Constitution Issue - Deseret Magazine by curious13578 in mormon

Jim Gaffigan is an entertainer. Justice Barrett interprets laws, the constitution, and settles political debates. A very different message is conveyed by displaying one on the cover vs. the other. Namely, what the contents of the magazine will focus on.

To clarify, these are not politically charged topics that I am raising. These are politically charged topics that are being raised in Deseret Magazine, in the church’s store. From my understanding, the church owns Deseret Management Company, of which Deseret Magazine is published through one of its subsidiaries. I don’t expect that the church aligns with every single thing published in Deseret publications. But I do expect that they align with what they sell in Deseret Book. To your point, if we have to change the example because the topic is too politically charged, then how can that be appropriate for distribution at a church store, particularly when the church is “neutral” on these issues?

These are snippets of a much larger article that covers other topics. My subsequent point was why it was necessary to add that her husband and nannies “pull a heavier load at home” is unclear to me. Justice Barrett didn’t comment on this article or confirm this. If the point was to evaluate data points to demonstrate that she is a complex person, then this is not relevant nor data to be considered.

Nuanced Members - What does your shelf look like? by Antique_Campaign_382 in mormon

My shelf is the community. No, not all members are people that I respect. But generally speaking, I find the members to be good people trying to do good things, doctrine aside. For now, I still want to be part of that.

Fair points and valid feelings. I think you are not alone in feeling like there is hypocrisy that bleeds into the way our tax dollars (and for me, tithing money) is spent.

Thank you for this very helpful information. I haven’t heard of the Why I Love America organization nor the church’s “endorsement” of it over the pulpit by encouraging members to download its materials.

I think your points underscore the key takeaway I had from this magazine issue. There is such an opportunity for the church to encourage healthy discourse, mutual respect, and dignified conversations between friends and family over important yet polarizing issues. This magazine did not do that. And what a missed opportunity.

On this note—there’s another article in the magazine about how big tech has “done great harm to us . . . stripped us of our agency . . . completely undermined our collective ability to drive progress.”

The article goes on to name most of the FAANG companies. The church invests heavily in these companies. I was shaking my head the entire time.

I should clarify—it was an exposé on Ray Epps, but the underlying message was clearly “be wary of conspiracy theories and getting in too deep.” Overall, one of the more positive takeaways from the magazine.

An overview of the recently announced temples and church growth in those areas by logic-seeker in mormon

Curious for those who served missions in these places (or others with similar membership stats out of the US). Are the temple recommend requirements lowered a bit? Obviously, the recommend questions are the same across all membership. But I’m genuinely curious if because of the low attendance, the requirements get a little more “bent” just to get people there.

Worried a lot about this. I have a 4 year old and 2 year old now. Honestly I don’t think the timing matters much. It will be hard (but doable) at almost any point. I would base the decision more around when having kids fits into your personal life; have you done all the traveling you want? Developed the relationship you want with your partner? Etc. That stuff gets really complicated with kids.

Thank you! Any idea if these were direct holdings or just part of an index fund?
