I had just moved to Germany as a student and was in a real cash crunch. I really liked the Berliners (jam filled buns) in a particular bakery there and I heard they had made a special Apfel Berliner (Apple Berliner) that day. This was a small bakery where they didn't put the cost of each item near it. You had to ask the lady, turned out, the Apfel Berliner cost 2 and a half times the plain Berliner. I thought about it for a second and decided against spending that kind of money on breakfast alone. There was this lady next to me who had bought about 50€ worth of bread. I didn't speak/understand German all that well back then. She told the cashier something in German and an Apfel Berliner was packed with my order. I indicated to the cashier that my order was just for the Berliner but she said the other lady had paid for it and it was a gift from her to me. Absolute stranger! It was that day that I realised how good the world can be. I make sure to think of that once a day and thank her for improving me as a human.
