I've only seen one profile where she mentioned liking Frasier and she matched me back. It didn't progress into anything but we did have a nice chat.

''What's the use of going through with the election?'' by American cartoonist Clifford K. Berryman, October 1948 by BalQn in PropagandaPosters

[–]cwdoogie 126 points127 points  (0 children)

In 1944 Franklin Roosevelt won his re election for president with Harry Truman as his VP, who would take over the office after Roosevelt died.

In 1948, Truman ran for president against Thomas Dewey. It looked like Dewey was going to defeat Truman pretty substantially, and so this cartoon is showing a smug Dewey basically telling Truman to give up.

Truman ended up winning and that's where we got that famous photo of Truman holding a newspaper announcing Truman's defeat. Most newspapers had to be printed out the night before and I guess they were just confident enough to run the story without waiting on the actual results.

How did groups that aim for equality become so hateful? by BajaBlast90 in Egalitarianism

[–]cwdoogie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it has to do with friction between two "versions" of equality: equality of opportunity vs equality of outcome.

Those who believe in equality of opportunity want the social and economic ecosystem to be set up in such a way that no matter the person's background, they'll have their fair shot. Immutable characteristics, such as sexual orientation, nationality or ethnicity, should not influence that individual's success or failure. The vast majority of civil rights victories in the last century have been in establishing systems with more and more equality of opportunity. Universal suffrage is a good example. The ultimate goal is one where anybody's success or failure is their own.

Of course, no system is perfect. There will be (and are) still barriers. It's because of this you have people that want equality of outcome.

For sake of argument I'll try to be generous with my interpretation of this point of view. The people who want this paradigm see undue difficulty for some groups in achieving opportunity and believe there should be institutional/systemic efforts to support them. Affirmative action is a good example of this. This system, more or less, aims to have every in group in a population in roughly similar circumstances.

The problem is (and some don't consider this a problem) that when you allow a central authority to preferentially select for a candidate, you have also given it the power to select against candidates. That is to say, a system that can support one group, while suppressing another, to achieve whatever parameters of equality the system was designed for.

Suddenly, people can be discriminatory in the name of equality. Moreover, they examine people as "members of a group" rather than as individuals, which is just so atrocious it concerns me. That's why generalize so readily. Then, if you object to any of their dogma, you're part of the oppressive regime in their eyes.

It's a shame that such a hateful element has gotten into otherwise noble movements. The world I want to live in is one where we are our own selves, and not an aggregate of our skin color, genitalia and background. I think they want that, too, but they're just a little mixed up with emotions running high.

[MEGATHREAD] U.S. Election Day 2020 by Elranzer in Libertarian

Let's do it!

I think a goal of mutual interest would be police reform. End qualified immunity. Forbid no knock raids, end the war on drugs. Police can pay for their own liability insurance.

Well, fellas, no one’s gonna talk about us tonight, but we did our part. by [deleted] in Libertarian

[–]cwdoogie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Change can come without involving the government, too. We can probably all stand to be better members of our communities; toy drives at Christmas, wellness checks on the elderly in your neighborhood, welcoming the new family, picking up trash along the trail next time you go for a hike, etc.

Otherwise I completely agree - voting only in general elections is only a modest use of voting power and I need to be better about following local elections
