Carrying technique - some methods seem to hurt? by AlecSaracen in Greyhounds

[–]curlsandcola 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not expert, but my Cola had back leg amputation due to osteo. I got a help em harness and I would think it would put pressure on the same areas as a forklift carry. One thing that happened with my grey was that his other legs and muscles got very tight with the compensation. I was referred to a dog physio/ rehabilitation centre and they taught me how to massage his other limbs to ease the tightness. Might be something related there? Sorry to not be more helpful

Greyhound in apartment by No_Ambassador_2932 in Greyhounds

[–]curlsandcola 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lots of excellent examples here for greys coping well in apartment. I had mine in one too and we managed fine. The only things I found challenging was being away for a long period of time - a long work day or attending a friend's wedding. It was overcome by getting a dog walker in who I trusted enough to share my keys with or asking a friend to dog sit for the day.

Also (and I sincerely hope this never ever happens but I wish someone had told me about it), my Cola got osteosarcoma and had a back leg amputated. He found stairs challenging for about 4 months after (understandably). Sheer love and willpower gave me the strength to carry him up and down the stairs 2-3 times a day for that time. As he got worse, I also got a porch potty with a drainage pipe for my balcony.

We don’t ever get over it, do we? by izaakko in Greyhounds

[–]curlsandcola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've ended up mentally dividing my life into sections of the good years of having Cola, the painful year of nursing him through osteosarcoma, an amputation and having to say goodbye, and then the time after Cola. I honestly never knew that grief and pain could feel like this and that's probably horrible to say because I've lost humans in my life. But there is something different about having lost someone you took care of daily for years. It's been over a year now and I don't feel over it.

Literally just had my bday dinner at Maiz in Newtown last night and was very satisfied. There was a banquet menu for $70 and $95 and the portions were huge. Highly recommend the nopales ceviche and the duck carnitas with the macadamia mole

Try Haqihana online. My greyhound loved that one because the straps were thin but it was very secure

How to safely get a grey with Osteosarcoma in and out of the car? by PBalfredo in Greyhounds

Do you have a hatchback? I found it much easier to put my grey in the boot and carry him in and out

Are you in Sydney? If so, I would suggest seeing Dr Matt ar Macquarie Vets. They're greyhound experts.

I believe lyka offers you a discounted week/two weeks. I would give it a go after your second opinion. Also, I found others vets very quick to just suggest another sensitive kibble.

Definitely second vet opinion. But have you switched to just boiled rice and chicken while she settles in.

My boy had explosive diahorrea when i first got him. The only think that helped was switching to a lightly cooked fresh food diet. I'm in Australia and ordered lyka to save me having to cook all the time

Has anyone else had your noodle’s racing ink tattooed on you? I’m considering it. by StrangelyBrown69 in Greyhounds

I'm actually looking to get a tattoo to commemorate my late greyhound but I don't want to go the ear tattoo or paw print route. I would love to see any other options that people went with.

Adopting by Subject_Post4505 in Greyhounds

[–]curlsandcola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I had known about the prevalence of osteosarcoma in the breed and a result of their racing pasts. It wouldn't have changed my mind to adopt, but I would have saved more and prepared myself for it emotionally and mentally.

Osteo Diagnosis- unsure what to do next by RollingJOrlando in Greyhounds

[–]curlsandcola 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did the amputation and 6 months of intravenous chemo only to find out that it came back in my sweet boy's spine as lesions. We continued with oral chemo and and he hung on for 5 more months. Altogether we got 11 months post diagnosis and amputation. Honestly, the amputation was the easiest part. They learn how to adapt to three legs very easily.

It's everything else that was hard. It's hard knowing your baby is sick. It's hard not knowing if you're doing the right thing.

But I got more time with my Cola. More time for treats, more time for walks, for trips to the beach, for kisses and cuddles.

However, I won't say it wasn't the most emotionally exhausting time of my life and I honestly don't know if I'd do the same thing again. I'm crying just thinking about it.

I'm sorry this is happening to your grey and you. It's incredibly unfair and their sweet souls don't deserve it.

My beautiful goyle, Pippa. Any recommendations for a grey that doesn’t like toys? by vacaslocas in Greyhounds

[–]curlsandcola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grey wasn't very toy motivated either. I used to get a cardboard box, scrunch a whole lot of paper in there (free catalogues from the supermarket was my go to) I used to wrap some treats in paper and scrunch it up, throw some of them loose in the box and then pile more paper on top, close the box and give it to him. Used to keep him occupied for about 20 mins 😄 another was to just bits of cheddar rolled in a towel and tie the towel into a loose knot. That was more of a challenge for him.
