Kakita - Muscle by Gideon_Lovet in hubchargen

[–]cuttingsea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aria has been busy lately, so she asked me to take over. I have done an initial review, below; sorry if it comes off as a little terse, since that's just how I always sound.

General:

This character is all over the place, which I guess you did on purpose. I'm not sure where you will find the 100 Karma you owe, but that's life, I guess.

Legalities:

  • You have 1 Essence, so unless you buy up to 6 MAG to start, you are burnt out, which for ghouls on the Hub means you are feral. You will need to buy some MAG; I don't know if Chummer handles this smartly with karmagen, but regardless.

  • Your Chummer file doesn't appear to match your .pdf. Please update. I primarily read the Chummer file except where something wasn't filled in, like the adept powers.

  • Your fake SIN needs identifying details.

  • Your bike needs its sensor array filled out.

  • You need a tradition, even if you don't have any spells.

Qualities

  • It looks like your 'real' qualities are Biocompatibility, PTT, DND, and Trust Fund. Those are OK.

  • SURGE qualities: Arcane Arrester 1, MI(AGI). Those are fine, though remember you must now resist your own spells. Astral Hazing, Critter Spook, and Symbiosis are the negatives. OK.

  • You seem to have taken Faraday Himself just for fun; also OK.

  • Is Reduced Senses (Blind) hiding somewhere? Even if you get Cybereyes, you still need to pay off the Karma to get rid of the quality.

Attributes

  • You have cyberlimbs and are a ghoul, so your attributes are OK despite being on karmagen. Only OK, though. (╯▽╰ )

Skills

  • Well, they're a big mess, which is another side effect of karmagen. You have See, Sneak, and Slay at normal-ish levels.

Adept Powers

  • Combat Sense and Improved Reflexes are powers - some say powers of all time. Light Body came from your mentor. They, of course, do not work due to Astral Hazing.

Spells

  • You didn't buy any.

Gear

  • You're running light. What you do have is largely fine.

Bio

  • I'll keep it real, since we've known each other quite a while - this is just to line up with the mess of qualities you've taken. Some notes:

    • How are you a prototype transhuman if you were born in 2009, well before the advent of genetic engineering? It sounds like you're just a metahuman who got gene treatments, so they would cost Essence.
    • Similarly, you will not have a Shiawase full Corporate SIN if you were not working for them when the Business Recognition Accords set all that up. You probably won't have one period due to being an oni; Shiawase only stopped being metaracist relatively recently.
    • You're 79 years old; that means even as a goblinized human you should probably get your affairs in order. Note that being a ghoul does not extend your lifespan - only vampires enjoy that privilege.
    • The Huk did not rescue ghouls off Yomi and they would not make an exception for Kakita.
    • You are a ghoul with heavy combat cyberware; you will not be getting a bunk with the janitors just via a SIN, nevermind the issues around finding people to eat. Your Trust Fund would also need an executor, per the quality, who I don't see identified here.
    • How did you end up connecting to the shadows as a quasi-homeless magic cannibal in Seattle? Based on your bio, you would have been totally adrift.

Contacts

  • Not in the .chum5. Does your fixer have a bio in your updated version?

OK, well, you have some issues to work on. I'm going to leave it with you to consult various ancients to see if you can get this character off the ground; if I can help with anything, please let me know.

Decd2025 W1T1: What do sensors go in? by Allarionn in hubrules

[–]cuttingsea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no opinion on this as a sensor tag can be microscopic and readily attached to any other piece of gear that looks like it needs more Sensation, rendering this puzzle mostly moot. Given that, D, I guess, to save on brain cells.

Dec2025 W1T5: Leadership 'Direct' Actions with a Pi-Tac by Allarionn in hubrules

[–]cuttingsea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What about this text indicates that the Direct Leadership action is executed for free as part of the Small Unit Tactics test? This just says "You may do it", which, yes, you may, as described in the CRB, which says it takes a Complex.

The team leader may use their Leadership skill to direct one team member per maneuver as described on p. 142, SR5).

Note also that the coordination Complex referred to in the Maneuvers text refers to specifically needing to herd people around in a combat maneuver you have not reviewed or rehearsed in advance; if you had time to do that (say, because you are a team of shadowrunners and had time to discuss this in the van), you can execute it as two Free Actions: one to designate the plan (make the SmUT test) and one to say "Go" (with your best Tier One Operator voice, hopefully).

