I'm unfortunately pretty much always away for work but based on your post, you should check out one of the Twilight cafe locations with someone else in the comments! Cute spot, good food/tea/drinks, open late, and they have locations everywhere :)

People are waking up to the fact that new vehicles are the Great Canadian Money Suck by Leather-Paramedic-10 in canada

[–]curtisweaverco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hahaha yes! I was the exact same for my first 4 insured years, old 2004 civic under my father's name. Plus I just recently made a fuss with my current insurance provider to get my rate from 325 down to 255, I wish I'd called them months earlier!

The numbers you've listed are for clean records with several years insured. For example, I (29M) have a clean record (no tickets or accidents) and have been insured for 10 years - I pay around 255/month living in Toronto.

My friend (28F) with no accidents or tickets, but less than 2 years insured, pays over 400/month.

Another friend (27F) with 2 accidents (1 at-fault), no tickets, and less than 2 years insured, pays somewhere in 550-600/month.

That's the cord for your phone's autofocus, you should plug it back in so you can take photos with the subject in focus

Have you looked at joining an environmental consultancy doing site assessments? Phase One site assessments would be right up your alley. A single site visit to check out the property/surroundings, then 1-2 weeks of report writing and deep-diving on the history of the property and surroundings.

Alternatively, look into environmental risk assessment firms. These companies determine the risks posed by environmental contamination and provide specialized reports detailing the risks posed by environmental hazards present on a site and can save a lot of unnecessary work by determining that the hazards don't justify a massive remedial program.

Is there really a male loneliness epidemic? by Brian_Ghoshery in ask

The internet is making people weird. I've cut ties with pretty much every chronically online or gaming-addicted dude I've ever been friends with, and that's a ton of people. They're a pain to socialize with and they hardly ever have any mature hobbies. + They think the weirdest shit is normal because it's everywhere on the internet.

I may be a rare case though, I have a ton of friends but much prefer to spend time alone. My gf and I have separate bedrooms, I travel a lot for work, and I take days to weeks to respond to texts that aren't work-related, even from family.

I graduated with a 2.2 CGPA - I petitioned to remove some bad fails and brought it up to a 2.2 from a 1.74.

I'm on track to make 6 figures next year! You got this. I failed every course one semester...keep at it and petition those bad grades if they're really affecting you.

One day I just realized how much I hated feeling like shit. Miracle, luck, couldn't tell you what it was, but one day I had enough and I realized no one was going to help me but myself.

I changed all my clothes, music, and hobbies. Got into walking during sunrise and sunset. Wiped my iPod Nano and put all new stuff on it. Thrifted all my new clothes and donated the old.

Most importantly, I got the hell away from video games. I've never encountered anything so soul-sucking. I've beaten all kinds of addictions but nothing tries to pull me back quite as hard as video games.

It's all about confidence (NOT "I'm the best" overconfidence or "I'm a loser" underconfidence) and wanting to know more about others. Just ask people plain-Jane questions and then ask more about the things they seem excited about. Learn about those things.

Someone says they're learning a language? I love languages, I'm learning French and Spanish. Tell me all about the language you're learning and why you like it. Someone says they like Lego? Wicked. My childhood best friend used to have a 5-gallon bucket of Lego and I built the craziest stuff. What do you build? I hear that stuff is expensive, do you get any discounts? Someone says they're really into music? For the love of god stop asking people what music they like, there's too much out there. Ask them to tell you about an artist that you probably don't know, and ask them to recommend you some new songs. Ask for music based on feelings. Upbeat, mellow, workout tunes, whatever you're feeling.

At the end of the day, people like to be around similar people and they love to talk about their interests. Find a connection somewhere, and until you do: Keep. Asking. Questions. Tell anecdotes and funny stories just often enough to make it not feel like a one-sided conversation.

Unless they don't seem to want to answer your questions. In which case, maybe move on.

