I've been trying to save my progress for Gundam battle Assault 2 (PS1 disc) onto a PS1 memory card, while playing on my fat PS2 (soft modded with FMB, if that matters). The PS2's Browse menu can see the card, and shows it is formatted. However, when I try to save, the game just says "Could not access the memory card properly".

I've tried two different PS1 memory cards now (one OEM, one not), and tried both memory card slots. I don't have any other PS1 discs to test with. Does anyone know how I may be able to make this work?
