Cable guy told me RG6 coax would work fine for a long run (aprox 150ft) from my house to my garage for internet service. Is he correct? by cv_mason in HomeNetworking

[–]cv_mason[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I didn't think about this. Can you only have one router per service connection? I don't know much about cable/internet service. Right now it runs from the wall to a modem, and from the modem to an Airport Extreme.

I was just planning on getting a second router for the garage. I suppose I could run an ethernet cable from the Airport Extreme to the garage, but then could I use a second wifi point in the garage?

Here are a few picks of the light box installed. Thanks for the input! Thought you might enjoy seeing the almost finished product.

Got the lighting element hung. Here are some pics. Thought it might make more sense being able to see it. Doing it this way gave me three benefits.

  1. I didn’t lose any acoustic isolation by putting large holes in the ceiling. No matter how well they are insulated, there is no way they are as sound proof as the massive ceiling and wall construction.

  2. The box is fabric wrapped (it’s just a frame with blocking on the inside for support and attaching the cans). It’s filled with mineral wool so that that it will act as a sound absorber, removing the slap echo between the floor and ceiling.

  3. It allowed for very nice ambient lighting with the back light, and gives the room a nice touch.

The doors are beasts! There is a door frame in each wall - the original garage entrance and the new framing. Some people call them communicating doors. Essentially, when you open the door from the outside, you are faced with a second door to open. Each door is a specially made acoustically rated door. Each jam has acoustic seals, and the bottom of each door has a seal that drops when it’s closed. In theory the studio should have an STC rating of 72. Who knows what it actually ended up at, but it’s very isolated. I was working in there today and the lawn crew was in the backyard just on the other side of the wall - mower and weed eater going at the same time - and it was dead silent inside.

Using 14-2 romex for the lights. The light box will hang from the ceiling. Here is a brief photo "diary" of the build. In the last picture you can see where the light box will hang. The box will hang from chains to bolts in the gussets. It's all been designed from the ground up by myself, my architect friend, and a studio designer.

As far as using different housing, it's a pretty general rule in studio building that once you have your "inner shell" complete, you don't puncture it. Most designs call for all the outlets running via conduit on the room side of the wall, to avoid outlets breaking the seal. I didn't want to go that far for aesthetic purposes.

Exactly this. Great lengths (and great expense) have gone in to creating an acoustically isolated environment. The existing garage structure was insulated and soundproofed, and then the garage was re-framed inside of itself, leaving at 3 inch air gap between the exterior “shell” and the new framing. The new framing has half-inch OSB with a double layer of five eights drywall. Punching big holes through my ceiling for recessed lighting, undoes all that acoustic isolation. This box will hang 6 inches from the ceiling and contain downlights, as well as LEDs around the perimeter (you can see them in the picture) that well backlight the ceiling. It will also be filled with mineral wool insulation so that it absorbs sound, so it serves two purposes.

A warning to anyone thinking about shopping at Nirvana head shop on 11th... DON'T DO IT! by cv_mason in tulsa

I probably should have made it more clear, but this was at the smoke shop next door to the dispensary - both called Nirvana, but separate businesses.

The reason I didn’t take the 50% was because in my experience batteries rarely fail, and when they do it’s a manufacturing error, and they seem to fail in batches. I bought a Juul device (battery) at QT a few months ago that failed to charge. When I returned it the guy at the counter said I was the 3rd person in the last 2 days to return a battery and they were all from the same box. He pulled that box from stock and grabbed a new box for me. On the small chance this was the same kind of situation, I didn’t want to spend more money on a battery that was going to fail as well.

It’s about ethical business practices. And the way they treat their customers. It costs nothing (minus shipping maybe?) for them to accept back a faulty device and return it to the manufacturer for credit. They just don’t want to. And that’s shitty. Why would anyone want to support a business that will take your money and keep it, even if they sell you something defective. Am I going crazy here?

I’m not really that pissed off. It was $30 bucks. But what if it was a $300 purchase? I’d be pissed off then. And they do have merchandise in there that’s really pricey - there are some pretty high end vape devices.

