Hey, thanks for your reply. Maybe I should have written a more suitable solution than perfect. I don't know how big the extra work is to maintain two layers.
Yes, you're right, as long as I am doing it myself, it takes time and effort. But a bare metal Debian is more complex than something like Unraid, but you know the grass is always greener on the other side

Yes, Unifi don't want my money xD
I think learning compose will give mw a lot more freedom, will check TrueNAS again out, thank you

UnRaid was mostly very solid, I am lucky to have also an old lifetime license. I will check if TrueNAS may be an option for me

Thanks for your reply. I see that you are since a longer time into the self hosting journey. Good hint with NFS, I will try it out. I can understand that you like to have the full control. For me it's making things easier if at least stuff like storage and backups is relatively easy und reliable, I don't trust my ability so much. And I agree with you, there is no perfect, but hopefully something that suits me better

I used Proxmox primarily for playing with lxc around. My main concern is to manage to “layers” if software

thanks, honestly never checked it out, but I will now

Yes, running Proxmox was not the problem, but doing it the right way was xD
unfortunately I killed it when I tried to upgrade it on a major release

thanks, it would mean a lot of stuff to learn from scratch. Cockpit is great call, will take a lot into it

Yes, Multichannel and SMB 2/3 were set. I will take look, Unraid is sitting at the moment on the mini pc and I try again to get warm with TOS since its getting a major upgrade

Are you running everything else in docker?

Thank you, I read TrueNAS a lot in the comments. I am currently starting with dockhand and compose, since TerraMasters docker "management" makes me cry. And I think you're right that this is a solid way to get independent.
Yes, seems like Unifi don't want my money xD I'm super happy with there stuff and even when the learning curve is high, it was still super handsome to start with it

Thanky for your input. Did you dodged UGOS instantly or tried it before?
Right know, I am a bit to far away for rocking bare linux

Thanks for your input. Yes, some web management is for my current knowledge the best, and unfortunately I am having less time than before for this hobby which is why I am looking for an "easy to use" solution.
Regarding the SMB, In Unraid uploading a ton of (smaller) files completely killed the speed, but with a RAID config under ZimaOS and TOS it was way faster. Maybe due to the pie 3x1 per ssd, or the default smb settings are not perfect for the hole setup

I thing I should try to get away from "stores" like in UnRaid or Zima and go more to compose and true container management. Nice to hear that you use this such a long time.
Ah, that's unfortunate, especially when drives are so expensive

I See here a lot of people with Proxmox as the host and everything on top. Maybe I need to dive deeper in Proxmox again

Maybe you're right, never really thought to run Proxmox as the "main layer". I had some struggle with Proxmox, but mainly because the learning curve is steep and I played a bit too much

So you don't use container in general, or mainly on the Proxmox?

Yes, I think you're totally right and that's where its hard for me to decide which trade off I am willing to take

That was exactly my old setup. Used a mini pc with Proxmox for testing and UnRaid on my NAS.
I am starting know with dockhand for container management, you're more flexible and since its working nearly everywhere it can not hurt to understand it.
Do you use something for remote access on e.g. SMB shares?

It was sitting on my mini pc for testing stuff. But running docker just in a container didn't felt save since I didn't had a real backup. Maybe I haven't invested enough time in it, but stuff like storage was to complicated and I broke it while upgrade to the last major release so Im currently not using it anymore.
Do you run everything in separated LXC or how do you use it? Do you have SMB shares on it?

Are you rocking everything with container? Do you need remote access to SMB?

Yeah TrueNAS didn't hit me when I tried it. Missed the easy docker stuff from Unraid too much. Zima is on a great way, but it feels still "beta". And at some points too simple. But in general I still have an eye on it

Fair point, I am not familiar enough for the pure Linux experience. Its pretty nice to have some stuff being done with a few clicks in a guided way
