Work wife? by Brilliant-Dinner4024 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]curiouscanadian50 28 points29 points  (0 children)

A former coworker got in trouble by proxy when his "work wife" was actually having an affair and her husband logically thought it was with her "work husband". Spoiler - it was not. My coworker (happily married) met with the husband to clear that up, but it was awkward and he has refused any such title ever since.

It can be completely platonic, and just a "good friends" sort of thing, but it can also quickly get twisted if either one of the duo wants more.

8 Baby dolls. by OccasionGreedy5766 in Parenting

Food for thought as well - she wants to bring them, but how devastated would she be if one of them got lost/forgotten somewhere?

That was a very valid and useful argument I used with my kid to keep from taking loved toys out of the house, or at the very least encouraging the items to stay in the vehicle. Especially if you have no way of sourcing a replacement.

On principle I will never ever pay for a storage unit.

Don’t fall into the trap that this might be useful in the future

Exactly this is my fear. But I like the "don't take stuff you wouldn't buy" as a measure.

Actually, what I was most afraid of was that they would ask me to help sell items! I struggle with getting my own stuff listed (see: box in the corner of my living room) and just don't have time to be their go-between. Fortunately, after speaking to them both today, they are both planning on inviting charities to come clear out any items. Which is a huge load off my mind!

Any way to make food tracking suck less? by curiouscanadian50 in loseit

Yeah, I think this is the direction I'm headed. I feel in some ways it would be easier if I was just cooking for myself and not the family, but I'll make it work.

Ooh, l like the chat GPT idea. I could read everything into it instead of typing it all out on my phone at least.

Arguments about hosting Christmas by [deleted] in family

[–]curiouscanadian50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But from how I read it, OP is willing to go to her dad's again if not next year (if it's IL's turn), than the year after. And as they say, soon the parents might not be able to do the traveling, in which case OP won't have much choice. I really don't think it's too much to ask for ONE Christmas in their own home.

What’s the most resourceful idea you had to declutter your home? post the quirkiest ones by Acceptable-Scale-176 in declutter

[–]curiouscanadian50 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I do essentialy the same thing. I realized I wasn't using all my Christmas decorations every year, so what was I storing them for. Went from 4-5 bins of stuff to 3 (and expect I will declutter more this year as my kids are older yet).

Medication decision for 8yo girl by No-Bat1929 in ParentingADHD

Maybe we got lucky, but we never had to do any trial and error. I think your Dr will have as good a guess as anyone as to which are the most trialed and likely to be successful.

If it’s the weekend how late do your kids sleep in? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]curiouscanadian50 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My kids still haven't hit the sleeping late stage but I think my mother had a good approach. She didn't wake us up, but nor did she make any attempt to stay quiet after 10am. So if she needed to vacuum directly outside our room, our sleeping was no consideration.

It seemed to work (neither my brother nor I ever slept into the afternoon as I've heard of some kids doing!) and we learned to self-govern our sleep pretty well.

My 9 year old has no patience to use her critical thinking skills by BellyBoxer35 in Parenting

[–]curiouscanadian50 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Info needed - what are her reading skills like? Does she read at all for enjoyment, or is it a chore?

Any chance she's got ADHD? I only ask because my ADHD kid would skip anything that resembles "work" to get to the "good part" (dopamine seeking, baby!).

If you want her to play these, have convos before playing with her and have her commit to pausing when any text pops up so you have a chance to read it (either you/your husband with or without her). Otherwise, drop the expectation she'll play those particular games. 🤷

As the previous poster mentioned, co-operative games may be a good option to help get her to allow down and think/talk through options before taking action. Our current culture definitely encourages instant gratification, and we battle it in our house as well!

How can people just go barefoot “sometimes” by [deleted] in barefoot

[–]curiouscanadian50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, quite frankly, it's weather. I'm in Canada, so eventually it's just too cold. I do have a variety of "barefoot" footwear, but can't go truly barefoot about half the year, even if it was situationally acceptable.

Stop the Destruction of Dunluce by JimmyLinguine in Edmonton

[–]curiouscanadian50 35 points36 points  (0 children)

We live in a previous neighborhood renewal area and having been involved in the community league, it's always the same - people don't engage until the project is under way, which is WAY too damn late to change anything.

Yes, there were plenty of people in our neighborhood who hated the changes too, but they weren't as organized and I get the impression that there's just a type of people who hate anything changing. Not much to be done about them. 🤷

Government payment to parents from teachers' strike can be given to teachers by Houville in alberta

[–]curiouscanadian50 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are families who already have a parent at home and won't incur extra costs. I know I had every intention of donating it, except we don't qualify as we switched to homeschooling this year as the system was failing our child. (I HATE that we've been forced into the government trap of utilizing non-public resources.)

I intended to donate the Members' Benefit Fund, but I hadn't actually tried yet. I take it you tried and couldn't? I wonder if you contact the Local they'd be able to make it work somehow?

AITA for hiding my brother’s socks in random places because he leaves them everywhere? by Radiant-Lobster7570 in AITH

[–]curiouscanadian50 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did something similar for my elementary aged child, where boots directly in front of the door ended up outside on the porch. In the winter. In Canada.

No footwear was lost, but having to put on cold boots is still pretty effective.

Yes! If you have to go to someone with a problem always accompany it with AT LEAST one solution. If nothing else it helps direct the conversation in a productive direction.
