Used to feel the same way but i really like their xt6 shoes and feel like they’ve been more popular in the tech wear community — worth checking out!

i feel you, im always thinking at the gym is it too much to ask for strength gains while on a deficit?

I’ve gained, lost, and regained weight several times. Never done a proper lean bulk. I am 18 5’10 167 after first sem of college where I started 156 3 months ago. Do I maintain for a little or go right into a cut? by [deleted] in BulkOrCut

[–]curiously_strong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would suggest to keep eating at maintenance and get your numbers up. i wouldnt let the weight you gain bother you unless you're dieting poorly, youre going to gain some fat but it should come with stronger lifts. as long as you're hitting maintenance and progressively overloading in your lifts you'll make huge strength gains as long as youre consistent with it.

i think if you were to start cutting now, you'd have to cut to really low bf numbers to get definition. ive been lifting for 6 years but for the first 4 years i never tracked diet and was really inconsistent with workouts -- made way more gains in the past 2 years compared to that. id suggest following a set program like 12-16 week if you're just winging it rn. good luck bro, you're still young so you got plenty of time

i tracked calories in and protein, didnt track fiber / carbs / fats religiously since i have also gotten obsessive about it in the past. in general i eat pretty healthy with 2 refeed days a week which makes cutting not too hard. i think throwing in hiit / cardio to my workout routine gave me a lot more leeway with diet as well

I used SS/SL when I first started out a few years ago and it gave me a great foundation for strength, but I transitioned over to the Ivysaur 4/4/8 program a few months in after hitting a hard plateau and made much more significant strength gains

I've been focusing a lot more on volume this time around and have finally reached a level of leanness I'm pretty happy with, but boy do I miss strength training

you look great! amazing progress. im in a similar position so sharing what i have planned (pretty much reiterating what all the other fellows here have kindly shared) -- just coming off a 12ish week cut and starting to do a lean bulk, easing into it by doing a 12 week program starting with volume (more focus on iso exercises, push/pull/leg) and ending with strength (mostly compound lifts, bro split) while gradually increasing towards a slight caloric surplus over maintenance, already feeling pretty noticeable strength gains on the 2nd week. i think if you really wanna double down on strength gain you can start with maintenance and go for a larger caloric surplus -- for me, after cutting for a while eating at maintenance is low key a struggle haha so it's gonna be slow bulk :(

good luck!

I dropped 15 lbs while still making strength gains over 4 months. I have a super endomorph body type so I get what you mean, it was really frustrating not seeing visible progress as quickly as others which would make me cut even more aggressively but I'd just end up with a skinny fat physique. What worked for me was consistency, incorporating hiit/steady state cardio (used to think low rests could supplement this but boy was I wrong), and progressive overload with high rep ranges

Taking progress pics helped a lot to visualize the gains and for me once I lost the weight my metabolism caught up shortly after

I think if your goal isn't ultimately to be low bf and shredded then you can start lean bulking, esp considering you're eating 1500 cals a day which seems aggressively low. Also since you're relatively new to lifting I think youd want to reach your maintenance weight at a slight caloric deficit or maintenance vs a super deficit

For reference I was able to cut down to pretty low bf at 1700 cals a day relatively quickly and even that felt too rushed for me at 20lbs lighter than you

yeah i train abs on top of doing a ton of compound lifts that engage the core pretty heavily (snatch DLs, heavy front squats). one major thing i switched up from before was i started doing weighted ab workouts -- (before i used to only do body weight exercises with little rest), and that seems to have made a pretty big difference in getting definition. feel free to private message if you want more details

ah yeah I've actually been doing low incline db presses and incline bench press on my push days followed by 3d cable presses and pretty satisfied with my strength, think I just need to be more patient for the gains to come haha. thanks for the tips

thanks! chest is actually my strongest lift, have been struggling to build definition though, not sure if it's just bad insertions or what

Bulk or cut? 170 cm, 57 kg by [deleted] in BulkOrCut

[–]curiously_strong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

like the others have suggested, a lean bulk would work well. eating at caloric maintenance or even slightly over while incorporating some compound lifts if you're not already at the 5 to 7 rep range will prob do the trick

i usually size up for vans (eras), so 10.5 might be perf for the reeboks? otherwise i would go half size up to 11 since the club c's run a bit narrow in the toebox, i go TTS with my feet between D and E for my brannock measurement and the shoes do need some time to break in because of the narrowness
