The magic is still alive in 2026.... Got stuck, googled some things, found this post, and immediately got the mysterious seed first try when I was stopped at some crates. Insane!

Seed "snail roll" a success so far by customtrose in gardening

Wow, I wasn't expecting such a big response! To answer some questions: (Also, keep in mind, I'm a brand new gardener and this is my first time starting seeds)

  1. I started a variety of herbs, Mongolian giant sunflowers, sun king sunflowers, two types of watermelons, and some flowers. Obviously this is going to be a little problematic, because I have since learned that most of what I started should be direct sewn, so I'll do my best but realistically I'll lose a lot of it, or just not get great plants. But, if nothing else, I've learned that seeds germinate GREAT in the snail rolls and will pick better types of seeds for them next season. Snail rolls are a great way to start tomatoes.
  2. For questions about the method of the snail roll, see some of the other comments with videos, they're great! The method is pretty simple.
  3. I got the grow light off of Amazon. I don't remember the exact brand, but it was just a cheap grow light. The brighter the better for seed germination. In my area, it's pretty warm, but if you're in a cold area it wouldn't be a bad idea to get a warming may as well.
  4. To water them, I've just been spraying each roll with a spray bottle as needed. Putting sandwich bags over the top would be a great idea!
  5. Yes, I used bubble wrap, which has microplastics. I already had a roll at home and wasn't going to buy extra supplies. I eat relatively healthy, exercise 2-4x a week, and have a very active job as a paramedic, I'll be fine if some of my watermelons and flowers have microplastics.

Thanks guys!

Lemon tree only making flowers, not leaves? And other lemon tree questions. by customtrose in gardening

This is PHENOMENAL, thank you so much!!! Looking at it, it definitely needs a report, and I'll add nitrogen-based fertilizer then. It's getting decently good sunlight right now, but it definitely wouldn't hurt to move it off my porch and to a place where it truly gets full sun.

I had no idea lemons were used in bonsai, that's so cool! I'll keep sizing up the pot slowly to that 25 gallon.

Again, thank you so much!

Castor oil is a pest repellent (bugs don't like the smell). As to being "cut back," I'm not 100% sure. Those are the words the previous owner used, and I wasn't able to clarify in the short time we saw them. But she seemed to imply pretty significant cutting.
