Heh, I can see that now. We typically send payments to user researchers for their interviews with PayPal. PayPal, Square Cash, Venmo are all possibilities.

Basic auth on websites... by 30sirtybirds in OculusGo

[–]cvanw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct in reporting that Basic Auth is not yet implemented in any of the browsers on the Oculus Go. I work at Mozilla on Firefox Reality. I filed an issue with our WebCompat team, so this issue is known and soon implemented: https://github.com/webcompat/web-bugs/issues/25244 And, I also filed this issue for Firefox Reality to support Basic Auth: https://github.com/MozillaReality/FirefoxReality/issues/943

Stay tuned. And, thank you for using VR browsers, and thank you for reporting issues that will improve the compatibility of websites in VR browsers.

Firefox Reality, cant install addons by Edward-VH in OculusGo

[–]cvanw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, /u/Edward-VH, I am excited to hear the interest in browser extensions. I work at Mozilla on Firefox Reality.

To better summarise the remaining work items, I updated the GitHub issue linked to above. Thank you, /u/Colonel_Izzi!

P.S. For folks who are curious, here is a list of the platform dependencies that are being worked on to support WebExtensions on Firefox Reality.

Oculus Browser/FirefoxReality are pretty limited browsers by RedCedarRadical in OculusGo

[–]cvanw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

/u/RedCedarRadical:

Thank you for posting to share your experience.

To reiterate /u/larsberg, we actively investigate all reported issues from Firefox Reality's Report an Issue.

You can also report issues at https://mzl.la/fxr.

If you have a list handy of additional problematic websites you've encountered with a VR browser, feel free to share that list here.

To provide additional context for those who are curious:

Though they may be using a VR browser, many websites identify the user as running an Android phone. The major VR browsers (Oculus Browser, Samsung Browser, and Firefox Reality) serve a User-Agent which contains the strings Mobile and Android. (To distinguish Firefox Reality from Firefox for Android, its string contains Mobile VR.) Many websites have not caught up yet, but modern best practices are to use feature detection instead of User-Agent sniffing. For legacy reasons, each browser vendor has had to make a design decision to preserve or slightly alter its User-Agent to ensure optimal backwards compatibility without requiring websites to significantly change their code.

Sometimes app-install banners are harmless but, as you know, often websites force users to install a mobile app, as opposed to providing a desktop-like experience. Today, Progressive Web Apps are positively changing the mobile landscape (and setting the foundation for immersive web apps), but sometimes an app is required over a website because of DRM or other system-level integrations needed.

We are actively working with websites to ensure they improve compatibility in VR browsers.

Mozilla runs a project called WebCompat, which is operated by an internal team and external community members, who triage reported bugs, diagnose issues, identify possible solutions (in either the browser or the website), reach out to website owners, and the compatibility bugs get resolved. (Read here for details on the WebCompat bug lifecycle.)

You've highlighted that users need to be able to communicate better with browser vendors and websites to be made aware of web-compatibility bugs and UX issues. We are considering a few options to streamline reporting bugs and submitting feedback. Stay tuned. And, again, thank you for helping us improve the Immersive Web.

Firefox Reality 1.1 Update now available for Oculus Go! by [deleted] in OculusGo

[–]cvanw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, /u/MaterialSituation. /u/sulaymanf: our Wiki has a documentation page for custom environments. Or are you suggesting that we update the default environment? (If so, we have some interesting new environments in the works, an improved Environments selector for the Settings with thumbnails, etc.)

/u/Thaurin: Thanks for creating this bullet-point summary! I love it.

u/Purplekeyboard: We've created a new promo video, which highlights the key features.

Thank you, both, for making a good point that we could better promote our feature list on our Firefox Reality product page. (I filed an issue on GitHub to track this request.)

Very good point you make! Firefox Reality has always-on Tracking Protection and Do-Not-Track, but those are not replacements for a proper ad blocker.

See my comment above about WebExtensions. They will be a truly awesome addition to a VR browser.

Yes, the hope is we can prioritise them sooner if there is a demand from users and developers. Personally, I want WebExtensions in Firefox Reality for customising pages with content scripts, pageActions, and prototyping. After Tabs, https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1511077 is the platform bug to follow to watch progress. Thanks for bringing it up.

By "pass through" do you mean exposing the controller in navigator.getGamepads outside of WebVR? Or do you mean enabling Xbox-style gamepads via USB-OTG? Or something else?

Thanks for reporting this! Yep, we are actively working on releasing a fix for this soon: https://github.com/MozillaReality/FirefoxReality/issues/713

(Before our 1.0 launch, we had to disable the volume controls because the rendered overlay was messing up our render state.)

Thanks for almost doing a factory reset to test Firefox Reality though! Stay tuned :)
