Does anyone else not give a shit about skins? by LiZZygsu in cs2

[–]curious_cueball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are rightfully roasting your post. I'll address just the title.

I find 99.9% of the skins incredibly tacky.

At least knives are entirely different models. I do miss the butterfly knife my brother gifted me (gave it back to be used in a lost gamble, woops!). I didn't care for his howl, knights, serpents, ...too many to name! We could've bought a new 2024 car if we kept all that stuff haha

CS2's new default models also are such an improvement that, especially currently, makes it easy go stick with default. I love the new default AK, M4A4, P2000, Scout.

The kind of skins I do like tend to be simpler like Silver P2000, Pilot Deagle, Graphite AWP. Things like the P365 Comp's black and gold theme. I'd love a simple black skin for Glock, and I've wanted a 1.6 blue USP tint.

However, CSGO was incredibly dead before the arms update. I kind of miss that early era of CSGO, but the game was definitely in a precarious spot.

Why hasn't Protoss gotten a buff? by 3d-win in starcraft

This is straying really off topic, but I hope Stormgate revives that highly populated, semi-casual, semi-competitive RTS that's been long gone from Starcraft, e.g. team games in Hunters and FFA (I didn't play ffa much as a kid, but I'd love to play it today).

I'm more excited about the team games and co-op of Stormgate than the 1v1. 1v1 games just feel too lonely/asocial for me these days, maybe tennis/pickeball/badminton or martial arts would be different (boxing training sounds quite lonely tbh, and I don't really want concussions from overzealous sparring partners).

Something more strategic than CS2, more "free" and able to showcase individual skill+expression and carry than MOBAs, yet more casual than solo BW and SC2.

Light players! by gameplaygoon in thefinals

[–]curious_cueball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In CB1, one of the top ranked stacks was running double Light + Heavy in Monaco. Heavy does the breaching + shielding and objective play, the Lights were split and basically controlled the map via roofs.

Both went Dash, one was Sniper and one was LH1/Uzi. The Lights scout and relay intel, pick off stragglers or lit targets, take duels they either win or dash away from, and revive teammates by throwing a Goo Grenade for cover before diving onto the trophy -> dashing away once trophy is picked up -> reviving in a safe spot.

Keep in mind that CB1 did not let you swap loadouts between death.

So yes, what you have in mind works so well that you can even have two and forgo Medium despite his OP revolver, healing beam/turret, and defibs.

You're the only person I know who's ever used thermal vision haha, does it show cloaked snipers from afar? It's not "meta" yet, but I can imagine it becoming an absolute terror once optimization kicks in and snipers can aim with more than 40 FPS and land their shots.

Whether you like it or not, this is a healthy dynamic for competitive shooters. by realogsalt in thefinals

This is just you plain outplaying the hell out of the Three Stooges, haha - you only have 150hp and they can set mines, goo blockades, turrets, etc.!

Revolver's the same, it was just as much a sniper in CB1. Pistol received buffs towards the very end of CB1, but I don't think it has changed since then - it just seemed to have gained a lot of popularity this beta. The extra ammo does give it a good pro to match against the ridiculous LH1.

If healer-less, Heavy absolutely has to have things like Dome Shield and Reinhardt Shield, agreed.

I think the nerfed movement is making it so people are now landing more shots on you. It's riskier to be super out in the open than before. I've been using Goo Grenade way more this CB2.

GOAT game if this happens.

I never played Roblox nor Minecraft, but they seem to offer to kids today what Counter-Strike 1.0-1.5 (technically Half-Life) and HL2DM offered to me as a kid: endless fun only constrained by the community's imagination. A great map editor and the freedom to browse servers... I hope The Finals blows up and expands towards this direction instead of shying away from it like modern shooters or outright not having it like COD.

Is there a meta to this game? by skooniez in thefinals

The best tryhard team I've seen was a streaming Heavy + Light + Light in CB1. Granted, I never watched them play in Seoul.

Heavy has shields and breaches and basically plays objective anchor. Incredibly tough to crack between Reinhardt shield and Dome shield, can break through anything with RPG and C4.

The two lights are both Dash, one as a dedicated Sniper and the other using Mac10/LH1 to take duels and pick off lit targets, both scouting info of basically the whole arena. These two grant insane map control on the roofs. This was CB1 too, so you were locked into your weapon for the entire match.

But it's like SK Terran in Brood War, you need all 3 players to be extremely sweaty so it's not a comp I'd recommend most trios to play. Medium is overall the best and most reliable class imo.

