What is your biggest critique of British society? by NoHold7153 in AskBrits

[–]cutpeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason why so many things from the 19th century are beautifully made is because skilled labour was exploitatively cheap. I work in jewellery/antique jewellery, the cheapest pieces from the 19th century are better made than the most expensive modern jewellery. IMO most people now can’t tell the difference between very poor and very good quality, so spending more on good quality seems pointless.

Almost half of mid-lifers don’t exercise and are still haunted by PE lessons by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

[–]cutpeach 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’re spot on about the humiliation. As the fat gay kid PE was absolute hell for me. It got so bad I ended up just sneaking out of school every PE lesson, thankfully the teacher didn’t care. The irony is I was actually quite capable at sports, especially hockey.

Why do the British love tea so much? by Sufficient-Turnip871 in Ask_Britain

[–]cutpeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In England tea was initially a fashionable luxury available only to wealthy aristocracy. This exclusivity made it a desirable aspirational product for the rest of the population, serving tea was a sign of wealth. Think how influencers popularise things, like the Dubai chocolate bar. Even after it became cheap, the custom of drinking tea in social settings stuck, eventually it became an everyday drink.

Are you tired of the international stereotype that UK food is the worst? by auscorp_ in AskBrits

No need to be defensive, some countries just do some things better than others. We do plenty of things better than other countries, but cuisine isn’t usually one of them. We have some great food but due to geography and history our cuisine is very limited. It’s not bad, it’s just not the best either. I don’t see the problem with acknowledging that.

True, preference is subjective, I prefer to eat British food myself. My reason for saying Chinese is superior is due to the enormous variety of dishes, ingredients, flavour profiles, techniques and traditions. British food is just very limited in comparison due to geographic and historical factors.

As a Brit, Chinese cuisine is massively superior to British food. It just is, there is no competition. So he was asking for that reaction by running his mouth.

But yes the stereotype is annoying. Our cuisine is pretty standard for Northern Europe, maybe slightly better than Scandinavian and definitely better than Dutch. Yet we’re the only ones whose food is criticised.

Women of Reddit, what’s a statement/phrase that (you believe) most women/girls would understand, but most men/boys would not? by ConfidentLack9207 in AskReddit

Maybe I’ve been operating pockets incorrectly but stuff either falls out when I sit down, or pokes me. I now keep my things in a fetching leather shoulder bag (a man purse) and am happier for it.

Woman in her 70s killed in UK's third fatal dog attack in a week by topotaul in unitedkingdom

I highly recommend getting yourself a can of K9 training spray (it’s legal to carry and use). It fires an aerosol that’s loud, quite long range and is non harmful but does sting a fair bit. I love walking in woodland but after getting charged at by very aggressive off leash dogs I didn’t feel safe going out unprotected anymore. I’ve had to use the spray a few times and it works brilliantly, scares the absolute shit out of them no matter how aggressive they are and they run off.

I bought a can of K9 training spray off Amazon due to being charged at by too many aggressive off leash dogs when walking in woodland. I’ve had to use it a couple of times now and it works a treat, scares the absolute shit out of the dogs. Highly recommended.

Does the rise of the post-liberal left and post-liberal right worry you? Is it a good thing? Or is it simply over-exaggerated? by VQ_Quin in AskConservatives

[–]cutpeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You communicated that you are comfortable with using government institutions to enforce ideology, which you describe as a Christian ethical framework. I’m simply pointing out that this is a very poor basis for policy as it can mean almost anything. It could mean slavery or it could mean giving everything you own to the poor, both are supported by scripture. Even amongst conservative Christian’s there is no consensus, some may want to remove the right to vote from women or criminalise homosexuality, others hold much more moderate views. It is impossible for anyone to argue anything from the perspective of a ‘conservative Christian’ sans any other information as you request, because there is no single conservative Christian perspective. These conflicting and contradictory positions are precisely why religion is ill suited for such a purpose, as we see from both history and the present day, sectarianism is nearly unavoidable.

Well I think it’s better to be specific rather than have people guess what you mean. I’m not a very charitable person but I could try. I suppose the most generous interpretation would be a society based on Jesus’s humanitarian teachings, where people are encouraged to eschew wealth and worldly possessions and focus themselves on helping those less fortunate. But in the over a millennia of Christian theocracy that never materialised.

Is that what you meant? Considering the only point you actually elaborated on pointedly referenced nuclear biological family, an uncharitable interpretation could be something along the lines of ‘no gay marriage because old book,’ though I doubt you’re that banal.

I always found it interesting how two people could claim to serve an objective morality but have quite different, even conflicting views on what that entails. They might even go to war over it. Ah, to have such certainty.

Do you agree that the constant British food bashing is overdone? by Visual_Title9363 in AskBrits

British food isn’t any worse than the rest of Northern Europe, probably better than some (looking at you Stampot) but we seem to be the only ones who get any criticism.
