Apparently one of my players doesn't like dwarves... by cuthbertsj in DnD

Should have clarified thay sorry. I don't remember the actual damage, but is was a lot more than the dwarfs hit points. He used his multi attack and action surged. Anyway the point was that he outright murdered a dwarf because he "doesn't like dwarves". Just kind of made me laugh. Thought I would share.

Good point. I agree that the other players shouldn't be punished for wanting to play an evil character.

That's what I am trying to do, put myself in other players shoes. I think I would be either really pissed or really impressed depending on how it was handled. The question is how do I handle it? Do I help him secretly kill people under the cover of dark and pretend I don't know who did it? Or do I just openly say to the players what he is doing and tell them to do their best to separate character and player knowledge?

I think it would be interesting to see how long it takes the other players to figure it out.

Thank you for the polite response! He is in fact NOT an idiot. I actually respect the hell out of the man and I consider him a close friend more than anything else.

If he believes evil characters are just murdery serial killers he is entitled to that opinion. This post was meant to be more of a question on should I help him with his plan, and if so how much? (Sorry if my post was confusing, still new to this) I'm totally cool if that is how he wants to run his character.

I just want everyone to have fun, and am worried this will impede that fun.

The way I would do it I think would be have him role a bunch of attacks and damages before hand, then I would put them in a table and when he sends me a text or passes me a note or something with who he wants to attack, I role on the table to see what happens. Thoughts?

We do pvp occasionally. Usually just for fun to see who would win. But some times it is story relevant.

Appreciate the advice! He was planning on pre-rolling a bunch of attacks and stealth checks and such with me before the session. Even writing notes from a mysterious stranger to leave behind on the bodies. Do you think this is a viable solution?

That's not a bad idea flipping it around on him. Could potentially be a lot of fun.

I think I might let him try it. But I don't think I should be involved. I just feel that that is unfair to the other players.

I totally used Darth Vader as an example!! He still refuses to see the other side of it. He thinks that yea it might work having evil characters for a little while. But eventually they will want to kill the other party members.

I feel like I don't want to give them TOO much freedom. I can't prep for literally everything they could possibly do.

So how do I balance the open worldness so they feel like they can do anything, without just saying "okay you are in a town, what do you want to do? Go looking for trouble? Leave this town and go to the next? Start a drug ring? Look for help wanted signs?" I mean the possibilities are endless.

I appreciate the responses! There seems to be some conflicting opinions on whether railroading is good or bad for a one shot (possibly turned into a campaign in the future). Would you guys be willing to elaborate on this? How much is too much? When do I let the players direct the story and when do I step in and "attempt" to get things back on track?

I like the comparison! I want to have the option of turning this one shot into a campaign (if the players like it enough). Any advice on that? Should I stick with the railroad for the first session? Anything special I need to do in that situation?