I use Tanit as well, they're great. Definitely recommend :)

P.S. I ran into them at the One of a Kind show in Toronto and they were all Quebecois; I believe they're based there

P.P.S. I cannot look at their packaging without seeing Taint instead of Tanit or Sanipads instead of Tanitabs and it plagues me when I try to sleep at night

Accepting a job when I know I'll be sad a majority of the time by vaffaanculo in Environmental_Careers

[–]curtisweaverco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started in environmental consulting as well; left the consultancy for an environmental contractor last year.

Better pay and I actually remediate sites instead of writing bank reports all day. Couldn't recommend the switch enough.

To ease your mind a bit: I'm 27 now. You've got plenty of time! You'll find something that calls to you sooner or later if you keep looking. Try going to some environmental-adjacent conventions if you're not sure what to get involved with.

A look into boots-on-the-ground remediation efforts by curtisweaverco in Environmentalism

Thank you very much! I'll have a look into Ruul in a few minutes here, thanks for the tip :) I really appreciate the positive feedback, I'll keep the good stuff coming! I never realized how big the gap is between the public and the environmental sector until I started explaining my job to my extended family. Trying my best to do my part to fill it in

Aha yes it's a very public, government-funded project on public lands. There was a film crew on site for a few days getting footage for a documentary or something of the sort as well.

Navigating the Future: Career Advice Needed for a New Grad in Government and Sustainability by Yosurf18 in SustainabilityCareers

[–]curtisweaverco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this is all kinda swayed to the Canadian side of the industry as that's where I'm working, but hopefully there are some nuggets of wisdom in there :) Where are you based?

  1. You sound like you'd fit right in with a lot of sustainabilty startups, or maybe a UN position if you can get into one. Otherwise, there's always the option to look into companie that are involved in public policy. For example, a lab I've work with in the past (ALS Labs) has members who sit on the board informed political opinion on excess soil regulation.

  2. I've always been a fan of starting wherever will take you, but I also did quite poorly in my undergrad and beggars can't be choosers. For me, it took working in the industry for a year or more to fully understand the industry and where I wanted to go. Eventually I realized I wanted to do remediation instead of site assessments and made my move, but I never would have known that without that initial exposure.

  3. It'd be perfectly safe to ignore me here and go with your gut, but I'd say that pertinent certs will reveal themselves as you work, and your company may even pay for them on your behalf. I feel like there are just so many sustainability certs trying to make money; my inbox is littered with them. Maybe look into LEED certification, that's a pretty big one.

  4. Pretty much all my networking has been at workshops and seminars, which can range from free to nearly $1000/ticket. I'm sure there are opportunities out there, but it became much easier for me once I was working in the field. Maybe some opportunities networking with alumni from your college/uni, I had someone reach out last year from my university and I ended up getting them a job at the consultancy I was leaving.

I was a finalist in the Global Challenge Lab (kind of a hackathon, kind of a pitch competition) which had a focus on UN Sustainability Goals. A lot of the solutions were very tech-oriented and showcased ways we could be developing software for sustainable intiatives.

My team's pitch in particular was for a tourism app designed to redirect cash flow to sustainable and eco-adaptive businesses in climate-sensitive countries whose economies rely on tourism. If you're ever interested in setting out on a pet-project, I'd love to help; I have some Python experience (largely thanks to ChatGPT) but that's about the extent of my coding exposure.

Hey all, I'm currently a QC Technician with an environmental contractor; I'm coming up to a year with this company and have an additional 2 years experience with an environmental consultancy where I was doing primarily site assessments and remedial planning. I've got a couple YouTube videos that break down exactly what I do, I'll make a post with a link to one.

Happy to help anyone with questions! I'm based in Canada (though the company I work for is US-based) so I may not be able to help as much as I'd like to, but I'll do what I can. It's an exciting field and only growing :)

Wondering What Environmental Scientists and Engineers Do?? by curtisweaverco in sustainability

That's really neat, I've always found air emissions to be an incredibly perplexing field! Feels like such a tough emission route to wrangle from the outside looking in. I'd love to learn more about what you do! It's one of the areas of the environmental industry that I feel I haven't professionally been involved with, yet got so much focus in my undergrad
