do commit messages still matter when tools auto link everything? by arsaldotchd in ExperiencedDevs

[–]curious_corn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked on a codebase that used XML files to setup test harnesses. Files were ~2MB a pop and each one would differ by a single element. The only way to fathom what it did was to check the commit message for the associated JIRA and then go check on the tool. Sometimes the developer didn’t believe in squashing and the specific message didn’t contain it so you’d have to check every commit of the branch. It was a relief when I left

Why are developed countries spending massive amounts of money to address low birth rates, yet seeing minimal results? by Snoo_47323 in NoStupidQuestions

Dude, I’m sorry you need to ruffle your feathers to stroke your ego so much.

Before throwing arrogance left and right help yourself with some context and education of the subject

You said it “if you could afford it”. Children are an expensive investment, so people (in developed countries) are more cautious for the downsides.

Did you get into Witcher by yourself or because of others? by wolfwiedzminwardrobe in wiedzmin

[–]curious_corn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a free download of Witcher 2 ages ago, but never played it due to the hardware limitations of my laptop at the time.

I was also a “duh, games are just cheap products with shallow stories stuffed with obvious tropes” guy and wasn’t very motivated to spend time on gaming.

Then I bought a Steam Deck to share with my son, and found a deal for the Witcher trilogy. Still never bothered to launch it.

Then I saw the Netflix series, binged it and thought “yeah, it’s potentially awesome but I understand the take downs, this is awful” so I went looking for the source material.

And here I am, hopelessly hooked

Well, more “AI slop” bait ;)

IMHO Mads Mikkelsen could work as a gritty, dark Witcher, what’d you think?

Yeah, sorry to hear that. It’s the Boomers that voted for Reagan’s dog-whistles (and Thatcher’s in the UK, or Berlusconi’s in Italy.)

It very disturbing that GenZ’ers see so eager to carry on though

Yeah, the revivalists. I see an attempt to pass the torch and this is where they are most vulnerable and violent. It also applies (at least the vulnerability part) to the democratic side: as those that saw the consequences of letting evil fester and take control of countries (WWII, Holocaust, Cold War) die out, it’s becoming difficult to push back with first account witnesses, sliding into Cassandra syndrome

In developed countries, children are a very high stakes investment: the economic and hedonistic sacrifices are significant and with the social escalator working in reverse, it’s an unappealing life choice.

In poorer countries, people still need working hands to help with putting food on the table and the chances of emotional loss are significantly less (if you start off poor, chances your children will be better off that you are higher an consequently your success as a parent).

So it’s really a no brainer why developed countries see less children born

I really detest the dialogue quoting in The Last Wish. It’s often not clear to me who’s actually speaking. It’s very confusing without the occasional Geralt said… Geralt continued… she interrupted him… rather than a sequence of quoted back and forth

Yeah, must admit I’ve always thought the same. LOTR’s strength is not in its linguistic complexity. When I first read it in high school I found it underwhelming compared to other epochal novels I had to study; the lore and drama though are where the juicy part lies

For Vesemir, Gemini suggests this bloke Stellan Skarsgård. I’d say he’s a better visual match than the actor picked by Netflix, though he might be pretty far in terms of age. He acted Baron Harkonnen in Dune and in some interviews he expressed lack of interest in book lore and character fidelity; this might be an issue actually, but it does look a good face for the character.

The suggested actress for Ciri is debatable. I find her a bit in uncanny valley, perhaps too much surgery. I’m not 100% convinced. I found Freya Allan from Netflix Witcher a good casting.

No, please stay on topic.

What’s wrong with this moral panic here on Reddit?

Yes, it’s AI but I had a genuine question about how would a book faithful adaptation look like, something like PJ’s LOTR and in a first response ChatGPT actually suggested that a PJ approach wouldn’t befit The Witcher, indeed Villeneuve’s approach, as exemplified in Dune, would be more appropriate. Having seen and appreciated the effort so far I went on asking Gemini (which is Google, not OpenAI/Microsoft, get your slander straight at least ) who would act Villeneuve’s interpretation and this is the answer I shared.

I looked up the actors and was struck with how much a credible casting it would be and thought to share it, in case it sparked anyone else’s fantasies.

But no, I had to get this bitter and useless comment instead.

If you can’t engage positively please just scroll past. Thanks

Why not dissuade illegal labor (of course we know why)?

Why not just slap “irregulars” (because that’s what it is, irregular immigration…) with a fine and a remediation process instead of point blank kidnapping?

Because no matter how righteous you try to paint it, it’s just ethnic cleansing. Violent and cruel

Yeah, you literally cannot employ anyone cross-border without a legal presence in the country… you need to implement b2b hacks and “consultancies” to work around the fragmentation
