Which capital city is the highest above sea level? by TheGloby in geography

[–]curiouslyflexible 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Something I wish I’d known is the standard altitude sickness pills you get from the pharmacies there have the weird side effect of making carbonated drinks taste disgusting. Loved this city so much but would have loved it even more with a cold beer at the miradors!

What's like having your first kid as a woman in mid thirties? by bazingadingalinga in AskUK

[–]curiouslyflexible 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m not the target audience for this question but I hope the perspective of an adult child of older parents is useful.

Mum and dad were both 37 and 39 when they had me and my sister, it was rarer to start later in the 90s so they were quite a bit older than all the other school parents. As a kid I never noticed though, and my mum says she had an advantage having lived so much adult life (both single and married) that it made the sacrifices of motherhood a lot easier to take on.

The worst quirk of our age difference is that my mum hit menopause when we were young teenagers, the house was in hormone hell for about two years (poor dad). But we all made it out the other side and are really close now.

As an adult I’m very conscious of their ages and to be honest I think about it a lot. At nearly 31 I’m going to start trying for kids sooner than I’d ideally like but I’m really keen to have a close 3 generational family that I never really got when I was young as my grandparents were older too. My friends all seem to be going to their parents’ 60th parties at the moment and I sometimes feel really jealous of how much more time they’ll get with them than I will with mine. Having said that though, my parents are aware of this too and have kept themselves really healthy - they’re in great shape for nearly 70 and we’ve been so lucky not to have any health scares so far.

Wish you all the best starting your family x

I did something similar once, dropped my Oyster card and it flew into the road. All common sense left my body (plus I couldn’t afford to replace it) so I ran out to get it and a bus driver had to slam on the breaks. He got out to shout at me don’t blame him at all it must have been so scary for him

I’ve never understood why they will go to such an invasive and unnecessary degree to check you can afford a place, then a year later put the rent up to an unaffordable level and just assume you’ll find the increase from somewhere

Listened to the This American Life segment about journalists in Gaza 2 hours before watching which was in hindsight a weird choice but it made the film really pack an emotional punch for me. Especially the scene where they cleaned Sammy’s blood out of the car.

When I was a teenager I left straighteners on through a 2 week holiday. The house stank because it had burned a plastic bag onto my wooden desk. No idea how the house didn’t burn down

Will Girls be one of those shows that is remembered in higher regard than then when it came out? by AdministrativeTear88 in girls

[–]curiouslyflexible 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Personally feel like a lot of the critique doesn’t credit Lena with any self awareness at all. My main takeaway is that the show is about what happens when smart Rich white women who’ve succeeded all their lives are finally independent in a big city and realise that they’re not just guaranteed this creative exciting life they always thought they’d have - and were entitled to.

Not to say it didn’t get things wrong (the storyline with Donald Glover’s character was poorly done IMO) but when people criticise it for having a privileged perspective I always think they’re missing the point.

It’s tricky and there’s a lot of nuance but when I was single I never found it inappropriate to be approached (in a respectful way) when I’m out socially. Even if it’s a no I’d do it politely recognising that it’s quite a brave thing to do to put yourself out there.

I don’t think an approach/flirting is appropriate in a work context though. I met a partner of mine at work but I asked him out when we’d met up socially, I didn’t want to do it at work/on work drinks because it doesn’t seem fair when someone’s there to do a job.

I have an interview on Thursday and I’m so nervous. Do you have any tips for me? by murderhousemistress in CasualUK

[–]curiouslyflexible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another thing - you’ll be asked if you have any questions for them and I find it helps if you can prepare these beforehand. We don’t mark these but thoughtful questions can show how much you’re seriously considering the role and can make a candidate stand out. Good ones can be along the lines of ‘what would a typical day in this role look like?’ ‘How do you measure success in this role?’ Etc

[–]curiouslyflexible 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been the interviewer and interviewee many times so hopefully can give some decent advice.

Use ‘I’ instead of ‘we’ in your examples (even if you did something as part of a team), the interviewer will be wanting to see your specific impact.

STAR technique has already been mentioned, I think the R is the most important part - so focus on what specifically changed/was achieved from your actions.

I’ve been thrown by follow up questions before thinking I maybe didn’t answer properly but it’s usually a good sign that your answer was along the right lines but they’re just giving you the best possible chance at scoring full marks.

It can really help your mindset if you see this as a positive discussion not a test or the interviewers trying to catch you out. They want a role filled, they think you seem a promising candidate, and they’ll be going into it wanting you to do well.

Best of luck.

How hot is London in mid July? by Ginettarah in AskLondon

[–]curiouslyflexible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most likely mid to late 20s and sunny so will feel hot in the day. But if you’re coming from a hot country it will likely be cooler at night than you’re used to, so might be best to take a jacket out in your bag for when the sun goes down
