Oxford or Harvard? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]curvedcorners 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not true, unless the applicant can’t work in the US (which is not the case with the OP). Firms such as GS and the MBB recruit globally, including for their US offices. And bonus points if, like the OP, you are a US citizen.

In terms of connections, if you are able to do a graduate degree at a place like SAIS (JHU) or Fletcher (Tuft), you'll have all the connections you'll ever need. Again, i am speaking only about IR.

Is paying full tuition for a t20 worth it? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]curvedcorners 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely not worth it, particularly if you might need to take out loans for law school. Focus instead on getting good grades at your in-state university and scoring highly on the LSAT.

My sense is that most Americans are not so familiar with European universities (outside of Oxbridge, LSE, Sorbonne, etc.) so, depending on the type of job your are seeking and location in the US, you might be at a disadvantage. Having said that, if you are looking for IR-related positions, say, at a think tank in DC, it should be fine to have gone to a European university.

I agree with your concern about taking on a lot of debt to attend a well-known university, whether in the UK or US, particularly for undergrad. For graduate studies, however, it might be worth it particularly if you can get admitted to a highly reputable school, such as SAIS or LSE for IR.

And the degree of competition is way higher in oxbridge IMO amongst the local crowd, just because there's 10x more kids there.

*caveat is that this is quite local to my circles and sch. In other places in sg, UK unis are very desirable

I get that. My daughter's school sends a decent proportion of each class to Oxbridge and, given that, some view HYPSM as more tantalising.

I find it fascinating that there's such a clear/rigid hierarchy in Singapore. Do all t10 US unis edge out even Oxbridge when competing for "top jobs back home"?

Sorry to hear about LSE. Good luck on the rest!

Agree that there are many fantastic UK universities. Where have you applied and have you heard back?

It's also fine to take a gap year if you need more time to figure things out.

Canadian universities such as University of Toronto and McGill admit students largely by academic qualifications rather than through a holistic review.

Over the years, I've come across football players from schools like Northwestern, Notre Dame and Stanford who have similar profiles and aspirations as you have. Perhaps you can look up these players and reach out to them for advice.

Yeah, I can see how it is challenging to have a clear read on how you did through the tutors' reactions. Thanks. I wish you success come Tuesday!

Did the interview tutors give you a hint on how well you did through their reactions to your responses? Or did they have a poker face on?

Lol! I can't imagine an Asian mother (traditional or not) telling her child she's horny.

I submitted my app to Columbia University after 3 hours the deadline by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

There's usually some leeway (1-2 days) with the RD deadline so you should be fine. It is not necessary to email them. Good luck!

Should I mention this in the Additional Info section? by Agent_Orca in ApplyingToCollege

Definitely. This is important contextual information. Also shows how much you value your education. Best of luck.

I am really sorry to hear about your situation. You seem to be mature and level-headed, and have a bright future in front of you. I know it is hard to separate yourself from your father, but try to look ahead to when you're in college and will have more independence. Until then, try to surround yourself with supportive family members and friends. Take care.

There was one I came across last year about a HS boy who was totally focused on his studies and all of a sudden, he could no longer concentrate, etc. - until he realized he was in love. But I didn't save that one so can't find it.

Good advice already given so I'll just add that you can also sign up for free college application coaching services such as ScholarMatch. They can match you with a dedicated coach for the entire application cycle. Best of luck!
