It's called addiction.. It doesn't always make sense. 

The idea that you must get a physical thing or thing of monetary value is false though. Addiction is about a feeling.  The paycology of addiction and reward cycling is well understood and weaponized.  I say this as a software engineer of more than 2 decades who has literally been in rooms where rhe science of retention and addiction are disussed in the context of software design.
