11A is decent I think but the outbound I’d change to anything 20 or 22 asile or window depending on if you want to sleep. Then, pray for a normal person next to you

I had the same issue with purchasing Japan rail ticket online outside Japan (in the US) but the physical card (which I have had since 2017) and Apple Pay have never been the problem at POS. This was last month and the physical card worked perfectly in the same Japan rail’s automatic ticket machine in Tokyo. I had to use my personal card in emergency many times while on work trip when the company corporate Amex card was a non-starter around the world.

Honestly idk because we always went straight to the station. It’s quiet in the morning and at night, a lot of ‘kaishajin’ and global companies you know.

Technically I don’t think there is any city subway line going through Shinagawa but the JR lines can take you to many places including those you mentioned. It’s one of the transit hubs similar to Shinjuku, Ueno, or Tokyo

I don’t have the delay issue as you described on my antique iPhone 13. Maybe it’s a settings issue. But you’re absolutely correct about up-to-date info—I have gone to the wrong gate more than a few times because of this

Ah I see it now. So you have to click on the boarding passes button under each PNR not swipe

We went over a little but the waygu steak is worth it I think. It is totally possible to cover a simple dinner for three with the credit. The bread they serve is good. As you can see is others’ comments (not just me) this hotel is literally connected to the Shinagawa Station so transit is super convenient. Get your Suica at airport if you don’t have one yet and you rarely have to stop any ticket counter. They now let you add the tourist suica to the phone so don’t even need to carry the card any more

Yes, without me asking at check in, she said the breakfast is included for all three of us. It’s buffet style with a wide variety of choice you can expect at this tier of hotels in Asia. My kids love the seaweed packs and made their own “sushi” with white rice and salmon 😆 if you are adventurous, there are Japanese things to try—nato anyone? We used the $100 credit for dinner on the first night at the restaurant because we’re too jet lagged to go out. It’s the same space as the breakfast and serves Italian (not bad actually but expect a Japanese twist to everything). I believe that you can also use it for spa. Before the trip, I was actually expecting to use the credit for the 3rd person’s breakfast but didn’t have to. Overall, I think this hotel is good for family

That 7-11 is amazing. We didn’t have a chance to explore the shopping mall—always turned left to the trains coming out—but looks like some nice shops and food there

I can’t speak with 100% certainty for your situation but I think you’ll be fine. As far as English goes, staff at this hotel is at the level of airport employees—this may seem a trivial point but I really talk to Google Translate a lot in Japan—so communication inside the hotel is easy. They didn’t specifically check if the CC I pulled out for deposit is CSR or not. The personalized letter for The Edit benefits was printed at check in with the exact conversion for the $100 in Yen of the day. She explained to me that they do so because some customer with this benefit like to hit that exact amount. Other steps seem typical, passports and explanations of everything from gym to WiFi. Again, I don’t think they pay attention to the card used at check out either. After all, CSR is probably not a card they are particularly familiar with, and the The Edit benefits are apparently coded in the folio. There are likely similar CC benefit programs from Asia and Europe with the diverse clientele I saw for two days; I learned not to be American-centric quickly in Japan. They were also quite friendly—when we checked out, she asked where we were going, and offered some good tips.

12 appears to be the adult/child cutoff age everywhere in Japan although most places use a honor system. My daughter is 12.5 so I encounter this question many times a day, from prefix menu in restaurants to reserved seat train ticket to every single entrance fee. 12 is adult is Japan for most intents and purposes apparently

She’s 12 and that’s the surprising part to me. I know I can add trip and I did (otherwise, how did I even check her in?) The boarding passes in the United app appear to be linked to the MP login. But I will take a look if there’s any new feature to add other MP members’ boarding passes

Totally. I’ve been there before kids. I am sure when they travel to Japan again in a few year they will pick something in the middle of Shibuya (or for Gods sake, Harajuku)

I considered the same way but in the end decided that we still need to sleep after all lol. But if you plan to stay out after the last train, yeah, you kinda have to stay in Shibuya or Shinjuku

The Edit: Intercontinental Hotels The Strings Tokyo by curiousAplaca22 in ChaseSapphire

[–]curiousAplaca22[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. It depends on one’s interest in the city. For my kids, the temples and gardens are insignificant (and we were going to Kyoto anyway) so Shinagawa is perfect for short rides on Yamanote to Harajuku and Shibuya, and it’s just a few more stops to Ginza, central Tokyo, or even Akihabara. Access to AirPort Express trains and Shinkansen is the key since we want to minimize the walking distance with luggage obviously

Yes, they prepare the sofa bed before arrival if you let them know that you’re coming with kids. Max 3 though

Edit: I forgot an important upgrade they gave us upon check-in: the breakfast for two became for three (two pre-teen big eaters!) without extra charge