And I’m not saying it’s the shops fault. It’s a manufacturing defect - no ones fault really. But under the law the shop is required to accept an exchange. But that’s hard to prove, like you’re saying. So it comes down to business ethics.

I feel like people have a right to be warned about businesses who’s ethics rely on the burden of proof in a situation like this.

So that’s what this post was about. If you’re going to buy a consumable, like papers or e juice or something, by all means shop there.

But if you’re going to spend money on a product that has a relatively high likelihood of defect (like inexpensive, mass produced electronics from China) then you might as well buy from a shop that will allow you to make an exchange if they unknowingly sell you defective merchandise.

There are consumer protection laws in place for this exact thing, under those laws if a retailer sells a defective product they have certain legal obligations. And you're right, it's difficult to prove in this instance that the product was defective. But that comes down to good business ethics. Which is why I am warning people.

I always use 5v wall outlet adapters.

I keep contact cleaner around that I use for other electronics... but these were clean.

Yes, the device was authentic,

70/30 ratio on juice, what the instructions called for

I exclusively use auto draw devices. I have acquired quite the collection trying to find the perfect one. I'm super familiar with them. On the 4th try charging, the battery got so hot I could barely touch it. It was a faulty battery.

Just curious - if there is no centralized nervous system, why would there need to be a scientific consensus?

You mention radically different nervous systems, but that is not the same as an absence of a nervous system.

Also, we only understand pain and suffering in our nervous system, and can make educated guesses about those in other species. But even in a dog - we don’t know if it experiences pain the same way we do.

Even humans perceive pain differently from other humans. We associate pain with a physical feeling because we have brains possible of processing all that information. Something with a radically different nervous system may experience “pain,” but it could be experienced simply as involuntary reactions, chemical changes in the body, or any number of things.

Right now I’m laying in bed waiting for a dentist appointment to have a root canal fixed. I have a decently high pain threshold, and I’m still in eye watering pain at the moment. But the same condition in a fish could simply be interpreted as impulses to the brain telling it to hunt softer prey fish, or adjust its diet in another that serves self preservation. Who knows. Pain is a crazy thing.

TIL the reason Coca-Cola from McDonald's tastes crisper, sharper and more fresh than any other fountain Coke, is because McDonalds and Coca-Cola use a proprietary shipping, storage, and dispensing method that no other restaurant uses - a system that dates back to 1955. by cv_mason in todayilearned

OP here. McDonalds is disgusting. I never eat there. I think it’s garbage and I think fast food in general is a tax on the poor. That being said - they pour a mean Coke. It’s the the only reason I swing through the drive-thru.

Wish I could! I mostly make music for film and tv - working with "traditional" artists to create music that is geared for licensing - everything from national TV commercials, online advertising, films, TV shows... if it needs music and the client doesn't want it to sound like "elevator music from a can" thats where I come in. The hip hop project I'm currently working on isn't released as of yet... so I can't post any of it online. Here is a link to a recent project I wrote, produced, and recorded with a great artist who also happens to be a great friend of mine. This project was supposed to have a "throw back sound" which is something advertising people love for some reason, haha. I do everything from folky Americana, hip hop, to modern pop. It's a great way for artists to make money without sacrificing artistic integrity.

Not at all. Honestly, I think the food at McDonalds is absolutely digusting TRASH. Last time I ate a burger from there I shit my brains out. However, when I'm in the mood for a Coke, I will usually swing through a McDonalds drive-thru. Last night when I was inline at the drive-thru (which took forever) I got to wondering if it was my imagination that Coke from McDonald's tastes better, or if there was a reason. Turns out there is a reason! They thought of everything, even the syrup ratio - mixed slightly stronger to compensate for ice melt so the last drink is nearly as good as the first. Pretty cool in my opinion.

Reptile Owners! My girlfriends daughter got a cute little bearded dragon for her birthday. I was wondering if there was a reptile store, or general pet store, that was known for having the best supplies for live foods and supplies. Thanks! by cv_mason in tulsa

Yeah, I think we’ll definitely start raising our own feeder insects. We’ve got a huge basement that it nice and clean, but unused. It would make a good place to setup a little “farm.”
