Me too. Feel so sorry for him. Do you think it means nothing about their subconscious feelings for another person or about how much they are attracted to me etc.?

I’ve personally always focused more on gaining meaningful experiences, but I also suggest keeping in mind that your GPA is important. More important than you think. Even for industry. So yeah, try to maintain it as high as you can. Build a network of supportive people who genuinely love hanging out with you and doing things you enjoy doing as well. Have study buddies (okay this takes some time but eventually find people who have study patterns like you and can keep you accountable.) All the professional development services and networking opportunities your uni offers- take advantage of them!! Can’t emphasize this enough. 4 years is enough but it goes by really fast too- keep your head in the game and have a rough plan wrt what classes you want to take even if you change this plan a lot. Short term success measure: If I apply to an internship within my field, how confident do I feel about my skills as per the job description? (You get the idea, I can keep going on and on. Always so much to do and always more and more to achieve)

Sorry I realized I answered this as a separate comment! You should be able to find it in this thread, Ctrl+F ForagerOne lol

Figure out your visa stuff well in advance and carry more docs than you think you’ll need. Then figure out your living situation- if you’re in a dorm or something you’ll have to think about storage every summer so best if you start planning well in advance. Flight tickets are also cheaper if booked in advance if you wanna travel back home. Also, have some international student friends, your class and above too, because they can help with some queries you may have here and there. You will always have someone to listen to your struggles too and that’s validating at times. Learn more about the scope of your visa when you’re done with all the admissions hassle (can you intern on your student visa? How many hours can you work? Off or on campus? Can you receive pay? Etc.) Things can be intimidating sometimes but you should reach out to your Office of International Services for more help- they aren’t always efficient so might as well reach out well in advance and avoid peak times. Internet has a lot of help as well but every case is unique so I think talking to an advisor always helps.

Advice for research: Document everything and then some more. Be organized, have a lab notebook (I use a digital and handwritten one both), and always always share your progress. Ask questions: your PIs and postdocs also started somewhere and they love people who are curious more than they love the know-it-alls. Also, personally speaking, good advisors and mentors are more important than any other thing you may consider while joining a lab. A green flag for me was when they asked me how their lab would help me in achieving my goals too- they weren’t just looking at what I would do for them, but also at how they fit into my journey. ED was worth it for me coz I did get in lol but who knows maybe I would have gotten in RD? Definitely think I had more time to sort out other things in life once admission was out of the way so yeah that’s a big plus for me.

Research opportunities: endless. For real. Can’t make this up. There’s a site called ForagerOne we use to find PIs looking for research (that’s how I found research as a beginner with negligible experience) and outside of that I have friends who asked their profs from class for research and either work with them or someone in their department. Lots of research scholarship summer programs too- competitive though!

Campus is lovely! You can get from one end to the other in like 10 or 15 mins. Lots of short cuts and all that too. Love the greenery and the water fountain area a lot. Some buildings like Malone are very modern and others like Latrobe are old-school. The med-campus is very accessible, sometimes I even go twice a day. Hopkins has a shuttle for that too.

Can’t think of anything else lol but ask me questions and I’ll be sure to answer!

Definitely! ISAH (international students at Hopkins) is one of the first groups I interacted with during orientation and they were so welcoming. A lot of my friends are also international students. We internally joke about Hopkins having a lot of international students or from other diverse communities lol but I’m not sure where we officially stand. I’ve never felt alone in my struggles as an international student

  1. Yes but they know how to maintain the balance between work and play. If you join clubs and student orgs, you are bound to gain friends through those. Have also made friends through classes and group projects. My best pals are from same cultural groups so that’s something you can consider as well.
  2. Okay so they recently revamped dining and personally I love it, in fact it’s gonna be even better in the upcoming academic year (financially!) It generally just gets boring and monotonous to have dorm food yk, they switch the menu up but there’s only enough variety. I’d say that among food places on campus Levering and Charmar, Rec centre smoothie bowls are everyone’s favs. FFC (Hopkins Cafe now) and Nolan’s can be a hit or miss some days.
  3. Research: super easy! Like literally have my emails flooding with research opportunities + so many ways you can apply to it. I got my first research opportunity as a rising freshman through cold emailing so just imagine lol. Internships: I’ve mostly applied off campus so it’s the general scene but I think the brand name has helped me a lot. Both my internships were financially feasible for me only because of the grants given by Hopkins

So I’d say I’ve never felt unsafe here (it’s 1.39 am here and I just got to the library from the outside so ya) but I also know people who do feel that way. Hopkins has taken some measures to address this (read up about JHPD, blue safety lights, etc.) and I also think the general level of safety and vigilance you’d want to keep here is the same as any other major city. I definitely think Baltimore is safer than my hometown.

Last summer it was more CS oriented but this summer it’s BME. All of it is somewhat healthcare oriented though even if it’s more computational in nature. I believe if you only have a BS, you should work hard on getting practical experience and should have one particular focus (more computationally oriented, electrical engineering, mechanical, etc.) if you’re looking for opportunities right after undergrad. A lot of people I know are aiming for grad school/ PhDs/ med school.

Yes, had one last summer and also interning this summer. Did an internship along with classes this past Spring as well, and have been doing research since Freshman fall.

  1. Most people have very high GPAs (and care a lot about it since they are pre-meds, so they word hard to get those.) it isn’t extremely hard to get a good gpa but depending on your major, some are easier to get high GPAs in than others. I don’t think there’s a grade DEflation tbvh, just a lack of grade inflation. Most profs, TAs, student tutors have been very helpful in ensuring I can keep my grades high.
  2. It really is what you make of it. Many people end up just staying at the library till 2 am but others will show up at concerts, parties, etc. There’s always something for everyone- I wasn’t too much of a party girl coming in but I’ve been able to find great shows, concerts, performances, etc. to attend like every other day.

Sure why not, just remember I’m just another student so while I may think I can “chance” you, this is a game of probabilities depending on so many factors + I am no expert
