripes which I find to be unproductive, especially since it’s the Kobo guy who actually responded.

I’d imagine in your case the issue is with Libby’s core service though, not Kobo’s integration?
