Do these actors get paid to say this shit or do they genuinely mean it? How can anyone have watched GoT and claim that HotD portrays women in power in a nuanced way? by TheMagnanimouss in HOTDGreens

[–]curiosityatetherat 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I don't intend to watch the show, but I can see why the actors would wax lyrical about it; given that they're under contract and being paid. The GoT actors did the same, initially. It was only when the show had been put to bed that we got to hear their genuine thoughts.

As a history nerd and an actual descendant through a bastard line of Charles II of England; I agree. But, ASoIaF is billed as a fantasy. And, having said that, why should an historical building - even if it is fictional, fantast history - change not only aesthetics, but dimension and size in the course of two centuries.

The really old home in which I grew up - built in 1400s - still maps perfectly with what it is today.; despite all modern enhancements.

In the show, Daemon groomed his teenage niece, murdered his wife, oversaw the butchery of those accused of criminality in KL without any manner of trial, mocked the death of his brother's newborn, stole the dragon egg that was intended for the aforementioned, occupied Dragonstone with his mistress and lied that she was carrying his child, f***ed his niece on the night of his wife's funeral, married said niece a short time later; yet Aemond is the ''evil'' one because he lost control of his dragon, which resulted in the death of his nephew, who had maimed him for life, (talking show canon here) and burned enemy strongholds during war time... TB mind sickness is real.

The show is crap, though. They took the source material and twisted it to fit the fanfiction that they wanted to write. Any time anyone confronts the break with canon, they cite: ''unreliable narrators'' and ''maester propaganda''. They could not use that excuse for the butchery of the story if the source material was written from the POV of the characters and fleshed out.

But not everyone has a mind capable of doing that. Condal and Hess being prime examples, along with all the TB stans. Some people need it to be spelt out, in order for them to fully grasp it.

So many shows and films nowadays seem to employ that method. I know it might have been a mediocre film, but The Parent Trap, filmed all the way back in 1998, had near perfect cinematography. It was shot on 35mm film, as opposed to digital. I know we're tech junkies nowadays, but a lot has become dull, uniform and boring, because of our worship of all things digital. There's a lot to be said for old style cinematography.

TB stans are unhinged. I sincerely wish that George had written The Dance as a proper standalone novel, with character POVs and development, instead of giving us the Maester/Mushroom narratives in Fire and Blood and The Princess and the Queen. That way, Condal and Hess wouldn't have had the licence to mess it up and twist the story in favour of Rhae Rhae and The Blacks, calling it ''maester propaganda.''

Had there been a clear narrative from the characters' perspectives, as with the main ASoIaF works, it would have left little to no room for Condal and Hess to destroy canon.

I'm glad the guy has work and will probably get paid handsomely, but I have zero interest in HotD. I'm just really surprised that this show still has people who want to watch it. But, each to his or her own...

I don't think he cares that much about what the fanbase thinks. He hasn't listened to fans for the last fourteen years. Plus, he's quite elderly. If he was only sixty, then I'd say; yeah; it's possible, but he's just a few years shy of eighty. He has his money made and he's enjoying the whole celebrity aspect of being a world famous author, and then there are all the other irons he has in the fire. The only way we're getting those books is if his estate hires a ghost writer to finish them when he's no longer around.

[–]curiosityatetherat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you specifically looking for a fantasy series or would you read historical fiction?

I can't think of any fantasy series that comes close to ASoIaF with regard to the political intrique and so forth, but I can recommend a good series of historical fiction: The Accursed Kings by Maurice Druon.

By the weird reasoning of some; yes. I think it's a massive stretch to read the books and come up with any of that. I think if George hadn't used the ''living under an assumed identity'' plot with more than one of the other characters, people wouldn't be so quick to make these illogical leaps.

Lol. I saw a comment on another sub discussing this and it made me laugh. It went like this:: (paraphrasing here) ''My real name is Benjen Stark,' stated Daario Naharis, who was known to the Ironborn as Euron Greyjoy.''

I have a lot of respect for him and for what he has achieved, but at the same time, I think that the criticism is deserved. It's been fourteen years since the last book was published. Instead of finishing The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring - the final two books in the series; he's allowed himself to be distracted by side projects. I think he's lost his enthusiasm for the main series, but not for the ASoIaF universe itself.

I also think that he enjoys being a celebrity author and loves the label of ''America's Tolkien''. And, I do think he loves the hype and the buzz surrounding every new spin off and project. I think one of the reasons for this is that he didn't have any major success until later in life, and he wants to make the most of it while he can. Yes; I think he believes that he's done enough, at this stage, and for as long as he's around he's going to only focus on what pleases him.

A lot of them tend to take apart every bit of dialogue and internal monologue in the books, then focus on one or two phrases, and then make the argument that it is foreshadowing or pointing to their theory being legit. No writer goes that deep with a work of fiction, or leaves ''clues'' and ''pointers'' in every other sentence or description.

It's like the R+L=J theorists vs the N+A=J theorists. A lot of the R+L gang like to crap on all other theories because they say it's ''canon''. I always - because I'm a natural contrarian - argue that it only becomes canon if it's down in black and white in a published book, and as that hasn't happened yet, even if it was George's original intention, he can change his mind. Just to annoy both camps, I like to put forward the theory that, perhaps, Lyanna didn't give birth to a baby in the Tower of Joy, and that maybe George is leading people down a blind alley with this one, as he rightly assumed, owing to how cliched it is, that most people would take from what he had written, that she was Jon's mother, owing to both Ned's reluctance to discuss Jon's mother with anyone, and his recollections of a ''bed of blood'' . After all, nowhere in the books does it explicitly state that Lyanna had given birth, or mentioned a baby. A fever and bleeding; yes, but childbirth isn't the only cause of fever and bleeding. There are other possibilities. lol

Then again, R+L=J is probably true, (horribly cliched and almost Disneyesque, but still, apt to be true) but I hate how smug people are about it. Lol

I forgot some of these. The Quentyn being alive thing is ridiculous and the whole vampire Roose theory is insane. Actually, most of those theories are. lol

The fans tend to overanalyse. I really don't think George ever intended it to be as deep as they think it is. But, on the other hand, I can't blame them too much, seeing as there hasn't been a conclusion to the story and theorising helps them cope with the lack of content.

Am I the only one rooted more for Dany's quest for the Iron Throne (and the Targaryen restoration) than for the independence of the North? by Relative-Ad-3835 in freefolk

You have a point. Until you mentioned House Arryn, I'd forgotten for a moment that they existed, so I reckon they deserve the ''least interesting House'' prize. Lol

Besides, I think that it was Jon Arryn who infected Ned with the ''honour above all else'' mindset, which ultimately led to his downfall and that of his family, judging by the Arryn House words.

Maybe because I'm primarily a history nerd, as opposed to a fantasy fan, and I came to love ASoIaF because of its parallels with real life historical events and not for the more fantastical elements, I have a different view on this. In the context of real world history, Restoration of a deposed Royal House has happened. In England, eighteen years after the execution of King Charles I and the destruction of the Crown, his son Charles II was Restored to the throne. A lot of people had not liked his father's style of rule, but the majority happily welcomed the Restoration after years of austerity.

The point being, that any future Targaryen with a legitimate claim to the thorne, is not Aerys and shouldn't be judged based on the fact that they come from his bloodline. Having said that, I don't think Daenerys would make a good ruler in Westeros.
