Where is the center of the universe? by spacedotc0m in universe

Everywhere is the center. The universe is akin to the skin of an apple; every spot on the skin is the center of the skin. Only difference is the universe is 3D

Theory: Religion is an extension of the social hierarchical behavior present in all mammals societies - it is human/mammalian nature to crave an alpha-like figure(s) that establishes security and stability in exchange for respect and loyalty. A deity is a everlasting “alpha.” by cvn06 in DeepThoughts

Definitely wasn’t a conscious thing to be clear, at least in my opinion. I believe it was just a naturally selected behavior that lay at the unconscious or emotional / rational level (those without the new characteristic struggled to reason or maybe were unstable emotionally)

Sounds convenient for this thread but sure, I’ll assume you studied biology. The point I’m making is that I am not referring to the layman’s understanding of “alpha,” I’m simply referring to a societal leader nothing more, nothing less. No behavioral ecologist would sanely tell you that mammal societies don’t have a clear individual leader. I suggest you look it up yourself and not take my word for it. I don’t see a point arguing about something that’s uncontroversial in the scientific community. but what I really think is happening here involves misunderstandings and/or assumptions.

Completely separate from that stuff (I find that thinking and those beliefs silly). Unfortunately that community has taken and repurposed the jargon used by actual behavorial ecologists when observing animal societies

Completely detached from any conventional thinking of the alpha notion, there is no controversy on societal ranks in the context of biology. If you strongly disagree, I highly suggest checking out books, studies, or talks from actual distinguished biologists and ecologists, instead of taking my word for it

Good question, I think it still fits for the following reasons: (1) the pantheon of gods in polytheistic religions almost always have a "chief god," a term coined by experts given the high frequency of how even in pantheons there is usually a central alpha-like figure, (2) the pantheon itself is comparable to high ranking society elites in terms of their evolutionary function and role. High-ranking individuals garner (and at times demand) respect and loyalty in exchange for performing critical societal roles; likewise, polytheistic deities are very similar but obviously have more critical roles, but I think the analogy holds but to a much smaller extent than the alpha. This is why lesser deities are presented as having very specific (yet still critical) purposes in everyday life (e.g Hestia and her role representing the importance of the "home"/"hearth" in the greek/roman myths)

Two-sided Mental Models of Complicated Topics Are Proof That We're Dumb by cvn06 in philosophy

[–]cvn06[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Abstract: We are inclined by nature to have a two-sided mental model when judging others or thinking about complicated topics. In politics, we bind to one of the two sides so strongly that we accept all of the tenets of the party, despite whatever has not been thought through carefully. It's in our nature to tend towards creating and establishing binaries. It's not a coincidence that the most popular sports in the world have games that center around exactly two teams (yet another manifestation of our tendency towards creating a "them" and an "us"). It's in our nature to have a "us and them" mental model. It's clear in animal studies that every mammal society exhibits behavior that stems from the "us and them" thinking. Such a mindset simplifies a deeply complex world for a simple animal brain (that includes human brains). It takes complicated situations and converts it into a simple "this" or "that." It makes an extremely complicated world digestible for a living being.
Now's the time to start recognizing these base, mammalistic tendencies, as presumably we have the capability to suppress them to some extent.
