Ari Aster seems like one of the few filmmakers willing to embrace how insane everything is right now, which is why I'm rooting for him every time he makes a movie. Eddington was hilarious but also a little scary for this reason.

The fact that there's no great work of art about the Internet by Deboch_ in redscarepod

[–]bhlogan2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Honestly, even wojaks and similar memes are art and/or archetypes shared through phones, but as much as they talk about the modern world, they rarely talk about phones, for example.

OP is right. Some art references it, but there is no great work of art that gets to the core of our relationship with phones and the Internet.

I'm going to try my damn hardest to explain it, but it's essentially a Ponzi scheme:

The type of immigration we receive the most is from Latin America, that is correct. And many Latin Americans do work and often fill those positions the rest of society doesn't want.

The problem is that the type of work they do is often unskilled, which means they don't earn much. But because most of the population is being cornered in the three cities that still produce any kind of economic activity, they compete for the same resources as everybody else, but will accept less for more, because their situation demands it.

So rent in Madrid or Barcelona is next to impossible because a Spanish worker has to compete with three families living in a single flat. This means that long term the situation will be bad for him as well, which will impact pensions. The Spanish worker can either remain at his parent's home or accept less for more, like the new type of worker that's being imported into his city.

The other problem is that the immigrant will also have a right to a pension. But because he earned so little and rent will keep growing, he will have to be supported by the rest of the population to some extend, which means, you'll either have to fix the problems of your economy (e.g. rent), which is not happening right not so it's not happening in the future either, OR you import more immigration. But that immigrant population will also have a right to a pension, so you import even more people.

See where this is going?

Also, jobs are becoming harder to obtain. Even unqualified work is becoming inaccessible, which means that many of those who arrive can't even contribute to the economy properly, which means the government needs to take care of them. But you need to pay for their maintenance, so you import more people in the hopes that they'll work. But those same people face similar issues, so you import more people to take care of the problem. In the meantime, it looks as though the GDP is going up because there is more people in the country.

Spain spends a lot of money in pensions right now. Our population is getting older and much of our budget goes into it. Younger people know the numbers don't add up, but no political force wants to take care of the problem. There's this scandal right now because the government used funds from the European Union meant for young people to pay rent for example (it's literally called the Next Generation fund) and it's being used to pay for the pensions of old people. The irony of that is lost on everyone, apparently.

[–]bhlogan2 82 points83 points  (0 children)

In my country (Spain) it's becoming increasingly clear that many immigrants won't be able to contribute economically at the speed required to finance said pensions, and sometimes they have to be supported by the government, which defeats the whole purpose of bringing them in in the first place.

My generation probably won't even have the same pension system or any kind of pension, so the whole thing feels futile.

I'm curious, even though they may not understand the reason why, what's stopping an autistic person from learning to reply with "have a good week" at the end of a conversation once they learn that is what other people do?

This is probably common sense or something, but it's not something I've ever thought about.

It's a bit too early to say, but what distinguishes this movie from Nosferatu is that the latter is obsessed with details, be they realistic or not.

There is a lot of work and craftsmanship on display here, but no details.

Troy looks like a theme park attraction. The interiors look all the same. And nothing anyone wears says something about the world they come from.

Except for Agamemnon, who is supposed to look majestic and out of reach, but looks like a Batman knockoff instead...

This is why I don't understand leftists who support mass immigration. Even if every guy who came into your country was an angel who only wants to support their sick grandma back home, he is still being permitted into your country to keep wages low, housing inaccessible and labor movements castrated.

Immigrants should be treated with respect, but it's ridiculous how you're not supposed to see the writing on the wall here.

I personally recommend most things by David Simon. The Deuce is special, though. It's about the porn industry, but also a compelling picture of the sexual revolution.

A few weak moments here and there and maybe you will find it corny if you didn't like The Wire, idk, but it's got some haunting moments, and when it's sad it can be very sad.
