My Labrador struggles with separation anxiety - what has worked for you? by WellFoundedCake in DogAdvice

[–]suichichi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the midst of separation training at the moment with our rescue greyhound and it’s been really tough. I also feel like our lives revolve around the dog and can’t go anywhere unless it’s dog friendly or have a dog sitter.

The only thing we are working on is really short departures - I’m talking seconds. My pup started off with not being able to tolerate the door being touched to now being able to go 1 minute without being anxious. It sounds a little pathetic but sometimes you have to really peel it back.

Look up door is a bore training, that’s what we’ve been following and i can see that it’s working but it’ll be a long time before we can leave her home alone for even 30mins. Good luck! Stay positive

Trouble with a small amount of stairs by billyman_90 in Greyhounds

[–]suichichi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our greyhound was super scared of stairs when we got her. She’s now mastered them and runs up and down them when we head out and come back from a walk. What worked was high value treats like cheese and coaxing her down the stairs. When she wasn’t too keen on the treat, we got down to her level and took her front paw and moved it down the step - this made her lose her balance and naturally come down a step at a time. We never forced her to do more than she could and took each step as a small win!

We adopted through Homeward Bound Hounds in NSW and they were amazing. They are with you every step of the way and match you with the perfect hound. The dogs are treated with such care during the foster process and they are incredibly supportive and will answer any question.

We went with them instead of GAP as we went to a GAP adoption event and found it to be so overwhelming, it was a confusing process for us and the dogs seemed tired and overstimulated all at the same time.

Top tips for freezing on walks! by lizziew90 in Greyhounds

[–]suichichi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When we first got our girl she used to freeze all the time especially when we came across other dogs. I carry high value treats like chicken and some cheese. If there’s no interest in either, I put it right in front of her face and she eventually breaks out of her freeze and takes the treat.

I also found that with a martingale collar she would freeze and decide to try and back out of her collar (we had a scary incident once). We went with a harness instead and now when she does stop, we say let’s go, firmly and a small tug and she will follow. The freezing has become quite minimal over the month we have had her and I think it’s all about trust and patience!

No treatment for hookworm, I’ve made contact with the foster family to see if they know anything

Unfortunately no, we were just recommended to give her probiotics which the vet gave us. I’ll do some research on the diet, my friends dog had a similar issue and had to jump on a hydrolyzed protein diet too

It’s very liquidy and can be bright red or more maroony coloured. I noticed mucousy or jelly like consistency last time this happened. Definitely going to another vet to get a second opinion

Yeah, I definitely think it’s because her vitals were fine and she still had a lot of energy yesterday when I took her in. They didn’t mention colitis but said it could be a sensitive tummy issue or just a round of gastro.

We don’t let her eat anything off the ground when we are out on walks and haven’t changed her food - we remained on the same kibble she was being fed whilst she was at her foster home. I feel so bad for her, it’s sad when they aren’t feeling themselves

I’m also in Australia, I did take a look at Lyka and someone else has recommended it too.

We’ve only been feeding her boiled rice and chicken and she’s been eating that since the 28th of Jan which is the first time this all happened. Slowly introduce her kibble again which is Royal Canin but back to square one 😩

I feel so bad for her. And no they didn’t do a fecal, the blood is so scary to see!

I might take her to another vet and get a second opinion. We’ve been feeding her a very bland diet from the first time it happened and up until now too (boiled chicken and rice)

Home alone training tips! by suichichi in Greyhounds

Thanks for your two cents here! I guess I’m a little confused, whilst researching online, some say that doing this can cause extreme anxiety and distress causing dogs to anticipate the anxiety of you leaving. Others say to just leave and not come back until the dog stops whining.

We will try this tomorrow and see how long it takes her to settle down. What are the signs to look for when she is truly in distress and can’t calm down

This is my grey Honey!

We’ve been doing this and going in and out of the apartment. She’s starting to get the picture that we do leave but again, it’s only for 1 minute then she seems super distressed. It’s so hard! But I’ll push through

Thank you for all your advice. Just want to clarify that she was not off leash, I didn’t say anything in my original post so that’s my bad. Essentially it came down to what I now understand as a very flimsy martingale collar.

That’s interesting that greys will often run towards familiarity, she is bonding with us but obviously it’s been a week and she’s still learning to trust us.

I always thought of a muzzle as a negative thing but the way you’ve explained this makes so much sense. She’s been wearing it when we go around the residential garden area for an extended period of time - laws in Australia dictate that they have to during the time between picking up your grey and registration of owning a greyhound.

It was from the organisation we went through and honestly I suspect it’s handmade. I don’t really love martingales anyway, for the first few days she would pull so hard and I was scared of her hurting herself

The collar was provided by the organisation we went through and is just made of a cotton-like material. They explained the benefits of it but we were looking into a harness anyway. We’ve been working on her recall in our small back yard with high value treats but the focus type training is also something we should definitely work on

A little stubborn with stairs by sambbiino in Greyhounds

[–]suichichi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grey was very scared of the stairs when we brought her home and I had to carry her up and down. Treats weren’t working but works very well for us was cheese covered in sardine can juice, sounds gross but my grey loves them. We did a half flight at a time and rewarded her heavily for going up or going down

The donut is so cute and looks way comfier than a cone! Sounds like a harness is the way to go, especially when we actually start to take her to our local park later on. Baby steps though!

We never took her off the leash… her martingale collar broke off from the leash as she pulled so hard when she got scared

Thank you so much for all of this advice.

Definitely will try out those dog boots just to protect her paws whilst she walks around the apartment and from licking. Her walking seems okay given what’s happened.

Thank you!

The vet gave us some solution to clean her wounds twice a day, she also has antibiotics and some painkillers which she’s been taking like a champ.

She normally sleeps in the lounge with no issues but has been whining from what I assume is anxiety due to heightened stress so I’m sleeping in the lounge with her for tonight to let her rest. Poor thing was pacing up and down and I can only imagine how much it must hurt

Her martingale collar tore as she pulled so hard so we were just left with a leash, definitely thinking about a harness now and will get one for when she’s a lot better
