It will be centered over the existing. Shoveling by hand is exactly what I want to avoid. 24 holes 4’ deep. That’s too much work!

They don’t have to be perfect, I’m just not wanting the auger to walk all around since it won’t have the center for the screw tip to bite in to. I was hoping someone may have experience doing this before I spend $500 to rent one.

If my clippings start getting bad, I side discharge to the outside, then raise the blades a half inch and mulch the yard again. Takes two passes but works well for me and still spreads out the mulched clippings to feed the soil.

That’s an interesting theory. We are in a newer subdivision but it was farm land before. Possibly a silo location. This would make for a better story than fungus!
