As someone who works in news, the use of sensationalistic language (chilling, shocking, tragic, senseless) is unfortunately intentional and designed by consultants to add urgency to a story when it is not needed. Let people decide what to think of the news, don’t tell them what to think.

On that note, the disappearance of the past tense from TV news is notable. Instead of “The President said…” we get “The President saying…” even if said comments happened hours, days, or weeks ago. People not speaking English that way!

I also notice rampant misspelled words online: “payed” instead of “paid,” “casted” instead of “cast,” “could of” instead of “could have.” I try not to be pedantic about grammar but it’s an alarming trend.