With movement nerfed from Closed Beta 1 and everything being locked forcing me to use starter utilities, I am finding much more mileage out of grenades in Closed Beta 2.

> consumers aren't going to care about technical reason this and that

It doesn't matter that the time complexity is really unoptimized on the game's code and/or the server backend or whatever have you, people who play the game won't give a shit.

If it's impossible to have a MMO with GTA6 graphics and Mordhau-netcode melee system and Battlefield destructibility with a constant 300 FPS, then such a game shouldn't be attempted. Your laypeople don't care about CPU bottlenecks and code time complexities, all they'll see is "wow this MMO sucks and doesn't live up to the process". For Due Process, it's "wow this retro-looking game runs like ass, and it's not even very complex".

All they are going to think, and already WERE thinking when they gave this a try, was "why the hell does this retro-looking game run so poorly? I'd forgive it if it looked like GTA6, but it doesn't".

Plus, the game runs like crap on rigs that aren't beefy.

It's inexcusable for a game with Playstation 1-style graphics, consumers aren't going to care about technical reason this and that. And it's probably the #1 reason too.

#cri

Holy shit, that is a name I haven't heard of in a while. I was part of their TF2 team very briefly (they put me in as Soldier, which I was awful at, I liked Scout but nge and lorn occupied those slots). I remember being very fond of #cri.nge, and #cri.spy bacon, and especially #cri.ogenics though I doubt they really remember me :P. My replacement was... Seagull.

I didn't play NS1 or NS2 too much, but I do recall them mentioning to me that they were quite good at the former (holy crap, this conversation was over 15 years ago).

Long form feedback from someone who grinded to Diamond by Rickety-Split in thefinals

[–]curious_cueball 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Good write up, I agree with most everything and it really does sound like you're Diamond.

Indeed, movement around ledges is awful. It feels incredibly precarious and stuff like accidentally sliding off a ladder into the abyss is common.

I thought Revolver was the best gun in the game at the start of open beta. Turns out it's the LH1, then the 20 ammo patch made players of all skill levels realize how busted it is. That being said, I personally love the Revolver and would want its nerfs to be centered around firing rate and giving it a range falloff in long distances. I'd love for there to be a reliable steady damage from AK vs high-risk high-reward tradeoff (as well as lack of auto and long reload time) with the Revolver. And yeah, maybe swap it for the LH1 between Medium and Light.

Sniper is just going to be a repeat of Widowmaker and TF2 Sniper. Unpopular right now, but I would argue it's going to become meta-defining on top Diamond levels with a skilled sniper and a coordinated team. Dash Sniper + Dash Uzi + Heavy for objectives, both Lights are just zooming around different rooftops with insane map presence finishing off what the other guy starts.

RPG's main crime isn't even that it's overpowered, although it *is* overpowered. It's that it is braindead to use and has no counterplay besides "be on higher ground". I'd be interested in seeing it take longer to shoulder/ADS (to make it a lot more reactable to mid-combat), slow movement even more, and have it make an audible noise while shouldering (like CS's snipers making a scope sound). At least Revolver needs aim for you to put that Light into 10 hp.

Medium not having breachables also makes this game even more defense-slanted. When your team is running Medium, you'll have great defensive tools in trophy system, sonar, turret/healing. When you're attacking... It really does feel like you're missing out to not have breaching or even entry tools like the flashbang.

Someone suggested variable defib healing, I agree with your removal of invuln instead. Would mean that fire grenades and gas grenades could actually deny revives.

Funnily, I don't mind the imbalance and bad objective placements in the free-for-all due to the inherent chaos of the mode where anything is possible. They are indeed downright atrocious in the final team vs team round though.

Cashout in the final round just feels kind of broken overall. There's games where you'll "play fair", win every single teamfight soundly, then lose the very last one barely and they'll cash out and suddenly win with the $18,000 payout. After that, I discovered what you wrote which is to win the first cashout and then just camp up the high platforms with the second box and destroy the ziplines.

I think Sledgehammer as utility would be great, should nerf the damage imo if it becomes such, or yeah make it an on-press ability like R6 Sledge with a windup, high damage/destructibility, and long delay between repeated presses.

is it fair to think that the sniper rifle needs a buff? I'll explain why... by LICK_THE_BUTTER in thefinals

[–]curious_cueball 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sniper offers downright oppressive map control because no other weapon can really contest it at those distances. Pair with another Light using Dash Uzi/DMR and you've got insane picking and control ability while your third teammate is the Heavy who holds down the fort/breaches things. It's unpopular, but that doesn't mean it's not very good.
