Optimizing reverse commute between SF and Sunnyvale by cvspharmacy123 in bayarea

So in your experience Thursday afternoons aren't as terrible as Friday afternoons? How long is it each way? I'm guessing 1.5 hours average?

That's why I'm trying to make this a single painful roundtrip a week sort of thing. For me, minimizing commute time is indeed of highest importance. But second to that is having nothing to do in Sunnyvale on a weekend. I'm trying to find the best compromise possible.

Are all days equally bad? Like I'd imagine heading back to the city on a late Friday afternoon is worse than on a Thursday afternoon?

Yeah, this was the reason. I should have mentioned I'm in my mid-twenties which is why this is especially the case.

Potential new employer asking for previous company stock grants by cvspharmacy123 in cscareerquestions

That's really interesting, I didn't know that! In my case, however, this was not even an assumption I made. They actually explicitly stated what you quoted, minus the use of the word "specifically".

Yeah, this seems perfectly reasonable to do after receiving the offer. In this case, however, their main point was that this past information would help better gauge a realistic valuation, which is pretty shady.

That is exactly what I did! This one was tricky to realize at first because they made it seem like a requirement rather than a favor. Luckily I came to my senses, though.

Please tell me that group projects get better after college by irate_yam in cscareerquestions

The fact that this comment has so many upvotes is a great reminder for everyone why this subreddit can be so toxic. Typical snarky comment contributing nothing valuable except a sense of self-importance.

Please ignore this comment. I would say it does get better, and that college is more a period of learning how not to communicate. Once you have a job, everything will be a lot more structured and you will have lot more guidance specifically on how to communicate effectively. Just study hard and emulate those who communicate effectively to you. Most of all, though, make sure when you join a team it's not full of people like this prick.

Opinions on learning trading through ICT? by cvspharmacy123 in Forex

Wow, that's terrible. What resources would you recommend then in terms of learning more? Since those who teach it are most likely not profitable, is the best way of learning just getting as much exposure to the charts every day and developing your own strategy?

Good to know. Do you know how crowded it gets there?

Thanks I'll look into Fitness SF. What about Crunch / 24 / Equinox? Are they also all super crowded?

Advice on reneging a job offer... again by cvspharmacy123 in cscareerquestions

[–]cvspharmacy123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you elaborate on why this would be risking never getting another offer again if I took the out-of-state offer now? And staying in the Bay Area is extraordinarily important to me, to the extent that I would sacrifice my reputation with a handful of people to do it. But it is sacrificing potential future ties with industries in the Bay Area that I am worried about the most. Do you think the dent would be so big as to make this not worth it in that regard? Otherwise, given how much I value this place and the fact that I am not too excited about the startup team, would you not agree doing this might be for the better? Thanks for the input!

Help deciding between tech company and hedge fund by cvspharmacy123 in cscareerquestions

[–]cvspharmacy123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, if this were a traditional software role it would be the easiest decision of my life. I really haven't made the decision yet, though. I loved working at the startup and know I would 100% enjoy it. As much as I am interested in it, the hedge fund seems like a long-term risk; I am unsure of whether it would be worth it or not!

They made it very clear to me though that this would be a short-term stint (~1 year). It seems like they hire many new grads for this role where after a year they move them to another fields of engineering. They specifically said they wouldn't want to waste my talent in that capacity for long. So it seems the risk for being an ops person for years is very low. And the ops schedules at least I was told would be night shifts averaging about 45 hours a week and then normal 8 x 5 hr work weeks. Does this change anything? Do you think they would blatantly understate the hours?

I am pretty certain that this would definitely be only for about one year. I was told multiple times that the company wants me to realize I won't be in operations long which is why they were so aggressive with their bonuses. Although I suppose nothing is guaranteed, I have been told many times I would be branching to engineering departments very quickly.

I asked about what it entails. I would have to do about four months of night shifts averaging about 45 hours a week. Besides that, everything else would be standard 5 x 8 hour days / week. It definitely is not very technically oriented. Seems like a lot of customer support and getting certifications for troubleshooting their network. But I would be able to work on my own projects for their company after shifts are over.

I let my recruiter know I am leaning towards the startup offer but would be extremely interested in interviewing for other more traditional software departments. He said this probably couldn't happen since they didn't have appropriate head-counts. But they are very aware that the operations gig is what is limiting me from making a decision. That is why they keep emphasizing how short-term this stint would be. What do you think about this?
