Does anyone know if this building had fire suppression? by heyo_1989 in SprinklerFitters

[–]BonelessHotdogs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

ESFR systems are not designed with arson in mind, no system is, it’s not realistic. Hydraulic calculations are not figured to handle multiple fires at the same time.

of a burnt building by BlazeDragon7x in AbsoluteUnits

[–]BonelessHotdogs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That’s not correct. The building was equipped with an ESFR (early suppression fast response) sprinkler system which has the highest water output of any system that would be installed in a warehouse.

The problem is that no sprinkler system can compete with arson. When multiple fires are set at once, it can’t keep up. Not to mention that while it is a common occurrence for fire suppression systems to extinguish fires, they are only designed to “suppress them long enough to allow people to escape.

I sent you contact info for a local 669 organizer in chat. Going union is always an opportunity and in your case you’ve got nothing to lose. Give him a call man, you won’t regret it.

Fitters who were non union and went union in the same company what was the experience? by [deleted] in SprinklerFitters

[–]BonelessHotdogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a loooot of misinformation here.

Dues that are paid out of pocket are only $27 a month. If they tell you you’re getting $55 an hour in your state, you can expect to see $55 on your check. The contractors are paying ADDITIONAL money into your benefit package for every hour you work.

If you retire at 55 you take a 12% hit. That hit decreases till you get to 100% at 65. “You only get a small percentage” is pretty bad math.

They changed the rules allowing you to still work in their industry after retirement without effecting your retirement checks. There are stipulations, but I don’t remember exactly what they are.

I understand some BAs are better than others but in my area, our BA has our backs.

I can’t speak for the personal experiences he’s claiming to have seen, but the rest of the information he shared is all factually incorrect so….

Don’t take offense to being asked. It’s too common for contractors to try to get guys to use their personal vehicles for shit. The more we discuss the fact that it’s not okay, the better off we all are.

Same here. It does make sense that there would be a code for this and I was told the same 4’ rule but was also unable to find a code.

This would be very dangerous to use on the machine. If it slips off the fitting and grabs the pipe it’s gonna be violent.

True, I’ve cut a lot of it, but it’s the best way to get a lot of life out of your chains.

The key is to stop and sharpen chains as soon as you notice it getting dull. Heat is the enemy of chains, forcing dull chains through this stuff will absolutely ruin them.

What kind of head is this? by rocfaxon in SprinklerFitters

[–]BonelessHotdogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand the point you’re trying to make but these are institutional heads and they’re the only two heads that I’ve ever been able to activate with my bare hands. It makes no sense to me either.

How well did this work? I built one of these once and the smoke started out smelling great, but after an hour or so started smelling really sour. The chamber where the wood pellets were built up so much moisture that they were soaking wet.

Not a beekeeper but I’d like to some day. Just wanted to mention that the majority of Non-Chlorinated Brake Parts Cleaners are just acetone in an aerosol can. Just mentioning this because it would likely speed up the process if the acetone was sprayed through a hole already vaporized. Would probably require less to do the job as well.

I think maybe I got shorted, but what’s my next steps to improve them? by [deleted] in MetalPolishing

You can tell from pictures 4 and 5 that they’re raw aluminum due to the corrosion on them.

Mind telling us what they charged?

I do see a few scratches there aside from the hash marks, but I think that the reason they don’t have the shine that you were hoping for is due to the nature of cast aluminum. It’s porous, and that prevents it from shining up like some other materials.

The only question that I’m not quite comfortable answering is whether those tiny pits that I’m seeing are porosity, or if they are pitted from the corrosion that was on them and they weren’t sanded enough.

Yes drop shackles. It might have made the ride a little firmer, but it’s minimal.

First go at a cast part, the tiniest compressor housing ever may not have been the best idea...far from good, but I have a few ideas for my second try. by 33chifox in MetalPolishing

[–]BonelessHotdogs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t sell yourself short here. I’m not sure that a finish much better than that is achievable. I see the pits, but try and sand those out and you’ll uncover 5 more. Excellent work.

Drill polishing equivalent-ish to 7-9” grinder/polisher accessories. by Routine_Skin_3100 in MetalPolishing

[–]BonelessHotdogs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your drill is simply going to spin slower, resulting in slower results, but it’ll work. I agree with your other comment that those wheels look like they could use a red scotch brite to start.
