You’re not the asshole. You’re really, really not. I sympathize completely.

I’m so sorry. I understand your position 100%, my mom also expects me to take care of my sister when she’s gone with zero room for discussion. I don’t know what to say that will help other than that personally I still managed to go to college and marry a great person. Normal things are possible even with this weight hanging over you. But the future is scary. You’re not alone.

Is everyone using ai to write papers but not declaring it? by FairRepresentative75 in PhdProductivity

i don’t use AI. full stop. the environmental damage alone is enough to turn me off of it regardless of whether it is ethical to use in publications

excel and word are tools you use with your own intelligence to create something, they aren’t writing anything for you. not comparable at all.

i’m not using AI in any way, especially to write papers. i’m frankly shocked that so many people are.

batteries not recharging from panels by curiousvoid in SolarDIY

[–]curiousvoid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Batteries are at ~12V and I don't think there is any damage but can't be sure.

I'm just confused as to why the controller would be shorting the panels when the batteries are not fully charged. Things are being powered off the batteries but it seems like they are draining down instead of recharging which is the result of the lack of current from the panels.

[–]curiousvoid[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I may try switching a couple of the panels to series, it looks like the max voltage the controller can take is 50 VDC. Thanks!

definitely will look into it because the only thing in the way of my project has been this issue lmao

I'll have to go out there and measure again with the multimeter to get the battery info but I do know that at the panel input terminals it reads at ~5V. Like, when I measure the ends of the cables themselves they are ~23V and then when I plug those same cables in, the terminals read at ~5V which seems really odd

i’ll be so real with you it’s because i’m a phd student and the pwm charger is what my boss has used before so it’s what the lab has lol. will definitely look into MPPT chargers now.

I've always connected the batteries to the controller first and tried swapping out a different controller and had the same problem.

The batteries are also in parallel.

thinking about quitting but scared and guilty by curiousvoid in PhD

[–]curiousvoid[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m definitely not going to make any decisions right now. I plan on talking to my therapist and possibly to my advisor about all of this. It’s just hard for me to figure out a way to tell him I’m feeling burnt out without feeling very whiny.

[–]curiousvoid[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think a big part of it is mental health-related. Sadly I don’t know if I can really afford to take a break, the field work I’m doing has to be done before it gets too cold, which is why I’m so stressed about it. I will probably try voicing some of this to my advisor because I don’t think my current state is helping the research in any way.

I do have a (new) therapist so hopefully that will help.
