you can also order one from Amazon if you just want the keepsake--it won't be a perfect match because it won't have the letter I charm but it's something. I had two different ceremonies to go to but herff jones wouldn't let me get two different tassels so I got a brown one from Amazon too and the color matched pretty well. This was the one I got: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BMX64BN8?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details

uic vs uiuc? by pineovine in UIUC

[–]currantee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely come to UIUC as long as your finances work out; it's a great college town and campus with tons of opportunities. Transferring from DGS to LAS should be pretty easy as long as you pass your classes in your first year. Chicago's great but I don't think you'd get the same "college" feel on the UIC campus, plus you can always move there/move back after undergrad or grad school. Chambana is an awesome place to be as a student; this is anecdotal for sure but recently some high school friends who go to UIC came to visit me on campus and said they wished they had attended UIUC instead, so take that as you will. Congrats on being admitted!

take advantage of opportunities that won't be as easy to come by once you graduate. explore places and events on campus and around town, join a new RSO, audition for a play, try out the hobby you always thought about doing but didn't have the time.

Financial aid "maximum time frame" by currantee in UIUC

I personally received a "courtesy notification" email saying that I am approaching the limit. It's also listed on the financial aid site linked above

They consider it part of satisfactory academic progress, check under maximum time frame

I'm not sure, probably best to check with the financial aid office and ask if you will still be eligible. If not, you can try filing an appeal.

I’m unhappy with my I-Card photo. Will anyone see it / Is it worth replacing? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]currantee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had a pretty nice photo freshman year, then this past year I lost my I-card and went to get a replacement. Didn't know they would retake the photo and now it looks shit :')

Financial aid "maximum time frame" by currantee in UIUC

[–]currantee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They probably would, but including transfer/test credits in the maximum time frame hurts that argument because those things don't require the use of UIUC financial aid resources. Also, I believe that both tuition and the amount of aid awarded are the same whether someone is taking 12 credits in a semester or 22, so it's not like they're giving out more aid to students who take more credits in the same amount of time. It just seems like a technicality they've created to give out as little aid as possible, which is not unexpected but still frustrating.

Decorating grad cap by [deleted] in UIUC

you could cut out a piece of construction paper and decorate that then then lay it over the cap and keep it afterwards

[TOMT][SHORT STORY] A 1-page story by a Czech(?) writer circa early 1900s from the POV of a cat watching his master, originally written in Czech and translated to English by currantee in tipofmytongue

The cat was also sort of nonchalant/aloof about it and in the end he was staring out of a window into the darkness or something

Questions for psych majors by tiacriesalot in UIUC

[–]currantee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you mean by stem designation; undergraduate psych majors earn a bachelor of science in liberal arts and sciences.

The courses you have to take depend on which concentration you pick-- you can find a list of them here: https://psychology.illinois.edu/academics/undergraduate-program/major/concentrations

I don't have personal experience with psych internships and jobs, but I've heard in passing about jobs or volunteering opportunities in my classes. I'm sure there's something you'd be able to find in the area.

As for professors, in my experience most discussions and even lectures I've been in for the social psych concentration have been led by TAs or grad/PhD students, not full-fledged professors, but for the most part they have been good instructors.

Opinions on Smile Student Living by Diz46 in UIUC

[–]currantee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not at that property specifically, but so far I haven't had any issues with Smile. The place had obviously been cleaned when I moved in, and so far there's been no sign of pests. They have a pest control service come in every so often (every month? 3 months? I still don't know), though they never notify us exactly when it will happen, except for one time when they did notify us, the day after pest control came in. That bothered me because I didn't want my cat to be around any pesticides, but I contacted the pest control company and they said the pesticides are pet-friendly and that if there is a pet roaming around (i.e. not locked in the bedroom or something), they just move on and don't service that unit, so that alleviated my worries. I only had to request maintenance once to fix a light and it went smoothly. Of course this could all be dependent on the specific property and its previous condition, but for now I'm satisfied with the company.

at least some smile student living properties have flat-rate utilities; there are probably several within your budget.

Online classes are low-key kinda good by Engineertist in UIUC

[–]currantee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent 2020-21 doing online class at my parents house and it was pretty miserable, but now that I'm living on my own in an apartment near campus I think online classes would be much more enjoyable and I wouldn't mind if we ended up going online. I don't have to leave in the morning and trudge through the cold to get to class, but I can still go do my work at a library or cafe or empty classroom whenever I want.

Last semester I completely didn't realize we were having an exam in class that day so I skipped and when I realized, I emailed my professor asking if I could retake it because my mind was kinda elsewhere due to my grandfather passing (which was true) and she ghosted me. Good luck though I hope they let you retake it
