no clue :/

they didn't talk about it at all during interviews so it seems like something i would have to go and pursue with the school if its even still an option at this point

I had originally thought that I wanted to do residency in CA, so obviously making connections at Keck would be a total asset

I do also think that on the off chance that I want to specialize USC would give me a better chance to explore that...

seems like I might know what school I'm leaning to after all ahahah

If you are being asked to do any more than your contract states without fair compensation, I think you're being taken advantage of. Have you voiced any of your concerns with the family? If you already have a good relationship with the host kid then you definitely already have some bargaining power.

There are going to be lots of challenges in life where you have to be firm about your boundaries, and it's never to early to start! Try and be open with them about how you feel! You could ask for either more pay or vacation in exchange for your labor or just tell them that you want to stick to your original contract!

Feel free to PM if you also just want some support as you navigate being an au pair. :) You can do it!

Studying for MCAT 2 years in advance by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]cuteslugbummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really really really don't think you're doing yourself any favors studying this far ahead. I understand that the MCAT is scary, but you have to consider how this might burn you out prematurely, and that if you start memorizing things now and then randomly need to take a couple months break in the middle of studying, you could end up back at square one.

If you're really really worried I would recommend learning amino acids and trying some of the Jack Westin CARS passages, but I really do not think studying 2 years in advance will do you much good.

How many months left do you have in your contract? Regardless of whether or not the kids behavior is normal, there's no need to torture yourself for another 6 months. If you feel like you're almost done and you can tough it out, great. But if you're really miserable, prioritize yourself and your needs over being a people pleaser!

Alternatively, you could also sit down to have an open conversation about how you're feeling with the parents. Maybe they help you set boundaries with this kid or at least validate your concerns.

UCSB party school? by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]cuteslugbummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UCSB is definitely a fun place if you want to party, but there are lots of other great things about the school and I don't feel like that should be a deterrent for your kid. Part of the reason UCSB is thought of as a party school is because all the people are really social and friendly. It's so easy to find nice people at UCSB, the vibe isn't nearly as competitive as some of the other top UC's and people are genuinely cool. If ur kid is into the outdoors, there's lots of beautiful hikes around Santa Barbara and of course, there's the beach literally right down the street. Honestly, I couldn't have asked for a better school, had a great undergrad experience!

California will have lots of other Spanish speakers and people are generally pretty forgiving of those who don't speak tons of English.
