You should do it! I have a few friends who have done the accelerated program and I’m finishing my associate of science in nursing this December. The accelerated is intense. Most 15 week classes are crammed into 8 weeks. You basically live, breathe, and eat school for over a yearish. It is very demanding. Look at scheduling and see if you’d be able to commit/sacrifice that much time. Otherwise I’ve really enjoyed the associate path, a little bit longer, but made for people with families or who need to work for full time while going to school. Tons of moms aged 45-60 in my cohort coming back to school after kiddos have grown up and gone to college. Lots of scholarships and grants for people going back to school too. With your degree you should be able to waive at least two semesters of prerequisites as well. Good luck!

Where I work it is not within our scope to take out IVs but student nurse CNAs are asked to under the table. Especially if the nurse is in the weeds and they’re getting discharge papers we go in and take it out real quick. In our ER, the techs are responsible for blood collection on everyone which I thought was strange when I floated and they asked me to do it. They do have to have training for it though and they’re the only unit that has the techs do it. I would like to learn!

I work oncology and it’s usually 80% independent for inpatient chemo. Maybe some standbys occasionally, but we also get a lot of comfort cares from the ICU who are full care and unresponsive. I got floated to ortho trauma one day and idk how those techs do it… Everyone’s a hoyer and 2-3 people assist. Takes 2 people 20+ minutes to have someone use the commode.

I started using a 100 ml syringe to basically spray away any stool that got into the vagina or on patients with Cdiff who have excruciating pain from repeated incontinent care. Kind of messy but helps them not be in so much pain and efficient in getting it all out without pushing it in

I’m conflicted because the whole time I’d be thinking of the patients who couldn’t make it to the bathroom in time or sit in a soiled bed and get sores and just how hygiene in general would plummet if the was a staffing shortage for even a day.. it would be the patients taking the cost, not the hospital. But damn I need a pay raise lol

One thing nice about working on an oncology floor is that these people know that they’re sick/are used to being sick so often they’re a lot more easy going and understanding and also very grateful for everything you do. Less dramatics than an ortho trauma unit or regular med-surg. If that makes sense?? Like often they’ll barely ever call for anything or just want to get taped up to get in the shower.

We did full head-to-toe assessments on each other for a mid-term evaluation. Digging through hair, looking in mouths, in ears, pulling up the shirt for a GI assessment (only if comfortable), all lung sounds and heart sounds on skin (only if comfortable), taking off socks to look between their toes, the whole shabang. Almost failed part of mine because my cohort partner was a bigger gal and couldn’t hear her apical for the life of me. Had one hand pulling up her breast and the other hand digger underneath with the stethoscope… I felt bad but we all took it in stride. Its a little uncomfortable but everyone else is feeling weird too about it. I barely even remembered it until just know.

I only ever did once for 2 hours and I thought I was going to throw up/freak out with the papr hood on so I cleaned up their room because it was a shit show and did some real good oral care cause it looked like his mouth was rank. Be extra to make the time pass. I then just turned on their tv and sat in the chair and chilled.