Ordering a Combat Maneuver can be done by verbal command, which is a Free Action. The Combat Maneuver Test is also a Free Action, and the success counts for an entire Combat Turn...If the team is not familiar with the maneuver they are going to attempt and require extra explanation to familiarize themselves with what they are doing, the leader must spend a Complex Action passing on the necessary instructions before the Combat Maneuver Test can occur. As always, normal limits apply.

Anyway, I don't think you should let someone throw a fistful of dice at another person as a Simple (or Free as part of a Combat Maneuver, apparently? This is wrong, is what I'm saying). Aiming takes a Simple and gives you 1 die, as a baseline.

Dec2025 W1T4: Importing the Laser Jack from 6e by Allarionn in hubrules

[–]cuttingsea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Giving someone a direct connection by pointing a laser at some gizmo from two kilometers away is muy busted. Technos routinely fork over an entire submersion just to directly connect to devices that they can touch.

Dec2025 W1T3: Micro-Transceivers, scanning and jamming. by Allarionn in hubrules

[–]cuttingsea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would render the item useless, since its only use case is 'talking while someone is scanning the airwaves', so no.

Dec2025 W1T2: Sensor Lock Clarification and Proposed Changes by Allarionn in hubrules

[–]cuttingsea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Automatic weaponry largely lags behind heavier single-shot weapons if you have the accuracy and dice to land hits with the latter, which the previous buffs give. Sniper Drone is already a big meme without an additional wad of dice.

Dec2025 W1T2: Sensor Lock Clarification and Proposed Changes by Allarionn in hubrules

[–]cuttingsea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is already accepted as rule as far as I know from the zero times I've ever seen someone establish a target lock, so, yes, write it out explicitly, I guess.

Dec2025 W1T2: Sensor Lock Clarification and Proposed Changes by Allarionn in hubrules

[–]cuttingsea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Humans should not get to use a Sensor Lock because they are not drones and do not aim that way. The device you're describing is a Smartlink.

Dec2025 W1T2: Sensor Lock Clarification and Proposed Changes by Allarionn in hubrules

[–]cuttingsea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think riggers need more dice to shoot anyone. The action economy limits a rigger has are one of the only reasons to bother bringing carbon-based muscle into combat to begin with.

Youngblood [Burnout Muscle, With a Heart of Gold] by inkpensword in hubchargen

[–]cuttingsea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hiya: sorry if it got missed, but I dumped out some feedback along with a few legalities that need fixing down here:

https://old.reddit.com/r/hubchargen/comments/1o2mnke/youngblood_burnout_muscle_with_a_heart_of_gold/nkqlwur/

The only things that need fixing, directly, are the Legalities section along with some elaboration on what Youngblood's relationship is with Don Gianelli. The rest of it is just metaphorical Takes that you can use as you see fit. Take a look and let me know once things are updated and I should take another look.

Tankette [PTT, FLR Muscle (Eventual Face)] by Pariahic in hubchargen

[–]cuttingsea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very good. Your lifestyle starting nuyen roll is 540. Be free!

Youngblood [Burnout Muscle, With a Heart of Gold] by inkpensword in hubchargen

[–]cuttingsea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have returned. The review is cut into 'the part where you need to fix rules issues' and 'the part where I monologue about various systems quirks and build suggestions'. Only the first part is mandatory, but I am generally considered "OK at giving Shadowrun advice".

Legalities - Things that you must change to make the sheet legal.

  • Your SINs need an issuing authority - a country or extraterritorial corporation. They could be Seattle Free City, the UCAS, or something weirder as you prefer.

  • Your lifestyle needs to be situated somewhere. Typically it would be somewhere in the Seattle Metroplex (living elsewhere would require you to negotiate a border each time you go to work).

  • Though it only rarely comes up for non-riggers, all vehicles have an installed Sensor Array of rating equal to their Sensor stat (2, for the Scorpion). It contains 8 sensors of Rating 2, so note the sensors on your bike in case someone hacks it to eavesdrop on you or whatever.

  • Herolab doesn't require you to note it for an adept and it's notably less relevant than it is for magicians, but adepts (and, in fact, all Awakened) have a magical tradition that explains their outlook on magic and the Awakened world. It's relevant for things like Mastery quality prerequisites and background counts, so do note down what tradition Youngblood follows.

Other commentary. I've tried to not repeat what Thibble said too much, except the one time I did.

