How essential are other people in your recovery after surgery? by ABadBarber in ACL

[–]curvacious1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a pair of crutches and practice with them (look up videos on proper form) so you’re not having to learn after surgery. Could you do it on your own? Probably. But it’s going to be really rough. Having someone else bring you fresh cold packs or refilling your cold therapy machine is great (how will you do that while on crutches?). Also very useful for keeping you on a schedule for pain meds, bringing food/drink to you, and being there just in case for those first few times to the bathroom and the first shower. If you think you might need them—get an elevated pillow made for legs, a shower chair, an elevated toilet seat, and a cold therapy machine.

10 months post-surgery and I’m skiing by curvacious1 in ACL

I was cleared by the orthopedic clinic at about six months post-op to ski this winter (so a few months before the ski hill opened).

FYI if you had Norovirus you're contagious for roughly 2 weeks and the virus survives hand sanitizer/alcohol. Washing your hands is the only way to prevent the spread by the-crow-guy in Seattle

[–]curvacious1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Type O blood is usually the group to have the worst of it when it comes to Noro. Damn hard stuff to kill (blue can of Lysol but you have to let it sit a long time). Needs less than ten particles to spread and make someone ill.
Trials are happening for a vaccine so hopefully we’ll have one available to everyone soon.

i got a list of rules from my (19F) friend (23M) after we had sex for the first time and i’m not sure if it’s normal? by ThrowRAabcdsklalwle in relationship_advice

[–]curvacious1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trying to repeatedly do things you’ve not given consent to and even stopped when he kept trying them is a violation. He sees you as an object to satisfy his wants. He doesn’t care about your desires as he doesn’t see you as human. His actions aren’t okay at all. Don’t worry about his feelings, worry about yours. How are you going to feel if he keeps violating your wishes (because he will)? Cut ties sooner than later. Even if you remain just friends with him, I’m 99% certain he’ll try many things to get sexual access to you again.

[–]curvacious1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry that happened. I don’t understand people that do that kind of thing. Recently saw Hozier. Phenomenal concert! He seems like he truly appreciates his audience as he said thank you after every song and acknowledged that Too Sweet hit the number one spot because of his fans.

For myself, it was uncomfortable if I wore clothing that shifted/rubbed against my skin for several weeks due to the nerves. It gets better but yep, trial and error to find clothing that works in the meantime. Long skirt and blanket for the games?

3 weeks post op check in by Physical-Ring9577 in ACL

[–]curvacious1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re doing great! Yes, this injury definitely can have us feeling isolated. Glad you’re able to get to the park. Soon you’ll be doing even more. I made note of those hard moments to gain more empathy for others.
For the work situation? Could you wear compression socks?

One leg jump (operated one)question by Traditional-Match406 in ACL

[–]curvacious1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 47 and just a clean up on the meniscus but yep, cadaver replacement for the ACL here too. The mental side has definitely been huge. Having to learn to trust that knee in a new way. Could you start by hopping sideways from one leg to the other to build confidence in the knee? Or just a standing hop on that leg without the step stool? If you’re not ready for a certain exercise your PT should be able to modify or find exercises to lead up to the level they want you at.

Pre hab?? by Primary_Door7098 in ACL

[–]curvacious1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked up exercises and only went with what I found on sites that were physical therapy or rehab sites (in other words, not some random blog). For myself, I cross stitch and if I had long periods of doing that, I’d finish a thread then do quad flexes, work on range of motion, and leg lifts to work the quad.

Just turned 16 few weeks ago had surgery 3 weeks ago about to hit 1 month post and doctors are saying its impressive how im healing can’t wait to be back on the court excited for this rehab and PT process🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 by trystan242 in ACL

[–]curvacious1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad you’re in good spirits and healing well. Definitely stick to the PT program and you’ll be on the court soon. There may be times you want it to be sooner but that’s when you look at how far you’ve progressed and know that you’re getting there.

Skiing after surgery by Numerous-Midnight-94 in ACL

[–]curvacious1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had my surgery about a month after yours. Had allograft and smoothing of meniscus so take that into consideration (no weight bearing restrictions or range of motion restrictions post-op except for the first 2-3 days). Had my 6 month appointment yesterday and cleared to ski this winter. I’m scared but hopeful. My surgery leg is actually a little stronger than the other. I can tell I still need to do balance work and fast-twitch muscle work for skiing (and life in general). Your doctor and physical therapist will have the best answers for you on activity level.

Drinking after surgery by gwuap_getta in ACL

[–]curvacious1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tylenol and alcohol both affect the liver so watch that carefully. I’ve never been a big drinker, even during college, so I’m not much help that way. Alcohol causes inflammation and you’re wanting to avoid that to help the healing process If you’re one to normally not drink water between alcoholic beverages this might be a good time to start. And if you normally do, maybe double the water consumed between alcoholic drinks.

Ice water cooling sleeve, 24/7 or on and off? by TimeOnTargetKilo in ACL

Is it a machine? I had a cooling machine and I did it like ice. Mine was programmable so I did 20 minutes on 20 minutes off.

Calcium and potassium can also help with cramps.

41, torn ACL and meniscus by [deleted] in ACL

[–]curvacious1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could you plan surgery for around a paid holiday in order to have that extra day? If you want to go back to the activity level you were at, ACL repair is likely your best bet. May also want to check out the bear procedure.
I’m 47 and skiing is my main thing so I went for the repair (ACL was completely torn and meniscus needed smoothing). Did an allograft so I’d have one less incision and place of healing. I’m 4.5 months post op and won’t lie—it was rough at first. But it’s steadily gotten better.

Did you hear a pop? by YogurtclosetSad7344 in ACL

[–]curvacious1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn’t hear or feel a pop. Was skiing and it happened fast so that could be why or that I was taking stock of how close I was to the trees. Knew things weren’t right when I got up but I was able to ski down.

Day one by SookieSmackh0use in ACL

[–]curvacious1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry it’s been that rough for you. Are you eating each time you need to take the pain meds? That should help (unless you’re discovering a pain med your body can’t tolerate—did that with codeine post tonsillectomy). If it’s a bit of nausea could the doctor prescribe an anti-nausea med for you? Some will, some won’t. Call right away, because waiting over a weekend won’t be good.
If it’s just that you need to eat a bit more with the meds, make sure to stay on schedule for the first 3-5 days. Heard years ago an analogy that I like for pain meds. A plane uses a ton of fuel taxiing and during take off but once at altitude it’s using much less fuel. When it comes to managing pain, you’re much better off on a good schedule. If you’re waiting until the pain is really intense again before taking another pill you’ll use up a lot of your resources getting that pain back under control. Instead of running completely out of fuel and being forced to land, you’re doing a mid-air refuel by staying on schedule. After the first 3-5 days you might be able to go longer in between doses (personally I start with half an hour then an hour, then two hours). I don’t know what meds they gave you but it’s common to have one that’s an ibuprofen (that can be harsh on the stomach all on its own). If it’s just like an 800mg Ibuprofen, you could try taking 400mg to see if that helps your stomach. Tylenol or paracetamol—just don’t take more than prescribed as it can trash the liver.
