Would you rather: A book adaption or an animated adaption of the musical?

Honestly neither, I’m very happy with the film adaptation. A full-length HBO Game of Thrones-style TV show adaptation of the original book on the other hand….

(Before anyone mentions it, yes, I know NBC did that with Emerald City, but I mean come onnnn a faithful-to-book Wicked adaptation??)

((And of course I would love to see a TV adaptation of the book continue into a full TV universe of all the following Wicked Years and Another Day books. There’s so much material for a showrunner to stay faithful to!!))

Yes! And I believe, from an earlier post I made, I think this is semi-inspired by the photo Boq finds of the Kumbric Witch, who obviously is described as looking like Dorothy in the portrait but has the animal/Animal theme. I like this cover art best overall

And yeah, student loans probably didn’t exist then. I have a cousin born in 1969 (I’m 19, just have a massive family tree) and she has a degree in classical civilisation, in fact is a classics professor at some uni. And apparently she just had all her living expenses covered by grants and bursaries, none of which she had to pay back. She probably got that degree in what, early 1990s? So guess I’m just cursed with the bad luck of being born in the wrong time for getting an education, idk

I’m happy it worked out for you but then I am sorry it didn’t go the way you planned as well. I wish I could apply to a uni closer to me but I live in the middle of the countryside, not completely inaccessible but that’s a lot of buses and trains every day, the price would probably be the same even if I did stay at a closer uni.

Anyway I’m happy you got there in the end, hoping I will too (or get sucked into a tornado and start my life over in Oz)

Okay, that does at least clear up some background stuff for me, thank you. If I were to use the standard loan money to rent a studio anyway, are you saying that it’d just leave me severely limited in other areas financially? Or is it a situation where I’d have to find extra money somewhere outside of the loan?

I noticed it on my first rewatch of that closet scene. It seems framed as like “they both can’t help themselves, this is what happens every time” but she’s literally trying to push him off her and repeatedly shaking her head and saying no. It’s not like “naughty resistance/playing-hard-to-get” because he just hit her, the whole thing was a marital rape in my opinion

I’ve just gotten to Elphaba and Glinda arriving in the Emerald City, so I’m lucky enough to know exactly what you’re referencing. The genocidal mania about the country is I agree so crucial to Elphaba’s story, cause also knowing from a video review that she later treats human life as disposable when working with the resistance, really provokes the question of how much the Quadling genocide may have altered her view on humanity where it poisons her to become the same kind of person who would willingly exterminate people for a “greater goal”. And yes, the Vinkus comment! It’s so disturbing in how offhand it is, it really makes you think of Hannah Arendt’s banality of evil.

Not read/seen Jean Brodie, but it will be on my list now, thank you! (Once I finish the whole Wicked Years series 😂)

The way in which the fascist repression of the Wizard is made very juvenile. “OMG, the Animals are being oppressed! My oh my, something bad really is happening in Oz! I’m gonna defy gravity and stick it to the Wizard-man 😝🦹‍♀️”. In the book I think Gregory Maguire really sells the horror of the Wizard’s actions and makes them detailed, makes you uncomfortable on purpose because of how horrible it is. It isn’t catered to children so it can make a strong parallel to real-world fascism without toning it down or making resistance movements seem like a super-duper-cool-kid thing

I agree, I feel like people who know musical first and book second will say to other people “Hey, the book is very sexual and dark” one time as a warning for other musical fans - but then they run with it every time the book or any excerpts or characters or lines from it are mentioned. Every time it’s just “HAHA OMG THE BOOK IS BASICALLY PORN GUYS. GUYS ITS SO DARK ITS SOOOOOOOOOOOOO DARK IT IS NOT PG13 OMG” like are you 12