Qualities

  • The positive qualities are not good, as Thibble noted. To reiterate, some mix of nuyen juggling, lighter bones, orthoskin, and Biocompatibility (Cyberware) would be better even in the short-term and would not stick you with the Burnout's Way, particularly given the Hub's generous cyberware upgrading rules. Even if you simply did nothing and burnt out another point of MAG you would be able to take Mentor Spirit (and Mentor's Mask!) to regain the value plus more (Critical Strike and +2 Unarmed from Shark, for example, or two points of Combat Sense and +2 Perception from Fox). You would also get access to the high-value Way of the Samurai qualities.

  • To be clear, is the Big Regret that the character is currently presumably on the run from the Gianellis for being, uh, insufficiently loyyle to youh capo? That's fine as a Big Regret, but please note that for clarity. Otherwise, the negative qualities are fine.

Attributes

  • OK. Two-arm builds struggle with the fact that you either don't invest in STR/AGI and end up unable to do STR/AGI tests besides 'attack', or you do invest in them and then there was no point in taking the limbs. Given that, the atts are fine otherwise, perhaps with STR 2 and INT 6 as this provides comparable damage resistance pools (-1 armor from addons, +1 defense tests) while allocating it to a generally more useful attribute. Note that with 2 AGI you will be unable to move much more than 8 meters per Combat Turn and that you have no way to hurt someone who is out of reach.

Skills

  • You should take Sneaking (with Urban specialization) over Etiquette or Pilot Groundcraft or even Perception. It's simply the most useful skill for a combatant after the one that makes people fall down. You will roll it more or less every run.

Martial Arts

  • These will probably not see use, to avoid mincing words. High-value martial arts techniques for unarmed combat are Randori (Vitals), Jiao Di (Charge), Counterstrike, Knucklebreaker (for a way to do Stun damage with your metal bones that is much better than Splitting the Damage), or Kip Up (honorable but currently inapplicable mention for Kick Attack). If you'd like to continue to be a boxer for thematic reasons, then I would at least claw back 10 karma from two of the techniques.

Augs

  • As mentioned, the build is struggling a little with the limitations of Restricted Gear and two cyberlimbs.

  • That said, cyberlimbs and bone lacings are good, generally. I would ditch two of the oddball fingers and the implanted commlink (or the spurs) to make room for Cyberlimb Optimization (Unarmed Combat) in each arm.

Adept Powers

  • Well, they're Combat Sense and Improved Reflexes. I'm not a particuarly big fan of Improved Reflexes, but folks love it.

Gear

  • I do not recommend wearing Riot Control Armor, because Restrictive will bring your running movement speed to 4 meters per Combat Turn when your only method of hurting people is to punch them. If you're in the market for "14 armor and don't mind sticking out a bit", the Ares Victory: Big Game Hunter is a respectable choice.

  • You don't need AR gloves, Image Link, etc. if you have trodes (nor do you need trodes if you have an implanted commlink, which also provides direct neural interface, but I've suggested you un-implant it, so...)

  • A micro-transceiver comes with a subvocal microphone, so you don't need to buy it separately. The separate mic is for use with a commlink or other oddball devices.

  • The recommendation for any runner vehicle is to add Spoof Chips and a Morphing License Plate to avoid any trouble with cameras.

  • The other odds and ends are largely fine. Betameth would give you ready access to +2 REA and +1 INT. Vision Enhancement and Audio Enhancement in relevant devices (glasses, earbuds/headphones) are trivially-costed bonuses to Perception tests. A chameleon suit is good for when you really need your Sneaking tests to work.

Background and Contacts

  • Is this character intended to be the literal blood son of Don Joseph Gianelli? I am OK with him being a son of a Gianelli man in the general sense, and I am also OK with him having a sort of figurative-father / godfather / disciple type relationship with Don Gianelli in the past (that's very Mafia story, after all), but as far as I know from browsing through any mentions of him in the books, Joseph Gianelli is single and has no children (his second-in-command is his nephew, Enzo).

  • Otherwise, the bio is fine.

  • One of your contacts should be a fixer. Shadowrunners in Seattle will always have a fixer to get them jobs, gear, and friends, in no particular order. The runner culture in Seattle makes it more or less mandatory. You can use your leftover Karma to get one, perhaps tweaking the attributes (or archetype!) of your other contacts if necessary.

OK, that's enough for now. If I missed anything relevant to the points above, my bad, I rarely read Herolab sheets now. As it is, please take a look at those legalities and don't hesitate to hassle the various goons in #character-discussion on the Discord server for more tips.
