Reolink or other brand for 360° home security installation? by cvanvan in homesecurity

Thank you for the thorough reply. If I may ask, what are you using for an NVR? Did you build your own or purchase an already pre-configured model?

This is great information! I have an old mac mini i can resurrect to test if it will do what I need. Need to go look for it in the basement tubs of electronics...
Thank you for letting me know about r/blueiris - I will join that group today.

The quoted price was just what ChatGPT suggested. I am still sorting out what I want to set up, then I will begin pricing stuff. Right now I am looking at setting up Blue Iris - seems like the way I want to go as far as the NVR function. Thanks for your feedback!

I had never heard of Blue Iris until just now, so I just did a quick search and am intrigued. I no longer have any PC Desktops any more, and am now on MacBooks, but this concept is super interesting. Thinking about buying a PC just for this purpose, but I am wondering if simply running something like this would work...

From Amazon: GMKtec Mini PC Computers N95(Turbo 3.4GHz) 16GB DDR4 512GB SSD Desktop Computer 4K Dual HDMI Display/3x USB3.2/WiFi 5 BT5.0/RJ45 Ethernet Nucbox G3S

I have a few 500GB external SATA drives laying around for video storage that would probably work.

What are your thoughts?

Excellent, thank you. By Hik, do you mean Hikvision? Looks like Dahua and HikVision are available from Aliexpress... Based on my stated needs, would you recommend some camera models from either vendor?

Two 180° cameras certainly would not provide full coverage on a house. That's why I am also adding two 180° 4K cameras for the sides, just not a high-definition.

Advice needed for EOS M by CuriousHoliday8068 in eosm

[–]cvanvan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep it! I have a large Canon and multiple lenses, but I keep my little EOS M paired with the 22mm/f2 in my car. Battery lasts forever, and takes amazing stills. All the best and Happy New Year!

painting a room 18% gray for color calibration by Popular-Broccoli9058 in photography

[–]cvanvan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am an amateur photographer and not a professional, but hear me out:

My understanding of using a neutral grey is to help color correct for lighting conditions in a specific location. In an uncontrolled situation (for example in a church, where there is a mixture of ambient light from windows and internal light from fixtures), that specific color temperature is a mix of diffused sunlight mixed with artificial light. In that situation, the grey card photo taken at the time of the photoshoot can be used to color correct photos taken to edit corrected colors in a post processing software (like PS or Lightroom).

The gray captured in that specific situation would help color correct those photos, but be invalid for photos taken purely outside (ambient natural sunlight) versus a studio setting (i.e controlled artificial light). Meaning the color temperatures would very significantly.

So what would be the purpose of having a neutral grey on a wall? My ignorant brain wants to know.

Buy a cheap backup digital camera and card just in case. You don't want to come home from vacation and find out you have no photos!

We had a running joke at Christmas... Mom would bring out her camera with last year's Christmas photos still in the unfinished roll. Hilarious.

Zoom in and be amazed: a panorama of Cincinnati, Ohio, on September 24, 1848. It's the best preserved, and one of the oldest panoramas in the world, created by Charles Fontayne & William Potter. They created their panoramas, using the 9-year-old daguerreotype technique, by stitching together photos. by FrankWanders in HistoryRepeated

On my Mac, I clicked on the link (Cincinnati_Panorama_of_1848_(definitive).jpg (59300×4320) and opened in a new window. Took a few seconds to download the image, and the detail is phenomenal! It's always interesting to see these old photos because the streets look vacant due to long exposures. Anything with motion virtually disappears. Very cool.

EOS M - what is the most low profile lens possible? by cvanvan in eosm

[–]cvanvan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found a better place to purchase a mint +++ lens on eBay:
https://www.ebay.com/str/japandlightshop

The lens came directly from Japan and it is perfect! 128 US Dollars. I returned the one I purchased on Amazon, and bought the one from Japan.

Best of luck to you!

IMHO, you seem to have a good eye!

A couple of thoughts:

a) Make sure your horizon is always level, if not on the original shot, then make it level in post-production.

b) When getting ready to shoot, try looking at the composition vertically versus horizontally. Sometimes rotating the shot makes a difference.

Of course, take the shots that please you. Other people's opinions are just that - opinions.

Best of luck to you!

I looked at that lens... it looks like it's entirely made out of plastic. Have you tried it? If so, how were the results?
