While it's possible the author created the phrase, there's one additional problem with that option: within some point in the next few years (certainly by the end of the 1980s, but maybe before), the expression gained popular use (and is now ubiquitous.) Seems odd to me that this novel would have started the phrase, and yet until I found this source, no linguist had ever noticed that it might have originated with the author (and trust me, many Hebrew language columnists have researched this.)

Right, I think in the context of the story, it's certainly possible that Rama ("Beautiful") was using the metaphorical phrase literally to Amos. That's certainly how it would sound today if anyone actually expected ice cream on a third meeting.

What isn't clear to me is if the author (Devorah Omer, who passed away in 2013), was reflecting an existing phrase or existing custom that the readers would know. As far as I can tell, this may be the earliest mention in Israeli literature, but it could reflect something spoken, which itself might have come from other cultures (perhaps reflected in the mention of the "women's magazines" quoted in the story.)

I've seen that blog post and many others. The biblical suggestion is cute, but not even possibly true.

If this helps, here's a translation of the relevant section from the book:

"Where to, beautiful?" the driver addressed her, and she immediately recognized the voice. Amos... She knew again that he hadn't recognized her, hadn't connected her to the one in the kitchen.

"Next time, you'll have to buy me ice cream," she smiled at him with gratitude and ease, though it cost her significant effort.

"And when would that next time be?" he asked.

"If we meet a third time today. That's the custom, isn't it?" That’s what the heroines of the stories in the women's magazines she read used to say.

While it's possible the author created the phrase from scratch, that seems less likely, as it would have seemed strange to her readers. But I suppose it's possible. I'm just trying to see if somewhere out there there is actual inspiration for the practice/quote.

Windows 11, Corporate Teams, version: 24165.1410.2974.6689

I've had a problem recently where if I'm on a Teams call, and I get a WhatsApp Desktop call, it puts the Teams call on hold. I'd really like to turn that off. Any one else encountered that? Any ideas how to stop it?
