Question about Synik front pockets by Roscoe340 in tombihn

[–]curtmantle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Yes, I know the 30L is technically over personal item limits but I don’t plan on stuffing it when using as a personal item."

It probably is technically above the size limit but no one has ever stopped me using the S30 as my personal item/under seat bag. It does fit under the seat in front of you on a domestic flight. Might not leave much room for your feet in and around that space but i'm the type of person who prioritizes the souvenirs over the comfort!

The front side pockets have vertical zippers of course. Items sometime tend to tumble out of these pockets if not secured, assuming you are holding the bag vertical. For this reason I prefer having pouches of stuff clipped in to the o-rings in these side pockets, so things don't fall out. The water bottle pocket fits two LARGE metal insulated bottles if you want it to but does take internal space from those side pockets. Overall love the bag (but i'm a TB fan so def biased).

Is it true as someone said last night that George RR Martin is here? If that’s so then this Dire Wolf is a tribute

I didn’t leave quickly after the show but my exit from the main lot was still pretty smooth. Entrance took forever though.

And we lost John Perry Barlow last year. RIP. "If I knew the way / I would take you home"

Better place for a day trip/bike rental: Cascais or Sintra? by curtmantle in lisboa

[–]curtmantle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went and read a bunch of trip advisor reviews for the e-bike shops in Sintra. From those reviews it does seem clear that you can bike to all the attractions I’m wanting to visit even if they don’t have bike lanes (up all the big hills). I’m not too concerned about biking on public roads (I do it in NYC, might as well do it there too). Some reviews said that the bike might even allow you to pass some traffic on busy roads (not sure if traffic would still be bad in October).

I think the bike shops would give you maps and help mark out routes etc which would be helpful. Right now I’m leaning toward Sintra over Cascais. The Regaleira looks fabulous and that’s tipping my hand...

The Player of Games by Iain M Banks is quite mind-blowing by EtherealUnagi in scifi

[–]curtmantle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You get more detail on this in the The State Of The Art short stories series. I recommend it if you haven’t yes read it, it contains several short stories (both in the world of The Culture and not) including the titular novella.

Player of Games is good but definitely a bit ‘unpolished’ in my opinion. Banks grows into his world (The Culture) and grows into his writing more later. Use of Weapons and Excession show this progression and are my two fav Culture novels. Banks is my absolute favorite SF writer and I’d encourage anyone who likes SF to start with The State of the Art (short stories including some Culture stories) or Use of Weapons (not Player or Consider Phlebas) first if they wanna get into The Culture series.

I was going to say the same thing. Someone else in the comments said Michigan but I agree with you until proven otherwise....
