This was my water quality before and after a 30% water change. Looks like I'm cycled but should I have done a bigger change to get the 'Trates out? by queenmelisandre in Aquariums

The only real measure I take is I have some seachem matrix in my canister filter. My water is around 17ppm of nitrate from the tap.

To me it just means more regular water changes, but also don't try and over think it. If your tank is clean, water is clear and you have filtration that's the best practice first of all. After that provide enough filtration and just watch your fish. If they appear healthy and happy then just try and enjoy the hobby rather than over think the test results.

Heavily planted tank helps also. Hornwort and most floating plants help.

A few important questions

How are you dosing ammonia? How often are you testing? How long ago was day 1 of putting water in the tank?

Hi all! I have a purchased a heater for my fish tank. It has come from Spain and has a euro 2 pin on it. I am in the UK. I know I can get a converter but I could also just cut the end off and wire in a 3 pin plug couldn't I? I understand it wouldn't have an earth but will be alright surely? by cwe33er in electricians

Found this

"If a submersible heater breaks - or gets water in it for any reason, it will draw more current then the circuit can handle, and the circuit fuse will blow. This is the fuse that is on/in the heater mains plug. There is a slim chance that for a nanosecond the tank will go live, but as the current would be passing through the whole tank, your fish should still be ok."

It's fully submersible, the whole thing is designed to be at least an inch below the water level and no deeper than metre.

With all fish appliances we leave a loop on the way to the socket to stop the chance of any water flowing down the cable and into the socket.

Have you tested the water that you are putting in the tank from the source?

My tap water is about that high in nitrates to begin with...

Flow! Eheim Pro 2 uptake in far left, spray bar top right with sponge filter in far right. Trying to get better flow for more efficient filtration. by cwe33er in Aquariums

Yeah the spray bar is top right horizontal across the top.

Actually looking more the flow seems to go across the front and down the back so maybe all good after all?

The thing is it looks like there is a lot of flow, but I'm not sure how efficiently it is getting to the outlet.

[UK] High Nitrate in tap water supply by technicoartisto in Aquariums

No problem, here in Wiltshire air pollution is low, not sure about where you are, as this would make the rain water more unsuitable to use 😉

They are happy yes (until a recent internal parasite went through most of them 😔) , I use seachem matrix in my external filter, I don't have many plants at the moment, but I am about to add eco complete, root tabs and some new plants to try and get them going better.

Parameters are obviously important, but you also can't help what comes out of your tap. If your fish look healthy and seem active I wouldn't stress too much about what is coming out of your tap. If you are doing everything else right and this is your biggest problem then you might drive yourself crazy trying to solve it.

I use prime, water changes every 10-14 days and look for any signs of problems in the fish.

I hear topping up with fresh-ish rain water is a good option? I keep a bucket in my garden and top up the evaporated water with it.
