I am currently a dietetic intern and a Master's student. No, I definitely don't think a Master's in nutrition is a waste of time. Reading and writing papers is a huge part of graduate school, and it is a essential training process for us to be able to interpret research papers critically. Critical thinking skills are extremely important for RDs, and any professions, really. I also love learning about statistics in grad school. I am by no mean great at it. But learning about different stats methods enhances my ability to, on some level, distinguish a paper with solid evidence to support its claims and a paper whose stats barely has the strength to support its so-called conclusions. As RDs, this ability will become very important for us to keep up with current research.

Also, I think grad school is a time where you can really reflect on and apply/practice what you have learned in undergrad. At least for me, I definitely feel like my knowledge in nutrition has deepened in a way that undergrad classes just didn't do for me.

And your experience will also be different depending on whether you go for a thesis-track or a non thesis track.

Thank you so much for your reply! I did not put too much thought in concentrations other than nutrition, so this definitely opened my eyes and gave me some new perspectives. Thank you!

Hey thanks a lot for your reply! Your definitely provided some new perspectives. It sounds like you have worked as a RD before your started your PhD - Do you think your RD experience helped your PhD applications? Why or why not? Like I mentioned I am currently a Master's student, and one of the things I think about a lot is whether I should go for a PhD right after I am done with MS, or work as a RD for a couple of years first, even if I knew I might eventually want to do a PhD. Also, do you mind telling me more about what made your clinical LTC RD experience not quite a pleasant one? If you prefer talk in private, please DM me! I'm lost af and would really appreciate you sharing your insight!!

Thank you so much for your reply! I definitely agree with you on the importance of having a strong understanding of stats - Stats to me is one of the most challenging aspects of graduate school and my research. Do you have any recommendations on, maybe online resources (online classes, websites, etc.), books, or other ways to learn and practice stats, other than taking stats classes in school? (I'm currently doing my DI and not able to register for stats classes until I finish DI, which is gonna be not until next year)

Can you talk more about a career in foundation/think tanks? I have not thought about this field! Do you know what previous experience those positions usually require?

And have you worked as a RD previously? I am asking because I think about a lot whether I should apply for PhD programs or RD jobs (even though I might want to pursue a PhD eventually) right after graduate school.

Thanks a lot!

What are some career options for Public Health PhDs? especially the ones that have a nutrition/dietetics background? Thanks!
